Founder’s messageThe year 2012 has already ushered in monumental advances for Young Living. New changes currently underway have brought new life, optimism, and excitement throughout the company and will continue as this growing energy will soon propel Young Living to unmatched heights. There has never been a better time than now to build your success with a company dedicated to transforming lives through wellness, purpose, and abundance.

Transformation, or becoming transformed, is exactly what I would like every person associated with Young Living to focus on this year and in years to come. Its very definition gives a sense of progression, forward movement, and accomplishment – all worthy characteristics of individuals who actually seek to live the Young Living lifestyle.

During January I spent most of my time with great people who embody such characteristics, working alongside them at the Winter Harvest. I admire them for their dedication to not only Young Living but also to the human race. I watched people who were not content with the status quo. They wanted to make a difference and were focused on working hard, learning, and growing. It was a wonderful experience. Even though the temperatures were cold and harsh and blowing winds penetrated to the bones, there came soothing warmth stemming from companionship and unity as we worked together, laughed together, and lived together.

In the coming months there will be many trainings, harvests, and events that will give you the opportunity to become more involved with Young Living. I welcome all of you who choose to join us and experience a new adventure in your lives. Some say the work is hard and the weather sometimes unfriendly, but the environment is spectacular and invigorating. You will be greatly rewarded as you enjoy the association of old and new friendships, realise new accomplishments, and feel inspired through powerful and amazing transformations.

Young Living harvests give distributors the opportunity to use their talents and time to accomplish great things. Here, distributors take a break from distilling at St. maries farm to prepare breakfasts. Distributors are excited and appreciative of the new full kitchens and dining rooms at St. maries and Highland Flats farms.

Young Living’s 2012 Winter Harvest, held at the Highland Flats and St. Maries farms in Idaho during January and continuing into February, kick-started a year Gary Young has deemed transformational.

More than 100 distributors from around the world teamed together in the cold winter weather to cut, chip, and distil balsam fir, red cedar, and pine trees; to learn from Gary; and to grow together as a Young Living family. The familial feeling, as it turns out, was a defining highlight for the attending distributors.

“When I first got here, it was like going to my grandmother’s when I was growing up,” said Beatrice Romo, a new distributor from Colorado. “Everybody was working together and after the work had been done, we were just fellowshipping together. It made me feel like I was in a perfect place.”

Fellowshipping is a description that came up often when distributors spoke about their time at the harvest. Nathan Peachey, a distributor from Pennsylvania, said the community feeling is unique to Young Living.

“The aspect of coming out here in the mountains is that we get to form a communal-type fellowship with people who have the same interests and desires,” he said. “It just really builds a wonderful fellowship.”

For some, like distributors Max and Karen Hopkins from Oklahoma, experiencing a harvest and actively engaging in the Seed to Seal® process is a dream realised after years of desiring to do so.

“I’m ready to see the distillation process,” said Max. “I’ve been waiting three years to see this process, something I knew I wanted to be a part of after a teleconference call three years ago. We’re just really excited to be here!”

Part of the renewed excitement regarding the Winter Harvest this year has stemmed from the near palace-like lodging accommodations at both farms. Gone are the days of sleeping bags and tents; distributors were treated to warm rooms with bunk beds, dining rooms, and full kitchens. In making the experience more comfortable for all participants, Young Living’s goal is for everyone

to come away with warm memories and a life-benefiting experience that leads to transformation.

One person who squeezed every last opportunity out of the Winter Harvest this year was David Taylor from Florida, who chose to be in the freezing wilderness with Gary over attending the International Grand Convention in Salt Lake City.

“I love this,” said David. “To be at the Winter Harvest to work alongside Gary is reason number one for me to be here. To work side by side with him and to see him work instead of seeing him on stage in a suit, to me, this is more like who Gary Young is. I wanted this opportunity and I’m getting it.”

FarmSimiane-la-Rotonde, FranceWorkers at the France farm are happy to report that lavender seeds from the farms in St. maries and mona will be planted in April and will be ready to harvest this July. In conjunction with this exciting summer harvest event, the farm staff is also planning a celebration of the farm’s 20th anniversary.

Guayaquil, EcuadorThe Ecuador farm is actively producing ylang ylang during the current rainy season. Young Living employees are also working closely with the local government to overcome the hurdles of finalising the ability to import rosewood to the farm.

Mona, UtahThe mona farm is relatively quiet as winter has set in, but the expansion of the lavender fields continues. Farm workers are getting ready for spring and are scheduled to plant lavender and oregano during the first week of April. These plantings are an exciting step in Young Living’s Seed to Seal process!

St. Maries, IdahoDistillation of the recently harvested trees is taking place in coordination with the Winter Harvest. Distributors had their best experiences yet at the harvest, thanks to improved accommodations and a larger cement pad for distilling.

Highland Flats, IdahoThe dedicated distributors at the Highland Flats farm made history during the Winter Harvest as they harvested pine for the first time at this event. The farm staff is already gearing up for April, when they will host the annual replanting of balsam fir, red cedar, and pine trees. Housing facilities for the event are nearly completed, which is making for happy and warm distributors.

Salalah, OmanThe oman farm has received additional Boswellia sacra frankincense trees from the personal farm of His majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said of oman. other native plants from the sultan’s collection have been planted at the oman farm as well.

What’s new

In December Dr. Cole Woolley, Young Living’s director of research and discovery, visited the oman farm to conduct research with Dr. mahmoud Suhail. Their research focused on the processing of sacred frakincense and omani frankincense powder. They toured the World Heritage frankincense site and received instruction on frankincense tree propagation.

Research

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT Marc Schreuder: the “mad scientist” generating results with unleashed enthusiasm

When Marc Schreuder arrives at the Young Living corporate office, everyone knows it. His animated enthusiasm resonates from his research laboratory on the first floor all the way to the third-floor offices. After 15 years of serving alongside Gary Young in researching, developing, and formulating many of Young Living’s exclusive products, Marc has plenty to be enthusiastic about.

Years ago, when Young Living was

a small company located in Payson, Utah, the light in Marc’s tiny workspace could regularly be seen from the street at 2 a.m. His van seemed to live in the office parking lot. Co-workers and customers alike admired Marc’s tireless dedication and diligent work ethic—a modus operandi that continues to this day. Marc, however, is quick to shy away from words of praise for his countless contributions to Young Living’s global success and humbly replies, “I’m only here to serve. I just want to make things better.”

A diligent messenger of wellness, purpose, and abundance, Marc took centre stage last year at Young Living’s Australian convention in Brisbane as he literally became “a product of the products.” Marc also unveiled a very personal transformation. “In November of 2010 I weighed over 195 pounds. Now I weigh 152. My energy levels have exploded and I feel like a new man.” Marc’s revelation serves as further proof of how Young Living leads the way in

the research and development of life-changing products.

In addition to his new physique, Marc was recently promoted from director of formulations to senior director of research and discovery, a role that will allow him to further invigorate the lives of Young Living employees, distributors, and product manufacturers worldwide. Because he has worked so closely with Gary—often traveling across the globe at a moment’s notice—Marc is uniquely qualified to serve as an ambassador and steward of the Young Living lifestyle.

Those who have heard Marc present at conventions and other Young Living gatherings can attest that his knowledge, passion, and willingness to openly share is something that everyone should witness. All of us at Young Living, especially Gary and Mary, congratulate and thank Marc for his 15 years of service and are excited to experience the future results of his unfettered enthusiasm.

Not long ago Cory Weaver was getting ready to wrap up a successful 28-year stint with the federal government, where he held various supervisory, operations, human resources, and logistics operations positions, and retire to a quiet, active life. The time was right; he had dutifully earnt a permanent vacation after the last decade and after serving nearly three decades as an Army reservist and a civil service member.

Those plans all changed in one day

when Gary Young came to Cory with a proposition: manage and direct Young Living’s six global farms.

“After spending some time with Gary and learning about his vision for the farms, I saw an opportunity to take something and run with it in the sense that I would be able to meet the expectations and goals that Gary really wanted set for the farms all along,” explains Cory. “Because I was getting ready to retire, I thought about the opportunity for quite some time. With my MBA in HR and logistics and all my years of experience and knowing about animals and farming, I told Gary I would go ahead and accept the challenge.”

The idea of getting back to his roots excited Cory. While growing up assisting his great-grandfather and uncles in agriculturally focused Logan, Utah, Cory worked tirelessly with his great-grandfather on a sheep farm and with his grandfather, who was a volunteer with the forest

service, horseback riding in wilderness areas during the summers. It was during these enriching years that Cory developed a genuine love and appreciation for farming and horses.

These experiences led him to growing his own organic crops and producing a specialty blend of feed for his horses, an animal that will begin to take on a more central role in Young Living’s future.

“Besides the people, who are just top quality, what is really exciting about this position is that every farm is unique; from location and culture to methods and production, each farm is an awesome challenge,” admits Cory. “Since I have been involved with the farms, it has become obvious to me that what makes Young Living great is that it is a company that whole-heartedly believes it can change the way humans feel about taking care of themselves. When it gets right down to it, Young Living is out there to make a difference in the world.”

Two events received news coverage on December 21, 2011, and January 2, 2012, that left some people with questions. Researchers at Young Living Essential Oils would like to answer those questions with the following report.

Ningxia, China: The BBC reported on January 2, 2012, that unrest had broken out in Taoshan village, in Tongxin County of the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. The Hui people who populate this area are a Muslim minority group. Apparently, local police tore down a newly renovated mosque saying it was an illegal structure, which then caused the unrest.

The wolfberry producing area of Ningxia is Zhongning County, which is a good distance away from the unrest and not affected at all by this disturbance.

Frankincense production in Ethiopia: In late December 2011, a study by Dutch and Ethiopian researchers raised unnecessary fears about availability of frankincense. Young Living obtained a copy of the study “Limitations to sustainable frankincense production: blocked regeneration, high adult mortality and declining populations”, as printed in The Journal of Applied Ecology, a publication of the British Ecology Society. The following points need to be made clear.

The study tracked only the frankincense species Boswellia papyrifera in northern Ethiopia, while news reports made claims suggesting the study referred to all frankincense

species. Young Living sells Boswellia carteri and Boswellia sacra, not papyrifera.

The study reported that cattle grazing and attacks by long-horn beetles (Idactus spinipennis) were mostly to blame for papyrifera trees dying in Ethiopia.

The authors of the study were surprised to find that trees that were tapped for their resin “presented higher diameter growth rates and fecundity [reproductive fertility] compared to untapped populations” [in other words, it is not harmful to tap frankincense trees!].

The projected forecast of a “90 percent decline in the size of tapped and untapped populations within 50 years and a 50 percent decline in frankincense yield within 15 years” applies only to Ethiopian papyrifera trees.

Ethiopia is apparently not working to preserve its frankincense supply. The update below shows the working relationship between Young Living’s Oman farm and the Sultan of Oman, two Omani entities that are both working to preserve and enhance Oman’s Boswellia sacra trees.

“The Oman Farm has received additional Boswellia sacra frankincense trees from the personal farm of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said of Oman. Other native plants have also been planted at the Oman Farm from the Sultan’s collection.”

A look into recent news events

A tumour-cell specific study published in the journal BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine (December 2011) discusses the power of boswellic acids in Boswellia sacra essential oil. Authors of the study are Mahmoud M. Suhail, Cole Woolley, Gary Young, HK Lin, and colleagues.

Some people who are not well acquainted with essential oil-distillation science have said that if boswellic acids are found in frankincense essential oil, it must mean the boswellic acids were added after distillation. They are wrong!

Perhaps these people only know about GC-MS testing. A little more study will reveal to them that boswellic acids must be detected by high-performance liquid chromatography or HPLC. In the study

mentioned above, boswellic acid testing was provided by San Rafael Chemical Services (Salt Lake City, UT).

Here is the technical information about this HPLC testing for boswellic acids. A sample of sacra oil was analysed by HPLC (Hewlett Packard model 1090 II/L) with synergi hydro-RP, 150 x 3.0 mm, 4 μm, 80 Å columns. Boswellic acids were detected by a photodiode array detector, scanning from 190 to 600 nm, and qualification was performed at 205 nm.

All this technical information is to document the fact that frankincense essential oil—whether from Boswellia carteri, Boswelia sacra, or Boswellia serrata—does contain boswellic acids. Boswellic acids are important compounds that have been studied for their effects on various biological functions.

It is interesting that Boswellia frereana, which comes from Somalia, is the exception, as it has no boswellic acids. Researchers at Cardiff University in Wales reported that “Although B. frereana has the genealogy of the Boswellia species, little is known about the bioactive ingredients, except that it is devoid of the a- and B-boswellic acids

that are characteristics of the other family members.” 1A study by Frank and Unger states, “The six boswellic acids . . . are the typical ingredients found in frankincense from B. carteri, B. sacra and B. serrata but not in B. frereana.”2

Other peer-reviewed studies have documented boswellic acids in frankincense oil and extracts. Again, using HPLC technology, Japanese scientists identified B-boswellic acid, plus seven other boswellic acids.3 Other studies have also identified boswellic acids in frankincense extracts. 4.5

The December 2011 study by Gary Young, Cole Woolley, HK Lin and Mahmoud Suhail also tested two temperatures for sacra distillation, 78°C and 100°C. The researchers reported that the higher distillation temperature produced higher quantities of boswellic acids. Scientific research is greatly enhanced when an essential oil company owns its own distillation equipment!
