EURORADIO is the label for the very prestigious concerts exchanged among the Radio Members of the European Broadcasting Union. Founded in 1950, the EBU is the world’s largest professional association of national and public broadcasters.

The EURORADIO satellite network covers the entire European broadcasting area, and spans from Reykjavik to Istanbul, and from Madeira to Moscow. The network is extended to EBU Associate Members in North America and the Asia-Pacific area via a fibre optic network. Thanks to these networks, European public radio broadcasters have access every year to over 4’000 concerts in any musical field (pop/rock, folk and world music), without

forgetting, of course, the entire range of Classical music and more than  450 Jazz concerts. Each concert is regularly taken by more than 10 organizations, meaning that a EURORADIO concert has an average audience of some 1.7 million listeners! We’re thus talking about the world’s largest virtual concert hall, and at the same time of some outstanding means of cultural promotion.

And for over 20 years, the EBU Members have chosen to send their best young Jazz musicians to form the European Jazz Orchestra, an annually ephemeral big band, which will be brought up in Switzerland in 2015 for a very promising week!

Les producteurs de Jazz européens se battent bec et

ongles pour continuer à faire exister un message musical qu’il semble primordial de diffuser aussi largement que possible. A cette enseigne, un projet comme celui du European Jazz Orchestra semble d’une grande pertinence, de par son côté rassembleur et quasi-utopique: réunir des musiciens qui ne se connaissaient pas quelques jours auparavant pour donner une série de concerts qui sont régulièrement, année après année, de haut vol. La gageure est pour le moins digne d’éloges!

Merci à l’organe culturel faîtier de la SSR d’avoir bien voulu, pour cette édition 2015, croire encore en un projet aussi porteur et galvanisant que celui du European Jazz Orchestra

Seit den sechziger Jahren veranstaltet die EBU alljährlich ein Big Band-Event mit Musikerinnen und Musikern aus den Ländern der angeschlossenen Rundfunkanstalten. Die Formel hat sich über die Jahre immer wieder etwas geändert. Was geblieben ist, ist dass das Land, in dem das Event stattfindet, einen oder mehrere Komponisten sucht, die dann ein neues Repertoire kreieren. Und seit die EU das Projekt unterstützt, müssen die Musikerinnen und Musiker des Orchesters unter dreissig Jahre alt sein.Nach 2004 findet dieser Anlass heuer nun wieder einmal in der Schweiz statt – diesmal in der Romandie. Und der Master Mind hinter der Musik ist einer, der schon 2004 mit einer Partitur mit von der Partie war: der mittlerweile in Brooklyn lebende, in der Genfer Jazzszene gross gewordene Saxophonist und Komponist Ohad Talmor. Für die beteiligten Musikerinnen und Musiker wie auch für das Publikum ist das eine grossartige Chance, einen aussergewöhnlichen musikalischen Kosmos eines Weitgereisten kennenzulernen. Viel Vergnügen dabei!

Come produttore delegato della SRG SSR ho seguito numerose edizioni dell’Euroradio Jazz Orchestra sin dalla metà degli anni ’90, da quella che si svolse in Slovenia nel 1997 fino a quella di Helsinki del 2011. Nel corso di tutti questi anni ho visto e ascoltato molti musicisti confrontati a musiche le più diverse; ho apprezzato l’approccio personale dei vari compositori e direttori chiamati a gestire un’orchestra che si rinnova di anno in anno, con personalità che si incontrano per la prima volta; ho fatto la conoscenza di molte sale da concerto, di pubblici sempre nuovi davanti ai quali l’orchestra è stata tenuta ad esibirsi. Ma un tratto comune in tutto questo c’è: è l’entusiasmo, la voglia di creare qualcosa insieme, la consapevolezza che quest’iniziativa, promossa dell’UER in collaborazione con le Radio nazionali ad essa affiliate, rappresenti per tutti i giovani musicisti coinvolti un’occasione straordinaria d’incontro e di crescita, personale e comune. Non di rado coloro che vi hanno partecipato hanno prolungato le belle complicità nate durante tale esperienza e, a volte,  si sono affermati nella non facile scena musicale internazionale.

A l’heure où la question d’un flux migratoire dramatique met bon nombre de frontières européennes dans une situation difficile, il est pertinent et heureux de jouer la carte de la réunion des nationalités via un projet musical ambitieux. Seize musiciens venus des quatre coins de l’Europe et qui ne se connaissaient pas avant la mise sur pied de ce projet vont pouvoir se réunir autour d’un projet musical galvanisant, lui-même concocté par un compositeur-arrangeur-chef d’orchestre-saxophoniste né à Lyon, Genevois d’adoption, Israëlien d’origine et basé à Brooklyn depuis quinze ans, Ohad Talmor.Il n’y a pas d’édition annuelle du European Jazz Orchestra qui n’ait débouché sur de prolifiques amitiés musicales et rencontres a posteriori, augmentées de tournées et de productions discographiques inattendues, entre des musiciennes et des musiciens qui ne se seraient jamais rencontrés sans le soutien organisationnel des Radios européennes et de son organe «capital», l’UER (Union Européenne de Radiodiffusion).Bons concerts à vous tous, auditeurs et musiciens confondus!
