National Technology Platforms (NTPs)European Aims of the NTPs

• To collaborate with the ECTP in developing a European Vision 2030, a Strategic Research Agenda and Roadmap for research and innovation in the construction sector by contributing national viewpoints.

• To establish a network for NTPs to collaborate at a European level, creating an opportunity for a wide range of national stakeholders (including industry, national organisations, SMEs and clients) to learn from each other in areas of best practice, research agendas and national goals.

• To map national regulations and policies relating to construction and identify barriers to innovation in the sector that can be addressed at a European level.

• To disseminate knowledge on innovation processes by exchanging national experiences of best practice.

• To establish communication links between other trans-national research activities (such as ERABUILD and other possible collaborative programmes) and the ECTP.

• To develop a framework for future networking of construction research infrastructure across the EU member states.

• Contributions from ERABUILD will be considered as very important input regarding previous items.

• A working group (WG), reporting to the Support Group, has been established with contact persons from the various NTPs.

• The European countries listed below are known to have now established National Technology Platforms addressing the future needs of the built environment, and particularly the challenge of innovation and industry transformation in the construction sector.– Belgium– Denmark (Dansk teknologiplatform for byggeriet)– Germany– Greece (Hellenic Construction Technology Platform)– Norway (Norsk teknologiplattform)– Poland (

PCTP - Polish Construction Technology Platform)– Slovenia (SGTP - Slovenska gradbena tehnoloska

platforma)– Spain (PTEC)– United Kingdom

Research priorities - Networks• New methods/tools for the comprehensive management of transport and utilities infrastructure

in urban and extraurban context to reduce impact on service (timing: E, 20M€)• Standards, models and databases to assess, follow and predict the long-term performance of

structures and components subject to ageing and deterioration (timing: B, 15 M€)• New concepts to extend the life time of structures or increase their capacity, with no reduction

in safety and with positive impact on maintenance (timing: M, 20M€)• New testing methods for early detection of damages for structures and infrastructures, even

buried, with minimal impact on traffic and supply (timing: M, 20M€)• Develop, design, build and operate, with new or non-conventional multifunctional materials or

with traditional materials of enhanced performances, with low environmental impact, high durability, reduced maintenance and operation costs, and increased comfort for users and citizens (timing: M, 20M€)

• Integrated life-cycle assessment systems combining cost-efficient and easy-to-maintain sensors, monitoring and performance prediction systems, and covering all stages of construction control, asset management, and optimisation of maintenance (timing: B).

• ICT and ITS systems to optimise traffic, serviceability and security of networks integrating traffic and transport monitoring and management, information to users, tolling, incident and crisis management (timing :M. Priority to be considered in conjunction with DGTREN and DG ISM).

(NOTE – Timing abbreviations: “B” = beginning, “M” = middle, “E” = end, in terms of life of FP7)

Advisory Group of Users and Clients – Recommendations to SG• General

– User and client perspectives should be incorporated in the formulation and assessment of research proposals

– Research should have the active participation of users and/or client interests in both execution and the dissemination and application of research outputs

– Research should address topics and issues of particular relevance to clients and users

• Proposals should– Be formulated with clear user/client involvement– Be interdisciplinary, in that social scientists should be working alongside physical

scientists on issues of management, organisation and implementation– Be assessed by experts who can bring client perspectives to the evaluation– Be steered by groupings that include representatives of client and user interests– Have dissemination and implementation strategies that clearly involve client and

user interests

Seems to be similar to the way Sustainable Bridges is organised!

Conclusions• If you haven’t done so already, register with the

ECTP– It will give you access to the private areas of the web

site• Consider attending the plenary assembly in

Versailles– Registration form is on the ECTP web site

• It is likely that most FP7 construction calls will be based on the ECTP priority areas

• Look at the SRAs and start thinking about possible consortia for new projects
