Bill’s BS by Bill Stewart 05/028/13 Somebody up there likes us, and his name is Gary. Our Gary Neckers Memorial Solo was a tremendous success. Unbelievable weather, at least until the end, and 71 entries. We expect that we will be able to donate about $2,000 to a scholarship fund in Gary’s honor. Major Thanks to everyone!

I started out with a BMW Drivers Education event at Mid-Ohio. Good weather, good students, poor turnout. I don’t think that anyone expected decent weather. The next Saturday was the annual Nelson Safety Day with fires and the flipper. Great simulations out at the turns.

I went to Neohio’s Solo planning meeting. They have a new group that is very eager to have 4 Solos at Lakeland Community College at the Mentor exit on I-90. Their first event is June 9th. Put it on your calendar.

Steel Cities, Charlie Campbell, Dave Hammer, Mark Swick, and I had a busy, but very cold weekend at Pitt Race. Charlie raced in the regional races, help instruct in the drivers school, and was an SIT(Steward in Training). Dave worked with me in pit lane while Mark froze out on the corners. The wind with occasional snow was downright painful. The new owners are making lots of improvements. A new garage was going up while we were there and they have cleared the trees for the South extension. Very encouraging.

I can’t say or write enough about our Gary Neckers Memorial Solo. Good weather for April, lots of fun at the Saturday test & tune. A few minor first event glitches. We wish more folks would have pre-registered online at motorsportreg.com. PLEASE PRE-REGISTER ! It makes it so much faster and easier. Seventy One entries !!! A huge thank you to all the Weastern New York folks ! 13 Novices ! Kathryn Bell was having a blast as she learned her way in her Hyundai Genesis Coupe. Nick Simon and Dale Kunze were as impressive as ever. I don’t know his name, but there was one young man who I think wore out his sneakers chasing cones. Unfortunately, the rain slowly came in and dampened the awards ceremony. I was so glad that Gary’s wife Sandy, his mother, and his daughter could make it. A group from the Chautauqua Corvette Club stopped in before lunch. They are planning on doing a road rally with us in Gary’s memory to earn money for the scholarship. Just a great event. Thanks again!

Dave Hammer gives Charlie Campbell his first flag of the year

at Pitt RaceThe NEDIV Majors weekends started off at Summit Point with a 28% increase in entries. Nelson regulars Amy Ruman, Scott Rettich, Jacek Mucha, and Sedat Yelkin won their races. There was a fantastic Misery Bay turnout for Mahoning Valley’s John McGill Memorial Regionals, PDX, and Club Trials. Full report next month. MVR had to cancel their Street Survival at the last minute when the site’s management company overruled the owner. We are looking for a new site.

I have done 3 DEs(Driver Education) weekends now at Mid-Ohio with the Porsche and BMW clubs. They are like our PDX, more expensive, but with more track time. All cars are welcome. May ends with a Majors weekend at Michigan International Speedway, the first use of the road course in years.

June starts with me off to New Jersey Motorsports Park and their SCCA Majors weekend. And, there is another Majors at Mid-Ohio. I will miss our second Solo at LES. It sucks, just not enough weekends! I know many of you are busy with graduations and weddings, but try to come out. We need your help and support if just in set-up and registration. We have a nice group of novices and they deserve our attention. The forecast is sunny and 71. Be there !

Trans-Am returns to Watkins Glen, running at the SVRA weekend. You could join me at Nelson June 14-16 for the Porsche Club 944 Fest and DE, or you might venture to Mid-Ohio for the Grand-Am Rolex, Continental, Playboy MX-5 Cup, Lamborghini Trofeo, and SCCA IT/Miata Shootout weekend. continued on p.5

Bill’s BS continued Finger Lakes Region will put on their Westward Ho! Regionals June 22 & 23 at Nelson. The big Grand Am Sahlens 6 Hour ends June up at the Glen. Detroit’s Belle Isle will see the Indy Cars and Grand-Am July 4th weekend. Cadilllac is sponsoring the SCCA World Challenge race! The same weekend has the SCCA Majors at Watkins Glen and Neohio’s National and Regional races at Nelson. Too busy. While Misery Bay will have our first Out of Region Solo when we visit WNY and Ralph Wilson Stadium, the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix extravaganza starts at Pitt Race and ends the next weekend at beautiful Schenley Park. While we have our Solo #5 at LES on the 21st. Too busy again. July ends with our big chance to do the SCCA Pro Solo at Toledo. Logan and Nick Kelly say it is GREAT !

August is a big month at Mid-Ohio with the IRL and SCCA World Challenge the first weekend and the NASCAR Nationwide series visiting Aug 16 &17 with SCCA’s Trans-AM. Should be REAL interesting! Steel Cities has their Bonus Nationals that first weekend and then Pocono hosts theirs the next. The same weekend Mid-Ohio has SCCA Regionals with a PDX on Friday.

We hope to end August with a Solo at the Tom Ridge Field Erie International Airport. A promoter is trying to put together a car show featuring our Solo on August 25th. We did one there several years ago and it was a big success for us, not so much for the promoter. So keep your fingers crossed. It could make our season! There is also a good chance that we can join Neohio for a Out of Region Solo at Lakeland Community College on Labor Day weekend. Watch this space, and our web page for the latest.

Every month, I mail out, you know at the good old Post Office, 50 Pits Signals to our Misery Bay members and another 75 to 100 to non-members who have participated in the last year. We would REALLY appreciate it we could save some money and e-mail the Pit Signal to you. It usually is about 3 Mb with the pictures, so not everyone can handle it, but if you can, please send me your e-mail address. Also, if you have any questions, or just want to talk, you can call me, toll free at (888)927-9806.

See You Out There! Bill
