WHO’S WHO IN THE CHURCH
Dear Friends, On Washington, DC Metro Station on a cold January morning a man with a violin plays six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time approximately 2 thousand people passed through the station, most of them on their way to work. It took 3 minutes for anyone to notice him at all- a middle-aged man slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds and then hurried to meet his schedule. 4 minutes later the violinist received his first dollar: a woman threw the money in the hat and, without stopping, continued to walk. After 10 minutes, a 3-year old boy stopped but his mother tugged him along hurriedly. The child stopped to look at the violinist again, but the mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk, turning his head all the time. This action was repeated by several other children. Every parent, without exception, forced their children to move on quickly. Over the entire 45 minutes, only 6 people stopped and listened for a short while. About 20 gave money but continued to walk at their normal pace. He finished playing and silence took over. No one noticed and no one applauded. The violinist was a certain Joshua Bell, a very well known violinist. He was playing with a violin valued at $3.5 million dollars. Two days before, Joshua Bell sold out a theatre in Boston where the price of seats averaged $100. Joshua Bell playing incognito in the metro station was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment about perception, taste and people's priorities. The questions raised: in a commonplace environment at an inappropriate hour, do we perceive beauty? Do we stop to ap-preciate it? Do we recognize talent in an unexpected context? And, of course, it raises the question: if we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world, playing some of the finest music ever written, with one of the most beautiful instruments ever made... what else are we missing?

National Trust news
Following on from our update in June, Claife viewing station and courtyard are now up and running and we've
had lots of interest so far from people passing by. Inevitably it is a bit weather dependent – we’ve had some
really busy days, and some days where there have been virtually no visitors at all.
We’ve got the courtyard area open all the time and, every day when staff are there, we’ve got one of the
buildings open with information, displays, some small retail and the surveys we’re asking to be com-
pleted. Visitors can do as much or as little as they wish; we’ve had quite a few forms filled in so far and they
are generally fairly consistent in thoughts and ideas.
We’re going to offer all residents within the parishes the chance to come down and have a look at the site in
more detail with our staff. We’re going to run two sessions, the first on Saturday 9th July at 10am; the second
on Thursday 14th July at 19.30. You can of course come down at any time when the site is open and chat to
our staff.
On both dates, we’ll meet at the main gate into the courtyard (nearest parking at Ash Landing car park). We’ll
have a look at all the buildings at the sites, there will be the chance to ask any questions you might have, and
we’ll then ask everyone to fill in on of the survey forms.
If you’d like to come along, please do let us know so we can plan for the numbers. Phone 015394 41456 or
email [email protected]

Satterthwaite and Rusland C of E Religious Education Fund
When Satterthwaite School closed the site was sold to Mitre Housing for affordable dwellings. The
construction of these dwellings will soon be completed. Part of the proceeds of the sale of the site
was used to set up a registered charity; the trustees are the vicar and churchwardens of Satterthwaite
and Rusland Churches.
The charity is able to make modest grants to young people aged 19 years or under for purposes con-
nected to Church of England religious education. Applicants (or organisations who work with this
age group) should be based in Rusland, Satterthwaite, Hawkshead or Sawrey. The trustees can in ap-
propriate cases consider organisations based in the Windermere Deanery.
The trustees take a wide view as to that which constitutes religious education and in particular en-
courage applications from those involved in church orientated activities such as church music, bell
ringing and pupil’s projects about churches and/or church activities.

Party in the Park
On behalf of the Hawkshead Recreation Ground Trustees, I would like to thank all those
who supported the day, which again turned out to be a great success. Particular thanks to
Ed Johnson, Kings Arms, for securing some excellent sponsorship from Carlsberg, H.B.
Clark and Hawkshead Brewery, and providing the bar, also, to the ‘Vaughan Clan’ and
Adam McClelland for giving up their time to run the bar and sell ALL the beer.
Also, thanks to Gilbert Brown & Sons for the sponsorship of ‘Jesters’ and Lynn and Paul
Larkin for providing the much requested/needed tea, coffee and light refreshment tent.
Finally thanks to; Emma Moulton & Rickie Wadsworth for car parking; Andrew Wilson for the
PA; Richard Rose Electrical for the provision of power sources; Alistair Irvine for the loan of
temporary fencing, and to all the ‘bucket shakers’ at the entrances, who collected nearly
£600.00
In total just over £2,000 was raised for the Recreation Ground, which again has been set
aside to try and build up a reserve fund to cover the lack of damage insurance and for any
future repairs/maintenance of the new courts and children’s play equipment.

School News
Forest School have been creating a quiz about wildlife and habitats. The gardening work
has paid off as we observe the growth in the vegetable plot.
Key Stage 1 continue with their Island project and have a fantastic pirate display in their
classroom. They have also been orienteering which progressed to a school walk at Lough-
rigg. The children all completed routes which had been set and pre-walked by Key Stage 2
the previous week.
Years 3 & 4 have been learning about King Henry VIII and have produced project work
about the life cycle of a butterfly.
Year 5 & 6 pupils embarked on a trip to London to experience a guided tour of The Houses
of Parliament, followed by a workshop, after which Tim Farron saw them briefly. A snack
stop at Jubilee Gardens was followed by a Duck Tour around London and up the Thames
(the vehicle was amphibious) before catching the train home.
The school held an amazing International Olympic Day.

Thank you
The Exhibition of Paintings by Brenda Hilton, supported by Vintage and Collectables by Gill
Waldau and hand-made jewellery by Hilary Anderson held on the 3 June in the Lower Market
Hall was a great success.
Thanks are extended to all the bakers who made cup cakes and biscuits for the refreshments.
Particular thanks are given to Vera Wood who gave up her day to work in the kitchen and make
teas and coffees. Special thanks must be given to two young people who gave so much; firstly to
Hannah Monkman who waited on tables all day as well as doing a multitude of other tasks to
keep the event running smoothly. Also, Hannah sold many of her own books, making over £50
which she willingly gave to the final donation. Secondly to Alan Hilton who did whatever task
was asked of him, particularly washing and drying all the cups and saucers. Special thanks also
to Ann Thackeray.
The total contribution we were able to make to Cancer Research UK., both from the refresh-
ments and from donations amounted to £300. Thanks are extended to everyone who supported
the event and made it a very pleasant day.
NEWS FROM THE ARMITT
The renewed permanent exhibition plus the ‘Bohemians In Exile’ have, as hoped, signifi-
cantly increased the number of visitors to the Armitt. Discussions are underway with the Royal
College of Art for the ‘Bohemians’ to transfer to London when it finishes in October. Our thanks
are extended to those individuals, businesses and the Beatrix Potter Society who have funded
specific elements in the new displays.
But we need to keep ahead of the game. Already under development is the winter exhibition
based around the Armitt sisters, particularly Sophia. For the centenary exhibition starting in
spring 2012, invitations have gone out to a range of artists using several different media and
proposals are awaited with baited breath.
Reproductions of watercolours of eight Lake District scenes by J.B.Pyne (1800 – 1870) from the
library collection are about to be marketed from the museum and via the website. It is planned
to follow these with some early photographs from the collection and Beatrix Potter’s fungi water-
colours. Coincidentally a donation of letters and other documents from BP has just been re-
ceived from a couple from Maryport.
