• Wear a face covering • Maintain 2m distance • Hand sanitise regularly • Use phones for liturgy and giving • Sing only in our hearts

For full details, please see the separate document Congregation Safety over Covid 19.

The Gathering Introit Morning glory, starlit sky Geoff Weaver Sung by the Choir of St Martin-in-the-Fields.

Morning glory, starlit sky, soaring music, scholar's truth, flight of swallows, autumn leaves, memory's treasure, grace of youth; Open are the gifts of God, gifts of love to mind and sense; hidden is love's agony, love's endeavour, love's expense.

Love that gives, gives evermore, gives with zeal, with eager hands, spares not, keeps not, all outpours, ventures all, is all expends.

Drained is love in making full; bound in setting others free; poor in making many rich; weak in giving power to be.

Therefore he who shows us God hangs upon the tree; and the nails and crown of thorns tells of what God’s love must be.

Here is God, no monarch he, throned in easy state to reign; here is God, whose arms of love aching, spent, the world sustain.

William Hubert Vanstone (1923-1999)

God of time and eternity your Spirit brooded over the waters and your Son calmed the sea. Look with mercy on all the countries of the Pacific. Bless the people of Japan as they live with the horror of what was done by their people in their name during the Second World War. Strengthen and heal wounds that still remain amongst nations that lived under occupation and underwent atrocities. Redeem memories of all who lost loved ones in combat or who lived to tell the tale of imprisonment, slave labour, sickness or injury. Lead your children in the paths of understanding, trade, shared vision and reconciliation, that in you our future may be greater than our past, and that we live lives of dignity and courage, worthy of the sacrifice of those who died that we might be free; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

The Greeting The Lord be with you. All And also with you

Opening Hymn Sung by St Martin’s Voices, recorded in church this week.

1 Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord! Unnumbered blessings, give my spirit voice; tender to me the promise of his word; in God my Saviour shall my heart rejoice.

2 Tell out, my soul, the greatness of his Name! Make known his might, the deeds his arm has done; his mercy sure, from age to age the same; his holy Name, the Lord, the Mighty One.

3 Tell out, my soul, the greatness of his might! Powers and dominions lay their glory by. Proud hearts and stubborn wills are put to flight, the hungry fed, the humble lifted high.

2

Page 5: The Eucharist - Amazon S3

4 Tell out, my soul, the glories of his word! Firm is his promise, and his mercy sure. Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord to children's children and for evermore! Timothy Dudley-Smith (born 1926) from Luke 1 vs46-55

Please sit or kneel.

Confession

Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith to the one who longs to embrace and restore us.

All Most merciful God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, we confess that we have sinned in thought, word and deed. We have not loved you with our whole heart. We have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. In your mercy forgive what we have been, help us to amend what we are, and direct what we shall be; that we may do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with you, our God. Amen.

Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in life eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

All Amen

Please stand.

The Liturgy of the Word First Reading Genesis 45: 1-15 read by Valentina Chan

Then Joseph could no longer control himself before all those who stood by him, and he cried out, ‘Send everyone away from me.’ So no one stayed with him when Joseph made himself known to his brothers. And he wept so loudly that the Egyptians heard it, and the household of Pharaoh heard it. Joseph said to his brothers, ‘I am Joseph. Is my father still alive?’ But his brothers could not answer him, so dismayed were they at his presence.

Then Joseph said to his brothers, ‘Come closer to me.’ And they came closer. He said, ‘I am your brother Joseph, whom you sold into Egypt. And now do not be distressed, or angry with yourselves, because you sold me here; for God sent me before you to preserve life. For the famine has been in the land these two years; and there are five more years in which there will be neither ploughing nor harvest. God sent me before you to preserve for you a remnant on earth, and to keep alive for you many survivors. So it was not you who sent me here, but God; he has made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house and ruler over all the land of Egypt. Hurry and go up to my father and say to him, “Thus says your son Joseph, God has made me lord of all Egypt; come down to me, do not delay. You shall settle in the land of Goshen, and you shall be near me, you and your children and your children’s children, as well as your flocks, your herds, and all that you have. I will provide for you there—since there are five more years of famine to come—so that you and your household, and all that you have, will not come to poverty.” And now your eyes and the eyes of my brother Benjamin see that it is my own mouth that speaks to you. You must tell my father how greatly I am

5

honoured in Egypt, and all that you have seen. Hurry and bring my father down here.’ Then he fell upon his brother Benjamin’s neck and wept, while Benjamin wept upon his neck. And he kissed all his brothers and wept upon them; and after that his brothers talked with him.

Hear the word of the Lord. All Thanks be to God.

Second Reading Romans 11: 1-2a, 29-32 read by Lavinia AnsonI ask, then, has God rejected his people? By no means! I myself am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, a member of the tribe of Benjamin. God has not rejected his people whom he foreknew. Do you not know what the scripture says of Elijah, how he pleads with God against Israel? for the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable. Just as you were once disobedient to God but have now received mercy because of their disobedience, so they have now been disobedient in order that, by the mercy shown to you, they too may now receive mercy. For God has imprisoned all in disobedience so that he may be merciful to all.

Hear the word of the Lord. All Thanks be to God.

Please stand.

Gospel Hymn Sung by the Choral Scholars.

1 The kingdom of God is justice and joy, for Jesus restores what sin would destroy; God's power and glory in Jesus we know, and here and hereafter the kingdom shall grow.

2 The kingdom of God is mercy and grace, the captives are freed, the sinners find place, the outcast are welcomed God's banquet to share, and hope is awakened instead of despair.

3 The kingdom of God is challenge and choice, believe the good news, repent and rejoice! His love for us sinners brought Christ to his cross, our crisis of judgement for gain or for loss.

4 God's kingdom is come, the gift and the goal, in Jesus begun, in heaven made whole; the heirs of the kingdom shall answer his call, and all things cry glory to God all in all. Bryn Rees (1911-1983)

Gospel Reading Matthew 15: 10-28 Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. All Glory to you, O Lord.

Then he called the crowd to him and said to them, ‘Listen and understand: it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but it is what comes out of the mouth that defiles.’ Then the disciples approached and said to him, ‘Do you know that the Pharisees took offence when they heard what you said?’ He answered, ‘Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be uprooted. Let them alone; they are blind guides of the blind. And if one blind person guides another, both will fall into a pit.’ But Peter said to him, ‘Explain this parable to us.’ Then he said, ‘Are you also still without understanding? Do you not see that whatever goes into the mouth enters the stomach, and goes out into the sewer? But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this is what defiles. For out of the heart come evil intentions, murder, adultery, fornication, theft, false witness, slander. These are what defile a person, but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile.’

This is the Gospel of the Lord. All Praise to you, O Christ.

Please sit.

Sermon Revd Dr Sam Wells

Anthem Blessed are the pure in heart Walford Davies Sung by St Martin's Voices.

Blest are the pure in heart, for they shall see our God. The secret of the Lord is theirs, their soul is Christ's abode. Still to the searching soul great peace will God impart, and for this heav'nly dwelling, will seek the pure in heart.

Nicene Creed

All We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Please sit or kneel.

Offertory Hymn Sung by St Martin’s Voices, recorded in church this week.

1 There's a wideness in God's mercy like the wideness of the sea, there's a kindness in his justice which is more than liberty. There is no place where earth's sorrows are more felt than up in heav'n; there is no place where earth's failings have such kindly judgement given.

2 For the love of God is broader than the scope of human mind; and the heart of the Eternal is most wonderfully kind. But we make his love too narrow by false limits of our own, and we magnify his strictness with a zeal he will not own.

3 There is plentiful redemption in the blood that has been shed: there is joy for all the members in the sorrows of the head. There is grace enough for thousands of new worlds as great as this: there is room for fresh creations in that upper home of bliss.

Second half of tune4 If our love were but more simple we should take him at his word; and our lives would be all gladness in the joy of Christ our Lord. Frederick Faber (1814–1863)

The Preparation of the Table The Taking of the Bread and Wine

Yours, Lord, is the greatness, the power, the glory, the splendour, and the majesty; for everything in heaven and on earth is yours.

All All things come from you, and of your own do we give you. Amen.

The Eucharistic Prayer The Lord be with youAll and also with you.

Lift up your hearts. All We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.All It is right to give thanks and praise.

Thanks and praise be to you, Lord God of mercy and grace, for you entered into covenant trust with your chosen people, and bestowed on them boundless gifts and an irrevocable calling. In Jesus you take your children’s food and give it to all creation, even we who lurk in the shadows, hoping for the crumbs of your eternal glory. You have lifted us from the floor to your table, and from a place beyond redemption to the joy of your heart. And so we gladly thank you, with angels and archangels and all the company of heaven, singing the hymn of your unending praise.

Page 14: The Eucharist - Amazon S3

Cleansing God, in Christ you come among us in infectious purity, and heal us from the inside out. You give us eternal food that in you, we may never be hungry again. Send your Holy Spirit upon us now, that we may become people who take in the holiness of your mercy, and give out the abundance of your grace. Sanctify this bread and this wine, that they may become for us the body and blood of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Who, at supper with his disciples, took bread, gave you thanks, broke the bread, and gave it to them, saying, ‘Take, eat: this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me.’ After supper he took the cup. Again he gave you thanks, and gave it to his disciples, saying, ‘Drink this, all of you: this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.’

Great is the mystery of faith. All Christ has died: Christ is risen: Christ will come again.

Forgiving God, you sent Joseph to Egypt, through the conspiracy of his brothers, to redeem your people from the curse of famine. You sent your Son Jesus to the cross, through the corruption of our human will, to liberate us from sin and death. Raise up among us children of hope, of courage, of truth, and of vision, who embody your will to turn our evil into your good. Transform the lives of all who live under famine today; visit any who are excluded by envy or prejudice or fear; and lift the hearts who those who are weighed down under burdens too great to bear. Gather at your resurrection banquet your whole church, living and departed, that all creation may feast with eyes and ears and touch and tongue on the effervescence of your glory, ever one God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, forever.

All Amen.

Please sit or kneel.

Come, almighty to deliver, Let us all thy grace receive; Suddenly return, and never, Never more thy temples leave. Thee we would be always blessing, Serve thee as thy hosts above, Pray, and praise thee, without ceasing, Glory in thy perfect love.

Finish then thy new creation, Pure and spotless let us be; Let us see thy great salvation, Perfectly restored in thee: Changed from glory into glory, Till in heaven we take our place, Till we cast our crowns before thee, Lost in wonder, love, and praise! Charles Wesley (1707-1788)

Thanksgiving Hymn Sung by the Choral Scholars.

1 Thy hand, O God, has guided thy flock, from age to age; their wondrous tale is written, full clear, on every page; our fathers owned thy goodness, and we their deeds record; and both of this bear witness; one Church, one faith, one Lord.

2 Thy heralds brought glad tidings to greatest as to least; they bade men rise, and hasten to share the great King's feast; and this was all their teaching, in every deed and word, to all alike proclaiming one Church, one faith, one Lord.

Page 18: The Eucharist - Amazon S3

3 Through many a day of darkness, through many a scene of strife, the faithful few fought bravely, to guard the nation's life. Their Gospel of redemption, sin pardoned, man restored, was all in this enfolded: one Church, one faith, one Lord..

4 Thy mercy will not fail us, nor leave thy work undone; with thy right hand to help us, thy victory shall be won; and then, by men and angels, thy name shall be adored, and this shall be their anthem: one Church, one faith, one Lord. Edward Hayes Plumptre (1821-1891)
