Dow Building Solutions has made its core range of STYROFOAM-A and XENERGY thermal insulation products available as Building Information Modelling (BIM) objects through the National Building Specification (NBS) National BIM library. The new BIM objects – which include ROOFMATE, FLOORMATE, PERIMATE and XENERGY extruded polystyrene (XPS) products – are also available via the company’s website. Dow Building Solutions’ objects are available in industry-neutral Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) format and formats compatible with Autodesk Revit,

ArchiCAD, Vectorworks, Tekla and Bentley. Dow Building Solutions offers insulation that helps enable construction of energy efficient buildings. STYROFOAM-A and XENERGY foams have uniform closed cell structures and smooth surface ‘skins’, together with high compressive strength and low water absorption, resulting in long term insulation performance. BIM objects are available for FLOORMATE-A (for below-slab insulation); ROOFMATE SL-A (for inverted roof insulation); ROOFMATE LG-A (for parapet insulation) and PERIMATE DI-A (for insulation of basement walls).BIM objects have also been provided for XENERGY SL, Dow Building Solutions’ latest generation XPS for insulation of inverted flat roofs. XENERGY offers the

benefits of STYROFOAM XPS - durability, reliability and strength – but with even better insulation performance, due to infra-red blocking particles which scatter and reflect heat radiation within the foam.www.styrofoam.co.uk www.nationalbimlibrary.com

Concrete And Clay Industries Partner With WRAP To Develop Resource Efficiency Action Plans (REAPS)The Construction Industry’s key manufacturing sectors of clay bricks and clay blocks, precast concrete and ready-mixed concrete, have joined forces to launch Resource Efficiency Action Plans (REAPs) demonstrating their commitment to increasing the opportunity for recycling and reusing recovered materials, throughout the whole-life of these materials.

This is an industry led initiative supported with Government funding by resource efficiency experts WRAP, and with technical input from Ceram (for clay bricks and blocks, and precast concrete) and BRE (for ready-mixed concrete). The REAPs have been developed to assist the supply chain that ranges from raw material extraction through to the demolition/deconstruction of buildings, in identifying and creating an actionable strategy for reducing waste and improving resource efficiency.

These action plans address a diverse range of resource efficiency issues, wider reaching than some of the REAPs developed previously. They tackle a broad scope of resource efficiency and address the significant impact indicators of waste, water, carbon, (energy usage and emissions), materials and bio diversity, as championed by the Green Construction Board “Greening the Industry” campaign to the full lifecycle of a construction product as defined in EN15804.

The Brick Development Association (BDA), British Ready-Mixed Concrete Association (BRMCA) and British Precast, together with a diverse group of organisations and stakeholders, have worked together to provide a roadmap to improve resource efficiency and the sustainability of heavyweight construction solutions and the UK built environment. Sub groups have been set up to develop specific, measureable, achievable, realistic and time bound Action Plans to improve the resource efficiency in the supply chain of the construction sector for each product area in the following segments:

• Manufacturing• Logisticsandpackaging• Designforuseandreuse• Constructionprocess• Demolition

The actions generated will provide a range of approaches for continual improvement of this sector. These include the need to transfer knowledge in the form of formal CPD programmes, guidance documents and training packages, and where appropriate,

recommendation for investment in equipment and infrastructure that will deliver resource efficient improvements.

Emma Hines, Chair of the Ready-Mixed Concrete Resource Efficiency Action Plan and Sustainable Construction Manager for Lafarge Tarmac said: “We are delighted that the work of the REAP projects has both underpinned the existing Concrete Industry Sustainable Construction Strategy and also provided the construction industry with a range of actions that will improve material efficiency, improve process and service to clients as well as save time and cost. The launch of the REAPs coincides with the publication of the concrete industry’s 6th Annual Performance Report which reports on data collected across a range of holistic indicators and provides the spring board for new commitments and targets set by and for the Industry looking toward 2020 and beyond.’’

David Manley, Chair of the Precast Concrete Resource Efficiency Action Plan and Sustainability Manager for Hanson Building Products said: “The supply chain has an important part to play in delivering reduced impacts from the built environment, but it needs full collaboration between the sectors to succeed. Development of these REAPs shows how the industry can work together for the benefit of all. The precast concrete sector is committed to the efficient use of resources throughout the product lifecycle and our sector sustainability targets also launched today embrace the recommendations of the REAP project, as well as being aligned with the concrete industry strategy”.

John Sandford, Sustainability Director for Wienerberger and Chairman of the Clay Brick and Clay Block REAP added: “Brick already has a long service life, but by driving down waste and losses throughout the supply chain we can further reduce the life cycle environmental impacts. In parallel with the REAP we are launching updated sector Sustainability Key Performance Indicators which for the first time include quantitative targets to 2020. We are also about to launch one of the first new generation Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) to be prepared by the Building Research Establishment (BRE). These initiatives allow us to demonstrate the sustainability credentials of clay bricks and clay blocks as a flexible and contemporary building solution’’.

Developing a REAP brings together stakeholders from across the construction supply chain to identify and prioritise actions to work towards reducing the overall environmental impact of construction materials and contribute to the UK Government’s aspirations of a low carbon, sustainable construction sector. Launching the REAPs together is evidence in itself of the benefit of collaboration in achieving a sustainable built environment. www.brick.org.uk

Wood Awards 2013 - Naturally Beautiful, Infinitely VersatileWith the winners of the Wood Awards – the UK’s premier award scheme celebrating excellence in design in wood in British architecture and furniture – being announced later in November, we take a closer look at a few of this year’s shortlist.

The 30-strong shortlist features unique private houses, stunning small projects, outstanding restorations, impressive public buildings and extraordinary bespoke and production-made furniture, ranging from the traditional to the cutting edge.

“While timber’s natural beauty and versatility lends itself to bold, eye-catching projects with architectural flair, it is more practical applications and hard-nosed economic facts that make it increasingly in demand within the UK’s built environment,” says David Hopkins, Wood for Good’s head of external affairs. “The continuing demand for sustainable building materials and peak energy performance from finished buildings naturally play to wood’s strength as a low-carbon material with high insulation properties. The variety of projects showcased on the 2013 Wood Awards shortlist underlines the significance of timber in modern British architecture.”

Alex Monroe Studio, London by DSDHA using KLH cross laminated engineered timber panels using Austrian spruce.A wonderful example of a bespoke timber interior where the structure, joinery and furniture are made from the same timber material, but this project also demonstrates that the use of timber in the construction of buildings can achieve negative net CO2 emissions. The KLH cross-laminated timber volume for this project was 38m3. KLH panels removed approximately 30.4 tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere. 3.3 tonnes of emitted CO2 from transporting the KLH panels from Austria to London. Offsetting the CO2 emissions from the transport therefore shows a 'nett gain' of 27.1 tonnes (CO2 removed from the atmosphere).

Abraham Darby Sports and Learning Community , Shropshire by BDP using European spruce glulam and CLT, European larch glulam and Canadian Western Red Cedar cladding. Rated BREEAM “Excellent”, the design of the structural timber elements and connection details were all carefully crafted to meet with the aesthetic aspirations of the design team, whilst maintaining practicality for fabrication and erection; all helping maintain affordability. The large structural timber members act as carbon sinks. The carbon sequestered within the primary school structure alone is equivalent to approximately two years of CO2 emissions.

The Colyer-Fergusson Building, Kent by Tim Ronalds Architects using Canadian Douglas Fir plywood and solid timber, and European oak flooring.Tim Ronalds Architects decided at the outset that timber would be used throughout the public spaces to provide the warmth and acoustic qualities conducive to music. Canadian Douglas Fir was chosen for its colour and vitality, and is used for wall and ceiling finishes, doors, joinery, and handrails. The building is rated BREEAM "Very Good".

As the flagship for wood in the best of British architecture, furniture and design, the Wood Awards is made possible by the major sponsorship of AHEC, Canada Wood, the Carpenters’ Company, TRADA and Wood for Good. Other sponsors include American Softwoods, BRE and the Forestry Commission.

York Handmade Celebrates Its 25th AnniversaryThe award-winning York Handmade Brick Company, the largest independent brickmaker in the north of England, celebrates its 25th anniversary this month. York Handmade, which has worked on iconic buildings such as the Shard, Highbury Football Stadium and Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester, was founded by chairman and manager director David Armitage in 1988.

Previously the Alne Brick Company, based in Forest Lane, Alne, near Easingwold, York Handmade now has an annual turnover of £2 million and employs 25 dedicated staff. David Armitage commented: “It has been a hugely enjoyable, though challenging, 25 years. We

have grown from a very small brick factory in a North Yorkshire village to a successful and award-winning brick company that is well-known and respected on the national stage.

“The progress we have made in the last 25 years would not have been possible without the loyal service and dedicated expertise of York Handmade’s management team and our skilled employees in the factory and we owe them all a great deal,” said Mr Armitage. When York Handmade started in 1988, the company inherited a derelict factory, which wasn’t even making bricks at

all but was primarily engaged in the production of drainage tiles for agricultural purposes.

Mr Armitage explained: “When I bought the factory in 1988, the prime objective was to create a strong local business, employing local people and boosting the local economy. Now, over £2m investment later, the company boasts a dedicated modern handmade brick factory and my objective has been achieved”.

He said: “Like every other SME in the construction industry, York Handmade has had to fight hard over the last five years to stay in business and to progress. We feel we have succeeded in that prime objective and are well placed to go forward for the next 25 years with confidence”.

York Handmade has a remarkable record in the Brick Awards during the past decade. These national awards, run by the Brick Development Association in conjunction with Building magazine, are the brick industry’s Oscars. The buildings which won the awards for York Handmade were: Four Oaks in Little Bedwyn, Wilts (Best Single House); Tupgill Cellar, near Middleham, North Yorkshire (Best Craftsmanship); and Chetham’s School of Music, Manchester (Specialist Brickwork Contractor).

The judges paid tribute to York Handmade’s work at Tupgill, the home of the famous Forbidden Corner tourist attraction, saying: “It was obvious to pick Tupgill Cellar as the winner of its category. It is magical to look at. A wide variety of handmade specials were personally designed by the manufacturer and the result is outstanding.”

And the judges commended Chetham’s School of Music for “being an outstanding showcase for brick. It is a tour de force of brickwork and the beauty of the design, choice of brick and impeccable detail are very difficult to find fault with.” David Armitage added: “It is important to stress that our three winning entries were completely different jobs in design and execution, graphically illustrating our ability to work in a wide variety of colours and styles. We believe we can tackle any brickwork project successfully.”

Meanwhile in 2009 the company was short-listed for the Best Educational Building award for its work on De Grey Court at York St John University. www.yorkhandmade.co.uk

Just six months after one of its mineral fibre tiles became the first in the world to be granted basic Cradle to Cradle® certification, Armstrong Ceilings has gone one better. Not content to rest on its laurels, Armstrong’s Perla OP 0.95 tile, which contains 53% recycled content and is 100% recyclable, is now accredited to Silver status. In addition to this, it performs acoustically to Sound Absorption Class A and is highly light reflective (85%), being available in Board, Tegular, MicroLook and SL2 edges.Cradle to Cradle products are assessed on five criteria – material health, material re-utilisation, renewable energy and carbon management, water stewardship and social responsibility – and awarded one of four levels of certification, from basic through to platinum. The Cradle to Cradle philosophy differs from other sustainable certifications in that the process begins even before a product is manufactured. Products are developed specifically for closed loop systems in which every ingredient is not only safe but beneficial, capable of either biodegrading naturally

and restoring the soil or to be fully recycled into high-quality materials for subsequent product generations, again and again. The programme is designed to give specifiers and clients a transparent mechanism to compare the sustainability performance of competitive products. As part of its Cradle to Cradle commitment, Armstrong is proud to be a participant of the Pavilions at Park 2020, a Cradle to Cradle inspired

Prime Minister Visits Portakabin Factory And Welcomes Announcement Of European Expansion Prime Minister, David Cameron, visited the Portakabin manufacturing centre and international headquarters in York yesterday and has welcomed the Group’s announcement that it is expanding its operations in Europe with plans to open its first hire and visitor centres in Luxembourg and in Toulouse in the south west of France. The expansion into Luxembourg will complement the Portakabin Group’s current operations in France, Belgium and Holland and follows its recent acquisition of Oecon Mobilraum

GmbH, the manufacturer and distributor of modular buildings in Germany.Speaking at a ‘PM Direct’ question and answer session with Portakabin staff in York, Prime Minister, David Cameron said, “Our economy is turning a corner, we’ve got to finish the job and make sure that people’s living standards improve in our country. Here at Portakabin, there are 200 extra people who have been employed and there is exciting news about the expansion of the company’s operations in Europe. Portakabin is a business that is investing more, that’s building more, that’s exporting more and that’s employing more – it’s a real Yorkshire success story!”Derek Carter, Chief Executive of the Portakabin Group, said, “We were delighted to welcome the Prime Minister here in York. We believe we have a unique position in the market, which is not currently being served in Luxembourg and so this latest expansion offers huge potential and opportunity for

Portakabin. It is also a positive move for the UK as the majority of our buildings for Europe will continue to be manufactured at our head office and production centre in York.”

“Luxembourg has one of the strongest economies in Europe and its financial services sector continues to be particularly buoyant. We have already had considerable success in the country, servicing customers via our Belgium operation, so we know the premium quality of our interim building solutions suits the Luxembourg market very well.” The demand for Portakabin interim modular buildings in Luxembourg has continued to grow in recent years and projects have previously been managed and delivered from its Belgium operation. In order to offer even better customer service locally in Luxembourg, Portakabin has just opened its first office in the centre of the capital, and plans are in place to expand this on a larger site to accommodate additional office space, storage and operations facilities and a display area so customers can see a range of Portakabin buildings at first hand. This investment will allow more buildings to be held in stock to further reduce lead times and improve customer choice, as well as to meet the rapid growth in demand. The new Portakabin hire operation in Luxembourg will target similar sectors to its 50 UK hire and visitor centres, providing high quality short-term building solutions for schools and universities, local authorities, hospitals and clinics, commercial and financial services organisations, and transport companies. In France, Portakabin has announced its expansion in the south west of the country with the opening of a new hire and visitor centre in Toulouse. This region is currently supported from the Portakabin base in Bordeaux. The new move will provide a strategic link between France and Spain and is a key location for the aeronautical industry. In terms of economic activity, Toulouse is the third largest city after Paris and Lyon.Due to open this autumn, the base for Portakabin in Toulouse will provide offices, display buildings, operations facilities and storage for hire buildings available from stock.www.portanews.co.uk

New raiNscreeN app proviDes speciFicatioN oN the move

iTunes has recently approved a brand new Rainscreen App, developed by EJOT UK. Recognised internationally as a leading developer and manufacturer of technical fastenings, EJOT’s product portfolio comprehensively covers every facet of Rainscreen installation and the new App provides specifiers and designers with a complete overview of the route to specification, via area of application.

The App’s Top level navigation utilises a touch screen graphic to guide the user through the four key elements of assembly technique; substrate fixing, frame fastening, insulation anchorage and fascia panel fastening. The new App then categorically matches all materials and substrates with the correct fastening technique and product.

To further enhance the offline viewing experience, EJOT has included a project gallery to demonstrate some spectacular examples of Rainscreen installations that have utilised the company’s products worldwide. These include O2 World in Berlin, the Varyap Meridian building in Istanbul – and closer to home, the new Heslington East Campus at York University.

Also provided is an overview of EJOT UK’s testing and development wing Applitec, unique in the UK but working in tandem with the EJOT Group’s head offices in Germany. The new Rainscreen Specification App by EJOT UK is for iPad iOS 5.0 and above. It can be downloaded by visiting iTunes store and searching for Rainscreen. www.ejot.co.uk

A highly innovative, bespoke and energy-efficient aluminium and glass façade solution has been developed and engineered by Wicona for a new landmark headquarters scheme in the Black Forest in Germany for Testo AG – the world’s leading supplier of portable measuring technology. The five-storey building has a vibrant design featuring natural stone cladding and a highly complex, bespoke glass and aluminium façade construction. At the north and south ends of the building, the Wicona glazing system is constructed as L-shaped units which overlap and tilt outwards, creating a strong, sculptural effect.

This specially-designed solution comprises both fixed glazing and concealed vents for natural ventilation, with additional acoustic protection where the building is close to a busy road. The units were prefabricated to minimise work on site, ensure the highest levels of precision and accurate tolerances, and to avoid the effect of inclement weather conditions. The side walls of the building are angled for a dynamic appearance and comprise a unique ribbon window design with integrated ventilation, interspersed with horizontal bands of smooth limestone cladding. The specially adapted Wicona profiles and areas of triple glazing achieve U values for the glazed units as low as 1.3 W/m2K to deliver excellent thermal efficiency. The façade design also had to incorporate external solar protection – and this project is believed to be the first to feature an angled façade with external slatted blinds. At ground floor level and for the two-storey reception area, Wicona’s WICTEC 50 stick curtain walling to passive house standards was used to create an inclined façade. The angle increases from one mullion to the next which meant every pane of glass was different. This system achieved an outstanding U value of just 0.84 W/m2K to minimise the building’s carbon footprint even further. www.wicona.co.uk

OPINION

Essentially the circuit lines of a traditional distribution system, a modular wiring system is designed and prefabricated off-site in a plug and play format. When delivered to site, the system requires no hard wiring - every part of the system is connected using colour coded plugs - making it extremely quick and simple to install. The systems are available as radial and ring main up to 32amps.

The benefits of such a design are obvious: rapid installation, less labour and a lower skill level, flexibility, quality and lower costs. However, selecting a quality modular wiring system is essential if you are to reap the benefits of this modern building practice. So what constitutes quality?

CABLE90% of a modular wiring system is composed of cable so quality cable is essential. The only way of guaranteeing this is by third party approval through British Approvals Service for Cables (BASEC).

Additional considerations include the bending radius and the choice of cable type.

The bending radius of armoured and unarmoured cable should be seven times the diameter of the cable. Anything less than this and the design of the system may be compromised or the cable become damaged as it is bent beyond its capability. In terms of choice of cable, a quality modular wiring system will be capable of being designed and manufactured from a range of cable types and armouring to meet the specific site requirements.

CONDUITThere are two approaches taken by manufacturers: the first and by far the best involves laying armouring over the cores; the second, and to be avoided, is where the core is threaded through the conduit. The former is better for the bending radius and protection of cores, reducing the chance of damage and allowing for longer lengths. This in turn allows for greater flexibility in the individual system design for a project.

INTERLOCKING PARTSIf the interlocking parts are poorly designed or made the system may lose connectivity, making it useless. The plugs should have a robust locking mechanism whilst at the same time be easy to connect at installation or refurbishment stage.

TRACEABILITYTraceability in manufacturing has become a major issue in the drive to improve total quality control. But genuine - valuable - traceability practice has to include every component in a system; it can’t simply stop at who manufactured the cable as that has very little value and in reality tells you nothing of the system quality.

A top notch manufacturer will be able to trace each and every system component. At Modular Wiring Systems we can trace all the way back not just to the cable, but to the source of copper within that cable. For us it’s easier as our parent company Tratos manufactures all of the cables used in our systems in its BASEC approved factory.

TESTINGEach and every component part - including the copper, the cable, the joins etc - should be tested individually, preferably using ATE (automatic testing equipment) that is fully calibrated. Systems that have undergone such rigorous testing are easy to identify as the manufacturer applies a test sticker with a serial number to every part of the system tested. Batch testing of a system and its components is not acceptable.

MANUFACTURER SUPPORTA good, experienced manufacturer should be able to provide you with support and guidance throughout a project to ensure you get the most benefit from using a modular wiring system. That support should include detailed CAD drawings, the allocation of an in-house project engineer for one point of contact throughout the process and the ability to make bespoke product to solve any on site challenges that may arise. The latter aspect can only realistically be achieved if the company has UK manufacturing facilities, as to design, build and supply a bespoke item from abroad is unlikely to meet your time frame.

With greater focus than ever before being placed on sustainability and ‘green’ building techniques at the same time as a need to reduce costs, modular wiring systems score high. Wastage is reduced as there is no requirement for cutting and fabrication on site and costs are reduced as a system can be installed up to 80% quicker than traditional methods and utilising 70% less labour. But this only applies to a well designed system, manufactured under strict control using quality components. Use a lesser system that scrimps on components, testing etc and you might get away with it. However, the more likely scenario is you spending time and money to put it right and generating a whole lot of bad will in the process. www.modularwiring.com

NEW Stannah Midilift SLplus Launches In City Community Centre

Stannah’s brand new Midilift SLplus vertical cabin platform lift has debuted in a new, purpose-built Community Centre in London.

Part of Blackfriars Settlement – a registered charity providing community services and support to local people – the Centre is part of an urban regeneration programme that also includes 15 new affordable homes. Located in the ground-floor main atrium, the hydraulic-drive Midilift SLplus cabin platform lift carries a rated load of 400kg at a speed of 0.15m/s between two floors – a distance of 3510mm. It brings access to a full range of facilities, from meeting, educational, computer and activity rooms, to a hall, café, and assorted learning resources. Reflecting the contemporary building’s light, spacious aesthetic and efficient, friendly functionality, the Midilift SLplus features fully glazed panoramic landing doors with a satin stainless steel interior, new grid-style ceiling and lighting, automatic controls, flush-

mounted call stations and intercom. The platform size is a roomy 1100mm x 1400mm. The lift was handed over ready for the opening of the building. Introduced to bridge the gap between the Midilift SL and Midilift XLplus cabin platform lift models, the Midilift SLplus offers the benefits of simple installation, no pit and low running costs. It looks and behaves more like a conventional passenger lift – a key factor in its specification, as Blackfriars Director, Julie

Corbett-Bird, comments: “Having looked at our options – traditional passenger lifts and wheelchair platform lifts – we went with the new Stannah Midilift SLplus because of its highly cost-effective, structure-supported enclosure which meant we could install a lift without having to provide a shaft. Health & Safety considerations also played a key part in our decision-making process.” From start to finish, the Midilift SLplus took less than 7 days to install. It has been such a success that another is being installed to serve two floors in a different part of the complex – office accommodation available for rent. The Midilift SLplus is Part M (England & Wales) and Section 4.2 (Scotland) compliant; meets the requirements of the Equality Act 2010; and is serviced by the London & South East (Dartford) branch of Stannah Lift Services, part of a nationwide network providing 24 hour, 365 days a year support.www.stannahlifts.co.uk

The impressive Jamia Mosque Sultania and Education Centre in the mill town of Brierfield, Lancashire is now complete following a ten year design and build project and an investment of £3.5 million from the local Muslim community. The new building, by architect Mr. Al-Samairre of Archi-Structure, Baildon, West Yorkshire, is now one of the largest mosques in Lancashire serving up to 2000 worshippers.

The interior decoration honours the past by using many traditional materials while also embracing modern methods of construction and advanced, high-performance materials such as DuPont™ Corian®.

The new facility is dedicated to both education and worship and features eight classrooms on the lower ground floor. The spacious

main prayer hall offers a ladies prayer area on a mezzanine level for which a special design solution was needed to elegantly separate and yet connect the two areas.

Designer Umar Faruque of Studio Architekton, who specialises in contemporary Islamic interiors, was called in to create this feature and came up with the concept of thirty-eight decorative arches inspired by the Moorish architecture of Andalusia. The arches were designed to complement the marble sourced from Pakistan and Turkey that features in the main hall, but for this project the designer wanted a flexible modern material that would work in harmony with the aesthetic while also being easy to fabricate and fit.

Umar Faruque was familiar with the properties of DuPont™ Corian® and the creative way in which these have been applied to various projects around the world, and he was keen to explore the material’s flexibility and flawless finish for this design. Umar chose local

specialists M and L Solid Surfaces for the onsite design, fabrication and installation of the arches because, having worked with them previously, he was aware of their background in engineering and their ability to achieve the precise tolerances required for this project. The arches were constructed from an MDF base and the two colours of Corian® specified for the design (the deep, rich tone of Cocoa Brown and the veined mineral aesthetic of Arrow Root), were a 90% match to the colours of the marble in the main prayer hall.

Working with technical support from CD (UK) Ltd, the distributors of DuPont™ Corian® in the UK, M and L Solid Surfaces completed the manufacture and installation of the arches within 12 weeks, using 30 sheets of the material. Skilled techniques used to fabricate the complex curves of the arch design included thermoforming and the seamless bonding of the two chosen colours to ensure a sleek, uniform finish throughout. The arch design is now a stand-out feature that has become one of the most distinctive and admired within the building.

Khalid Hussain, on behalf of the new mosque comments, “The Sultania Mosque build has been a huge project for the community and those involved in the construction; everyone is delighted with the final result and appreciative of such a unique building with its many artistic features, all complementing each other. The use of DuPont™ Corian® for the arches was a new but ingenious idea to us; we are pleased with how beautiful it looks, it has become one of the main talking points about the design.”

Masud Ahmed of the Brierfield Mosque continues “We were unaware that a material famous for worktops could be so adaptable and creative, and our faith in the architect and contractor has been rewarded with a quality product and design, which has been completed to a very high standard. The work of Umar Faruque, M and L Solid Surfaces and CD UK, will be widely appreciated by our community for many years to come.” www.corian.co.uk

moNolith Gets straiGht to the poiNt oF Bathroom reDesiGN iN milaN

When it came to modernising the 1960s-built Four Points by Sheraton hotel in the centre of Milan, updating the guest bathrooms was crucial to maintaining its luxury four-star status. However, with any downtime being a costly business, getting the 254 rooms back into service as quickly as possible was also vital for the hotel’s owner and manager Maurizio Naro. The savvy hotelier, who has been at the helm of the 12-storey complex for 25 years, overcame this issue in two ways; by carrying out the refurbishment work in stages and by choosing Geberit Monolith sanitary modules for the guest bathrooms, thereby keeping installation time to a minimum. In order to ensure that the everyday running of the hotel was not overly affected by construction noise and dust, careful planning was a vital part of the refurbishment process at the Four Points in Milan. For Maurizio,

this included a visit to the annual International Furniture Fair, where he identified the Geberit Monolith as the solution to his renovation dilemma. The Geberit Monolith sanitary module makes light work of upgrading sanitaryware as part of a refurbishment project and is available for washbasins, WCs and bidets. It can be connected to existing water and drainage connections without any major structural changes, which eradicates the need for retiling or redecorating the bathroom once fitted. The Geberit Monolith has an elegant glass surface, which can be specified in a choice of Black, White, Umber or Mint Green, which

neatly conceals all of the fittings, leaving a minimalist finish, whilst its slim profile means it doesn‘t impinge on space, even in compact bathrooms. By choosing the Geberit Monolith sanitary module for WCs and bidets, the renovation work on the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel was sped up significantly, with the first batch of 66 bathrooms complete and being enjoyed by guests in a matter of days. www.geberit.co.uk

Sun control significantly impacts the interior light and climate of a building. It blocks out annoying sun rays and keeps the interior temperature at appropriate levels the whole year round. In order to display the effects of sun control on indoor spaces, Hunter Douglas has developed a Light & Energy software tool that provides exact measurements of visual comfort and climate control. Four different scenarios can be outlined on the basis of different kinds of sun control, each one indicating which comfort and energy effects a change will produce in the room. The user can compare scenarios and calculate indoor temperatures and how the light falls in a room under different sun control conditions. This means the energy capacity required to heat or cool a room can also be calculated. The tool therefore quickly and easily highlights poor choices, such as an overly transparent and light-weight roller blind that lets in too much light for the user to be able to work comfortably on a computer. The data produced by the Light & Energy Tool for a given building are presented in a report in PDF-format. The Hunter Douglas Light & Energy Tool can be downloaded free of charge at http://tools.hde.nl/energytool2/tool.html

ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROL/EBPR 25

The issue of heat loss at the perimeter floor/wall junction, as well as other cold bridges around the building envelope can be successfully addressed through the use of Thermoblock, manufactured by Marmox (UK) Ltd.

The loadbearing composite product has been developed to be incorporated into various wall constructions as a horizontal layer, equivalent to a course of bricks, in order to address a critical area of heat loss; thereby reducing energy bills and making a significant contribution to SAP (Standard Assessment Procedure) calculations. Each length of Thermoblock is comprised of ultra-high performance XPS insulation, encapsulating miniature columns of concrete; while the top and bottom are covered by alkali resistant glass-fibre mesh, retaining a surface of fibre reinforced polymer concrete to facilitate bonding.

Individual units are 65 mm deep and feature a 15 mm overlap at either end, giving them an installed length of 600 mm; they are available in widths of 100 and 140 mm and are installed at the base of the inner leaf to an exterior masonry wall, normally level with the insulation beneath the floor screed. They can, however, be employed within a timber frame construction and at other positions such as beneath window openings or at first floor level, the roof-wall junction and under party walls.

Although a conventional DPC should still be incorporated into any wall construction, the impervious nature of Thermoblock means it forms a further horizontal barrier to moisture ingress. Wherever they are installed, the XPS with its ultra-low thermal transmittance increases the path for heat loss, making it a highly effective solution to dealing with the increasingly important effects of cold bridging. To achieve Level 4 of the Code for Sustainable Homes requires a 44 per cent improvement on energy performance set out in the 2006 edition of Part L to the Building Regulations.

In the very important area of the wall/floor junction, Enhanced Construction Details can cut heat loss by between 35 and 55 per cent; but utilizing Thermoblocks can reduce CO2 emissions still further to between 60 and 90 per cent, offering an important contribution to the points required in achieving CSH Level 4 or above. With the concrete columns having

a y-value of 0.225 W/mK but occupying only 10 per cent of the overall area, compared to the XPS insulation with its thermal conductivity of 0.033 W/mK, the combined y-value is 0.052 W/mK.

Crucially, being able to employ a defined, very low thermal transmittance – derived by thermal modelling or measurement – offers a far more advantageous result than adopting the ‘default’ figure offered in SAP. Using standard ACDs will add a heat loss of 0.08 Watts to the U-values for a property, while Enhanced Construction Details can cut this to 0.04 Watts; but incorporating Thermoblock can bring this right down to 0.01 Watts or less.

The same principle applies to the European PassivHaus standard or the recently launched Fabric Energy Efficiency Standard (FEES), which the Government is now promoting as the route to achieving Zero Carbon construction. Overall Marmox Thermoblock presents a fully compliant solution to addressing the issue of cold bridging which is also CFC and HCFC free with a zero Ozone Depletion Potential, offering ease of installation.

Furthermore the reduced energy consumption can also guarantee a pay back in as little as two to three years, depending on building configuration. Marmox (UK) Ltd. has published a fully illustrated, 16 page technical brochure on the benefits and application of Thermoblock, as well as offering a comprehensive specification advisory service. www.marmox.co.uk

Underfloor heating specialist Timoleon was among a number of construction manufacturers who responded to an appeal from a respected television programme, which was seeking to convert a family’s home near Hereford to the needs of their young son who suffers from a life-changing medical condition.

Fire-fighter Colin and his wife Clare had already invested a lot of time and effort in creating a comfortable home for their two sons, when Christopher, aged seven, was diagnosed with Duchennes Muscular Dystrophy; a neurological condition which swiftly affects the limbs and neck, requiring the person to rely on a wheelchair. The strategy for the conversion was worked out by occupational health specialists in conjunction with locally based DA Forrest Architectural Services, and involved completely re-building a two-storey section to the seventies style semi-detached property in the Bartestree area of Hereford.

A spokesperson for the project team told: “Sadly Christopher’s condition is just going to get worse. He already has to use a wheelchair and the family house just isn’t designed for these access requirements; and mum Clare has trouble getting him into bed when she is there on her own. “Because of behavioural issues associated with the condition, Christopher needs to be on the same level as his parents – so for this reason we planned a two-storey extension incorporating a through-the-floor lift, as well as a tracking and hoist system linking Christopher’s bedroom with a wet room. The whole house will be made wheelchair accessible with doors and openings being widened downstairs.” Timoleon’s contribution to this effort was in supplying its FoilBoard underfloor heating product as part of the build up to the ground floor structure, which was being relaid during the course of the conversion.

Importantly, underfloor heating not only frees up space in dwellings, but also provides an energy efficient and comfortable living environment without the air currents and cold zones common to radiator type emitters. The manufacturer’s engineer spent six hours on site, installing the FoilBoard sections over the concrete sub-floor, these then being overlaid with screed replacement boards which are also available from Timoleon as part of a system that avoids wet trades.

There are a number of options within the FoilBoard range, including a modular version for use with suspended timber floors or ceilings. The FoilBoard Floating as employed in the Hereford home can feature either high-strength CFC free polystyrene of wood fibre insulation and presents parallel grooves into which the underfloor heating pipe is laid. Tongue and groove boards are then laid installed above the aluminium diffuser as a floating floor offering excellent heat distribution.

The FoilBoard was installed throughout the conservatory extension with panels being cut to size where necessary, and the special end units create the return loops so that pipes are supported throughout the whole of their run. FoilBoard also lends itself to the creation of different heating zones in larger properties.

A spokesperson for the programme said: “Timoleon supplied this underfloor heating product to the family featured in the BBC One series, DIY SOS: The Big Build and installed it as part of a life-changing transformation to their home in Hereford.” www.timoleon.co.uk

The final stage of the £550 million redevelopment of London’s King’s Cross station has been completed, with the iconic station at the heart of a £2.2 billion regeneration of the surrounding district.King’s Cross Square, the 75,000 sq ft area to the front of the station, and which is larger than Leicester Square, was officially opened last month by Boris Johnson, London’s Mayor, and Patrick McLoughlin, the Transport Secretary.

King's Cross Station FrontageThe historic frontage of the station was completed with advanced systems from Wrightstyle, one of Europe’s leading steel and aluminium glazing companies. For the façade, the company supplied to SIS Security. Wrightstyle’s SG curtain walling systems form the station’s ground floor archways, and had to conform to strict criteria laid down by English Heritage – as well as having to deal with very high traffic volumes.

Western Transit ShedsSupplying to MERO-SCHMIDLIN, Wrightstyle also supplied a range of exterior doors for various parts of this renovated building which includes restaurants, a visitor centre and retail outlets. King’s Cross station is part of a 67 acre regeneration of the King’s Cross area that is creating 3.4 million sq ft of office space, 2,000 homes, 500,000 sq ft of retail space, 300 hotel bedrooms, and 650 student units.

Wrightstyle is a specialist in the design and supply of glazing systems to mitigate against fire, and bomb and ballistic attack. Its systems have been installed in transport projects in the UK and worldwide, including Hong Kong and Dubai. “This was a project that required a high level of design sensitivity, as well as being able to supply both fire-rated and non fire-rated doors and glazing systems. If you were thinking that in the event of a fire, it is the fire itself that kills, think again. Government statistics show that in fact it is toxic smoke that causes the most deaths with 34% of deaths due to the victims being overcome by gas, smoke or toxic fumes, compared to 25% of fatalities due to burns. Added to this, without ventilation the smoke temperature dramatically increases and visibility is significantly reduced, hindering escape for anyone in the building. Architects and specifiers looking for suitable window products would therefore do well to look for a range which can be easily configured and networked to provide ventilation throughout the whole building.Specifying such a ventilation system doesn’t have to be complicated, says GEZE the UK’s leading manufacturer of door and window control systems. The company, which celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2013, has launched a new set of window drives. Providing a flexible, building-specific ventilation solution, the entire range uses state of the art integrated control technology to ensure the products can be networked to extract smoke and heat from a building quickly and easily. Bringing together the best elements from its world-class heat and smoke ventilation range as well as products for natural ventilation, GEZE has created a collection of versatile drives which share a uniform, discreet design and innovative Smartfix installation system, making installation easier. Architects can choose from GEZE’s attractive Slimchain, mighty Powerchain, simple ECchain, the integrated E 920-E 990 chain drive and the compact E 250 NT spindle drive, safe in the knowledge that they will complement each other and integrate easily into the overall building management system. GEZE UK managing director Kaz Spiewakowski said: “This is the range that UK architects and specifiers have been asking for: industry leading, aesthetically pleasing drives that can be packaged together to suit each individual building’s requirements. Not only will each chosen set of drives be easy to install and network, but it also means that as the building use changes, the opening widths and opening speeds of all the windows can be easily adjusted. Our technical team are on hand to provide expert advice and guidance during the specification process and our WinCalc program makes designing window systems even easier.” GEZE UK provides a RIBA approved CPD seminar which gives an overview of the requirements for selection and specification of fire and smoke venting equipment in residential and commercial properties. www.geze.co.uk

Creating buildings using green oak frames delivers a superb result but, with today’s Part L demanding super-insulation levels, the timber’s gradual drying process will lead to serious headaches without the right window design and installation. Traditional exposed frame glazing, where a sealed unit is mounted between two beads fixed between the posts and studs of the frame - with the glass siliconed into position, simply isn’t suitable due to the movement of the building’s green oak structure.

Green oak is newly felled timber which has a high moisture content and takes up to five years to dry out. During this time, the cut timbers will shrink so any structure created using green oak will naturally experience movement.

This can cause problems for ordinarily fixed elements such as windows. Movement stresses on the window

frame will lead to water ingress around the windows, draughts and heat loss – the last things any occupier of a green oak building would expect given the price premium they would have agreed to at the design and commissioning stage.

The solution comes with a combination of improved face applied glazing design and carefully controlling the building drying process using the right glass specification. It has been developed by specialist carpenter Black Pig Frame Finishing who have now worked on more than 300 buildings across the UK. Its innovative way to attach thermally superior, weather-tight windows in green oak buildings uses SGG COOL-LITE SKN 174 glass from GLASSOLUTIONS to help manage the drying process of green oak buildings with great success – successfully eliminating problems including water ingress, heat loss caused by draughts and unsightly cracking around windows. Black Pig’s face applied glazing solution

involves cladding the entire structural glazing frame to offer protection and provide a continuous waterproof seal. Sealed units then ‘float’ to allow for movement of the frame and all weather seals are EPDM rubber to provide longevity. No silicone or other mastics, which are prone to degradation, are used and drainage is built into the system to extend the life of the sealed units.

Manufacturer of the sealed units GLASSOLUTIONS, ensures Black Pig can balance thermal performance with solar control and help green oak building architects manage the drying process over time. It manufactures sealed units with a Swisspacer spacer bar and argon-fill using SGG COOL-LITE SKN 174. This delivers a sealed unit with high light transmission and a very low g-value, which reduces solar gain by as much as 30% compared to standard thermally insulating glass. Importantly, this is combined with an excellent U-value of 1.1W/m2K and a high degree of neutrality both in transmission and exterior reflection.

Simon Ely, MD of Black Pig Frame Finishing, said: “Green timber buildings are extremely popular amongst architects and clients looking for a modern style of building based upon traditional craft skills with inherent ecological credentials. But the natural drying process of the timbers requires careful attention to the glazing otherwise the building will suffer fundamental problems which could prove costly to rectify.”

Architect Alistair Ellen has worked on numerous green oak buildings and believes that Black Pig’s solution is highly effective in achieving the best glazing result. Alistair said: “The use of glazing is always the most dramatic way of bringing an oak framed structure to life and having worked with Black Pig on a number of successful projects the confidence I have in their system and workmanship gives me the freedom to design ever more exciting, light-filled spaces, seamlessly combining oak frame and glass.” www.blackpig.me

St Pancras Chambers have enjoyed extensive restoration work, with London & Continental Railways working with Manhattan Loft Corporation to turn the once-derelict hotel into a 5 star Renaissance Marriott hotel with 244 bedrooms, 2 restaurants, 2 bars, a health and leisure centre, a ballroom, 20 meeting and function rooms, and 67 private apartments and penthouses.

During this restoration work a particular problem was identified that required an innovative solution. Many original lath and plaster ceilings required upgrading to a 60-minute fire rating. These ceilings often included ornate plaster castings dating back to the original construction period and were therefore protected under the Grade 1 rating. These ceilings were also unique in their construction.

The laths were fixed to a complex steel beam sections suspended from the concrete floor above, so whatever fire protection was to be used it not only needed to be light in weight but also able to offer an insulation barrier that would prevent these metal beams from buckling in heat, which would inevitably cause the ceiling to collapse.

Fire prevention Products London, were approached and after an extensive survey developed a solution perfect for the job. The Envirograf EP/CP coating was specified. EP/CP is an intumescent coating that expands in a fire offering an excellent insulation quality to the substrate structure above.

However, due to the importance of the building project and the sensitivity of the original features a test was commissioned. The test house built an exact simulation of the complex ceiling steel structure that also comprised of the lath system.

Carried out at Warrington Test House according to the principles of BS 476:Part 20:1987 the test was a total success achieving the 60 minute requirement leading to the Envirograf EP/CP being specified and now used throughout the St Pancras Chambers project playing a crucial role in restoring the original magnificence of one of London’s most important buildings! www.envirograf.com

TVS SPORTEC indoor sports surface finishes, whether made from black recycled rubber crumbs blended with coloured EPDM granules (SPORTEC Color and SPORTEC Purcolor) or single colour pure EPDM rubber (SPORTEC UNI classic), are rugged, slip-resistant and resilient floor surfaces. They are used in a broad spectrum of applications including aerobics and exercise floors, highly durable floors for offices and commercial rooms as well as multipurpose surfaces used for sports and other activities.

TVS SPORTEC Style safety tiles are designed specifically for free-weights areas. These robust tiles, fixed together with connector pins, protect the subfloor from damage by falling heavy objects. Even if not themselves damaged by falling weights, conventional floor surfaces transmit impact shock, which often results in damage to the concrete subfloor. TVS Sportec Style avoids this deep-impact damage while providing outstanding sound deadening as well.

TVS PU systems provide a seamless sports flooring offering maximum slip and wear resistance, line marking and logos and a surface that is water proof and easy to clean. The integrated resilient underlays in the system provide optimum ball bounce as well as impact protection for the joints. This makes this system

ideal for multi-purpose sports halls, basketball courts, badminton courts, gymnasiums etc.

SPORTEC® floor coverings made from top-quality recycled rubber tyre and EPDM colour granules are extremely sturdy, easy to clean and water-repellent. As they are very comfortable to walk on and absorb footfall and room noise, Sportec® floor coverings are the ideal solution for a wide range of applications in commercial and residential buildings. www.floors4gyms.com

staiNless steel rooFiNG – Fast ForwarD to the FutureAperam Uginox FME and Ugitop stainless steel systems have been used in Brownhill Hayward Brown’s design for the £5m restoration of Grade II listed St Barnabas Church, Erdington. They specified a standing seam system across the entire span as Uginox takes on the matt grey appearance and traditional aesthetic of aged lead. The product is used principally as an alternative to lead, with demand having increased since publication by English Heritage of its Guidance Note on the subject. The restoration was completed five years after an arson attack which virtually destroyed the building and as the church comes into view for the first time, it is the sweeping stainless steel roof that takes the eye. It has been used to extend the original roofline, ‘fusing’ a modern extension with the extensively restored Victorian structure to incorporate a glass fronted cafeteria. This has encouraged greater day to day use of the church, bringing a contemporary appeal to the busy high street. The briefing and design process to repair, extend and refurbish St. Barnabas was protracted. The ultimate philosophy was to repair to best conservation practice where at all possible but to replace in the spirit of the 21st century elements damaged beyond repair. The use of stainless steel for the roof has a number of benefits, not least that most, when asked, do not know the difference. From a practical perspective, however, it is far lighter in weight, completely corrosion resistant and presents theft risk. www.aperam.com

RIEFA is a development of an insulation product made by Riefa Fornatec, based in Reitburg, Germany. The mission of the company was produce a hi-tech yet sustainable insulation product, initially for the sound proofing of doors. Continued research and development led the company to manufacture granular formats for loft insulation and cavity fill, and has further developed into the production of wall insulation batts. The RIEFA boards are made from a mixture of tree bark, rye flour and other materials which are understandably kept a closely guarded secret, and the key to the efficiency of the product is the production process and mixture ratio of it’s ingredients. The raw materials are sourced from sustainable suppliers across Europe, and are then processed at the factory. The insulation boards are of 40mm thickness, and for installation in harsh environments, a staggered layer of 18mm boards is required. Riefa roof boards are 100% organic, low in profile, 36 mm, light in weight - 36kgs per m2 when fully saturated, including the sedum layer. Riefa is ideal for retro fitting due to it’s weight and low profile advantages. Due to the lightness of the boards the installation time is extremely quick and can be undertaken by one person. Incorporation of a metal mesh provides the perfect combination of flexibility and rigidity needed for vertical applications such as chasing into mortar on chimneys. Easy-Form Plus can be stretched by up to 30% without use of a lead forming tool or detriment to its smooth, lightly ribbed surface appearance. This makes life far easier when forming around heavily profiled tiles such as a Double Roman or Bold Roll. Unlike some lead substitutes, Easy-Form Plus has a strong butyl adhesive backing which retains its high bond strength and enables the material to be used on most dry surfaces without a primer. At the £8.5 million refurbishment of an ageing multi-storey building into a new John Lewis department store, Carea Ardal cladding has been specified to create the building’s new eye catching, decorative façade. Refurbished by Midas Interiors and with Glenn Howell Architects undertaking the role of shell and core architects, the project has seen the transformation of a 1960s retail store into one fit for the 21st century.

At less than half the size of an average full line John Lewis department store, the 65,000 sq ft branch in Exeter is the first of a new range of ‘flexible format’ branches the company plans to open across the UK. Originally concrete clad and comprising two eight storey towers, Glenn Howells Architects was appointed to create a stylish and contemporary exterior.

A connecting four storey extension was created which was clad in glass and a permanent ceramic artwork. To complement the modern aesthetic, high quality cladding was required for the existing towers – with Carea’s Ardal range offering the perfect solution. For the building’s larger tower, Ardal rain screen cladding was specified in a speckled Névé finish to create an attractive appearance of stone and curtain walling. This was complemented by silver anodised aluminium vertical feature caps.

The smaller tower was also transformed by Ardal cladding, specified in a ‘Basalte’ finish and framed by a stack bonded brickwork surround. Carea panels are available in over 30 different shades and a range of textures, in a variety of panel sizes, and matched by a selection of comprehensive joints and fittings. Providing excellent thermal efficiency and eliminating cold bridging – as well as comprising around 95% natural minerals – they are a highly sustainable choice.

Installation is quick and simple with the Carea facade system, as each panel is supplied with specialised horizontal rails that fit onto vertical cladding supports. With precisely routed grooves on the top and bottom, the simple fix provides a totally seamless finish to maintain the stunning appearance of the project. Once installed, Carea’s panels will provide the client, staff and customers with a wide range of benefits including excellent thermal efficiency and the elimination of cold bridging.

As well as outstanding thermal performance, the system offers exceptional acoustic and aesthetic performance, can be easily cleaned and requires minimal maintenance – offering an economical cladding solution that will look good for years.

For more than 30 years, Carea has been providing industry leading know-how and product expertise to cladding projects all over Europe. Now open to the public and welcoming thousands of customers through its doors every week, the stylish and carefully designed department store offers the highest standards of aesthetics on the outside too – thanks to the Ardal cladding system from Carea. www.carea.uk.com

Foremans Relocatable Building Systems, the UK’s largest supplier of refurbished Portakabin buildings, has handed over its fifth building to Tata Steel in Scunthorpe – a new project office for a major redevelopment on the integrated steelmaking site.

This latest scheme, which is sustainably constructed from recycled and refurbished steel-framed building modules, will accommodate around 60 project engineers who were previously working from a number of locations across the Scunthorpe site which spans 27

square miles. Foremans has already delivered three office buildings and a canteen on the same site. The three-storey building, now known as ‘The Palace’ by Tata Steel staff, provides open plan offices and conference, induction and meeting rooms, as well as shower and toilet facilities. Foremans supplied the building around 70 per cent complete, with doors,

windows, partitions, flooring, plumbing and electrics all pre-installed to reduce disruption to Tata Steel’s day-to-day operations. Data communications, fire and security systems were also installed by Foremans.

Commenting on the project, David Norris, Project Manager at Tata Steel, said “We looked at new manufacture and traditional brick build at the start of this project, but a refurbished Portakabin building gave us the benefit of significant savings in both cost and programme. We were also impressed that the building structure has a 60-year design life.”

“We were very pleased with the level of service we received from Foremans and their performance throughout. This is an excellent building delivered within our cost constraints and it looks brand new – you would never know its structure is recycled. We have used Foremans buildings previously on this site – and will be issuing a commendation via our purchasing department for their team’s performance on this project.”

Tata Steel is one of the world’s largest producers of steel, with operations in 26 countries. Scunthorpe is home to its Long Products UK Hub. Steel manufactured in Scunthorpe has been used in a wide range of applications from the construction of the Petronas Towers in Malaysia, the T’sing Ma bridge in Hong Kong, Heathrow Terminal 5 and the new Wembley Stadium, to simple everyday objects such as paperclips and light bulbs.

The use of recycled Portakabin buildings is one of the most environmentally sound methods of construction. It generates less than 10 per cent of the carbon emissions and uses less than 3 per cent of the energy during construction, compared to a newly manufactured building of equivalent size (source: MPBA/Arup). Other benefits include programme times reduced by up to 70 per cent, reduced cost, and the buildings can be easily expanded, reconfigured or removed if an organisation’s requirements change. www.foremansbuildings.info

A new two-storey teaching block for an expanding Leicestershire school completed by off-site construction specialist, Yorkon, a member of the Portakabin Group, has been described as an ‘iconic building’. One of the highest-performing state schools in Leicestershire, Martin High School in Anstey, is expanding from a middle school for 11-14 year olds to

a secondary school, catering for 11-16 year olds. A new building was then needed to accommodate 50 per cent more pupils over the next two years.

The new facility provides eight classrooms and 12 toilets. The Yorkon pre-installed high performance concrete floor has been used to deliver superior acoustics and a robust finish for a demanding secondary school

environment. Full height curtain walling to the entrance has created an impressive exterior and a combination of spandrel panels between floors, brickwork and cedar cladding give the scheme a distinctive and contemporary appearance. Off-site construction allowed the building to be delivered with much less disruption than a site-based solution and the modules were installed over a weekend.

Martin High School’s Business Manager, Sue Plunkett, said, “There were a number of benefits to working with Yorkon, including the speed of construction and low level of disruption to a busy school environment. The finished building feels more like a traditional construction rather than a facility built off site and we would be very happy to work with Yorkon again in the future.”

“This was a new venture for the school and we have been very pleased with both the finished result and the construction process. The building is designed to make the most of the fantastic views from the windows of the nearby beauty spot, Bradgate Park. The design of the cladding blends in well with the countryside and we have created a truly iconic building for the school.”

Yorkon has an extensive track record in the primary and secondary education sectors, having completed a wide variety of bespoke modular projects including self-contained teaching buildings, classroom extensions and complete schools, delivering all the speed, quality, sustainability and efficiency benefits of off-site construction.

Following completion of this project on time and on budget, Yorkon has since been awarded its fourth academy project in the Midlands – a two-storey sixth form centre at Woodbrook Vale High School in Loughborough. www.yorkon.info

Kemper System Takes Centre Stage At The National TheatreAs the National Theatre prepares to raise the curtain on its 50th anniversary season, Kemper System has ensured that its’ Grade II listed building continues to perform by providing the waterproofing membrane for a major refurbishment project.

Famously described by Prince Charles as a ‘clever way of building a nuclear power station in the middle of London without anyone objecting’, the National Theatre is almost as famous for its architecture as it is for the quality of the productions it stages. Located on the South Bank of the Thames, it’s a pretty hard building to overlook, whatever your opinion of its modern concrete structure, and has been Grade II listed since 1994. For the team that manages the building, therefore, there is a significant responsibility to maintain the structure as a piece of national heritage, a public building and a busy workplace.

Page 45: The Essential Building Product Review - Issue 4 October-November 2013

GALLERY/EBPR 45

Operational RequirementsOne of the architectural features that make the National Theatre such an unconventional design are the distinctive terraced balconies that form its rectangular concrete silhouette. These provide both public walkways and roofs for offices below so when their original asphalt surfaces started failing, resulting in leaks, a solution needed to be found quickly. The re-waterproofing was carried out as part of the National Theatre’s £80 million refurbishment programme but one of the main specification criteria was finding a way to complete the works without any business interruption implications and specialist contractor Cobsen-Davies was brought in to advise on the best approach.

Explains Tony Ward from Cobsen-Davies London Ltd: “While the existing substrate was asphalt, the use of hot works to replace the roof/walkway surface was out of the question as the building had to remain operational. Stripping out the existing substrate was also something we wanted to avoid as this would prolong the programme and generate waste, which adds to costs and creates logistical problems in such a central London location. A cold liquid-applied waterproofing membrane was clearly the most appropriate solution as this could be applied to the existing roof substrate on a section by section basis, ensuring that only small sections of the surface needed to be inaccessible at any given time.”

Business as UsualTo enhance the ‘business as usual’ specification still further, Tony Ward recommended Kemperol 2K-PUR from Kemper System, a solvent-free cold liquid-applied waterproofing membrane that is often specified for occupied buildings thanks to its odour-free characteristics.

Stuart Hicks from Kemper System comments: “While a roof refurbishment does not always impact on staff even in an occupied building, the design of the National Theatre building meant that the re-surfacing work was taking place both above and below the office and workshop windows and near public access areas. A solvent-free product like Kemperol 2K-PUR was, therefore, a big advantage as this could be installed on top of the existing substrate in a single process without any nuisance odours, while providing a high level of performance and a BBA certified service life in excess of 25 years.”

Strength & FlexibilityThe resurfacing work took place on the 4th and 5th floor terraces and inner quadrangle at the National Theatre, with Cobsen-Davies working on small sections of the affected area at a time so that access to all office and workshops could be maintained throughout the works.

The installation team carried out minor repairs and preparation of the existing substrate to ensure a clean and even surface before beginning application of the Kemperol 2K-PUR system with Kemper System’s Kempertec primer. Once the primer had been allowed to cure, the Kemperol 2K-PUR solvent-free resin was applied to each surface. The Kemperol resin saturates a non-woven reinforcement fleece that is extremely tough and tear resistant. It cures to form a totally seamless monolithic membrane that is UV stable and permanently elastic with a direct bond to the substrate.

For some sections of the walkways, Cobsen-Davies London Ltd applied Kemper System’s Kemperdur Quartz Coating, a light-stable and slip-resistant protective coating that provides both an anti-slip surface and a coloured area to demarcate the designated walkway.

Kieron Lillis, head of engineering at the National Theatre adds: “The solvent-free approach was ideal for us as it meant that we could factor in our business as usual requirements and our sustainability goals while still addressing the long-term needs of maintaining the building. The use of the quartz coating also meant that we could enhance health and safety on the walkways in a single scheme, improving rather than simply repairing the structure.”

In 1840 Daniel Gooch, the newly-appointed 21 year old locomotive superintendent of the Great Western Railway wrote to Isambard Kingdom Brunel recommending Swindon as the location for a much needed engine works.

In his letter he recommended that the then tiny hilltop town was the perfect location with “the great advantage of being on the side of a canal communicating with the whole of England, and by which we could get coal and coke”. He went on to say that collection of water might be a problem but “we have a great deal of side cutting that might be converted

into reservoirs, and should even this fail us we have the canal”. And so, just four years later, the GWR Central Engine Station was a reality.

The site was subsequently extended with the provision of a three-storey building in the 1870’s to provide general office accommodation and airy light-filled drawing offices. In 1903 an additional storey was added in order to provide extra office space. Having ceased operating as an Engine Station this section of the building was acquired by English Heritage in 1992 to house the organisation’s extensive archives.

As part of the 1992 interior refurbishment to this Grade II* Listed building Selectaglaze, the UK’s leading designer, manufacture and installer of secondary glazing treated windows on the south elevation in order to improve noise insulation from the railway lines.

Recent rationalisation of English Heritage’s office space around the UK has resulted in an increased number of the organisation’s responsibilities being delivered from The Engine House by over 500 members of staff. This now includes a public access library, dark rooms, photographic conservation laboratories and meeting rooms.

To facilitate these extra areas of responsibility the building required further renovation and conversion works which were put out to Public Tender. This included the requirement for “The thermal upgrading of windows by installation of secondary glazing units and draught proofing of windows” to specifications prepared by Oxley Conservation, an historic buildings consultancy. The successful applicant for the secondary glazing element was, again, Royal Warrant Holder, Selectaglaze.

A total of 100 sash windows of different sizes were treated using the slim profile Series 20 system for smaller windows and the heavy duty Series 90 range for ‘monumental’ style sash windows some with curved heads. Low emissivity glass was incorporated throughout to optimise the thermal performance.

Each window was individually measured and a bespoke frame made that fitted precisely to ensure a good seal. The windows arrived fully fabricated and were installed quickly and with minimum disruption to the fully functioning office. Selectaglaze, founded in 1966 and a Royal Warrant holder since 2004, works with a very wide range of clients and has developed particular expertise in the treatment of period buildings.

The company provides an extensive range of literature and guidance notes covering acoustics, thermal performance and security and also offers a technical advisory service and a RIBA approved CPD Seminar for professional designers. www.selectaglaze.co.uk

hauratoN DraiNaGe at hesliNGtoN east campus, uNiversity oF yorKThe new £750 million, 65 hectare Heslington East Campus is now well underway with phases 1 and 2 already commissioned, although it will be 2020 before the approved Master Plan nears completion. The new buildings on the East Campus are designed in clusters, each cluster being separated from the next with a sensitively designed landscaped green space. With the East Campus site being quite flat, deep drains were not possible so rainwater from roofs, road and pathways had to be directed in a series of culverts, surface drainage channels and rills, eventually discharging into a lake. The Sustainable Urban Drainage Scheme included the control of rainwater from roofs via downpipes into a series of buried, stepped shallow culverts made from two sizes of FASERFIX® SUPER channel fitted with solid ductile iron covers. Surface water drainage with ductile iron gratings were provided in the same channel runs where channels crossed paved footpaths or asphalted areas. Pairs of FASERFIX® SUPER 300 channels fitted with solid covers were also installed adjacent to each other in the rills to create tunnels under roadways and paths. RECYFIX® SLOTTED channels with their unobtrusive galvanised slot inlets were specified for the pedestrian routes and concourses. Colin Taff, Hauraton‘s Project Engineer comments about the project, “There have been over 1600 metres of Hauraton drainage channel installed so far in this project by Howard Civil Engineering Limited. They were please to report no breakages of Hauraton components, even during necessary mitring and hole cutting in the FASERFIX® channels”. For full Case Study go to www.hauraton.co.uk

Thule Air Base in Greenland, the US Armed Forces’ northernmost location, has some of the most extreme weather in the world. Temperatures down to -60oF are commonplace, and the world’s second highest wind speed of 207 miles per hour was measured on the base. Despite these challenging conditions, standard SiPass Entro access control products from Siemens have been in use at the base for more than 10 years. They have proven to be so dependable that the installation has been extended over the years from originally one to approximately 380 doors.Thule Air Base is home to several US military groups, including the 12th Space Warning Squadron that operates a Ballistic Missile Early Warning System designed to detect and track intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) launched against North America. Around 150 members of the US Armed Forces and 450 Danish support personnel live on the base, with the non-military facilities for this small “city” being operated and maintained by a Danish company, Greenland Contractors. Despite the remote location of the base, security of even the non-military buildings is an important issue. Access control for these buildings was originally provided using ordinary key locks and digital locks. However, around ten years ago, the decision was made to move to an electronic access control system which would make access management easier and give much greater flexibility.Finding a suitable system was not easy, however. Since many of the card readers would need to be installed outside, they would not only have to withstand the harsh arctic weather, but also operate reliably in the worst weather conditions to ensure that personnel is never stranded outside. In addition, the system would have to cope with high levels of static electricity resulting from the very dry air at the base.

After carefully evaluating the available options, Greenland Contractors decided to install a system using products from the SiPass Entro range, not only because they operate dependably in harsh environments – it has even been suggested that the vandal-proof card readers used in outdoor locations could resist polar bear attacks – but also because the system combined flexibility and scalability with ease of use and excellent value for money. The original Siemens installation covered 280 doors in 36 buildings, including doors giving access to accommodation areas, leisure facilities and dining areas. Centralized control was provided by four computers in the base’s Hilltop security facility. Additionally, provisions were made for base technicians to plug a portable PC directly into the segment controllers in each building to help with error diagnosis and maintenance. In addition to the standard access control functions, which include an anti-pass-back feature to prevent double access, the installation was configured to provide a booking system for the solarium, which is very popular during the three months of the year when the sun is permanently below the horizon. Those wishing to use the solarium log into the SiPass Entro system’s website to make a reservation. When they arrive at the solarium, they use their access control card to “turn on the sun.” If they show up at the wrong time or without a reservation, however, the system ensures that they get no sun. Provisions are also made for unlocking and locking doors remotely from the Hilltop central control station to ensure that personnel who forget their cards can get into the buildings to escape the sub-zero temperatures prevalent at the base. Additionally, the system offers a person count facility that can be used to ensure that all persons are safely indoors when a bad weather alert is in force. When the decision was made to enlarge the living quarters on the base, Greenland Contractors looked carefully at the best way to expand the access control system in order to cover an additional 99 doors. Once again, the company decided to use SiPass Entro because the original installation had performed flawlessly for a decade. An important additional benefit was that today’s Siemens products retain full backwards compatibility although the products in the range have evolved greatly since their initial installation at the base. This makes it easy to integrate the new and existing modules of the installation and to provide unified management for the entire system. www.siemens.co.uk/securityproducts

The future of Great Yarmouth’s Vauxhall Bridge looks bright thanks to the installation of DeckSafe Solution’s GRP safety flooring during its recent comprehensive restoration. Opened in 1852, the Grade 2-listed cast iron

bridge was then modified in 1886 to take railway locomotives, at which time the present footbridge was also added. This modification means that, today, Vauxhall Bridge is the only surviving major bridge in the country to have been strengthened in the 19th century by complete alteration of its structural form. However, since its closure to vehicle traffic in 1953, the bridge had slowly fallen into disrepair, prompting a successful application in March 2011 for funding to undertake the restoration. On site work began in November 2012 and DeckSafe Solutions was commissioned to provide GRP safety flooring for the pedestrian access areas of the bridge. Manufactured to meet BS EN124 specifications and providing superior grip in wet, oily and icy conditions, DeckSafe’s GRP panels are ideal for applications such as this. The high strength properties and lightweight construction of the 50mm cored GRP panels, which were used throughout the restoration, provide a fantastic load strength of 16.7 tonnes

per square metre. This unique combination of features and benefits within an advanced composite material means that GRP flooring is fast becoming the first choice for a multitude of demanding applications and environments. www.deck-safe.co.uk

eNGiNeeriNG Depth Gives Brett laNDscapiNG the eDGe iN hull housiNG proJectLeading paving supplier Brett Landscaping has been selected to provide permeable paving for driveways and carriageways across a significant and much anticipated social housing project in Kingston-Upon-Hull – an area where the use of building materials that support flood prevention is critical. The new development at Riverside, North Bransholme comprises 43 properties on reclaimed land for social rent. Commissioned by Riverside Housing Association, the complex project united the Homes and Communities Agency with Hull City Council, primary contractor Mansell Construction and engineers Curtins Consulting Ltd. Given the high risk of flooding, the development required an appropriate solution that would fulfil the drainage needs of the area and meet with the approval of project engineers, Curtins Leeds, as well as the development control division of Hull Council. Mansell Construction spoke to two paving suppliers and was given two very different options. Where one company proposed an immediate solution, Brett Landscaping advised that compliance with Interpave and British Standard regulations necessitated a full engineering assessment. This was conducted utilising the company’s PermCalc permeable pavement design tool to provide the optimum design based upon detailed data on the composition of the ground. Having worked with Brett on a number of projects in the past, Rick Shepherd, Project Manager at Mansell, supported the latter view and specified Brett Landscaping.PermCalc is Brett Landscaping’s integrated design and costing software for permeable paving, which analyses the proposed site based on structural and hydraulic data including average rainfall, the type of vehicle load the paving must withstand and any known pollutants that will impact upon water quality. As a result, Brett was able to provide Mansell with a detailed breakdown of the project’s paving requirements, as well as costed recommendations. Brett has supplied permeable Omega Flow paving in two variants. The central paving areas have been supplied in 80mm Brindle blocks, while borders are specified in 60mm Charcoal. This design ensures that surface water run-off is directed towards the paving that offers greater permeability, as well as providing visual contrast to enhance the overall aesthetics of the development. www.brettpaving.co.uk

When operating in ‘natural environmental ventilation’ mode temperatures are monitored by ceiling mounted sensors in each lobby served by the smoke shafts. If the temperature exceeds a pre-determined set point a roof mounted environmental ventilation fan is activated, which vents the warm air and replaces it with cooler air from outside. www.secontrols.com

Extreme abrasion and shock resistance, plus chemical attack, were qualities demanded of both the interior and exterior concrete floor slabs at the new recycling and waste transfer station, at Lower House Farm in North Warwickshire. To fulfil this requirement, Sika Limited supplied Sika concrete admixtures, microsilica slurry and Bekaert steel fibres to be incorporated in the concrete mix supplied by Tarmac Concrete. This combination produced a concrete with ultimate wear, abrasion and impact resistance, providing greater

durability and flexural strength. The internal concrete slabs of the transfer station in particular will face harder wear from skips and heavy vehicles, and because of this, higher performing fibres were used in the mix. www.sikaconcreteadmixtures.co.uk

Hochiki Europe Gets Rave Reviews At The Kenneth More Theatre

Kenneth More was one of the most famous actors of the 1950s and epitomised the ‘stiff upper lip’ British conviviality that we often associate with that era. A contemporary of John Mills, Trevor Howard and Jack Hawkins, at the height of his fame he was nation's most popular film star and took leading roles in a string of box office hits including Doctor in the House, Reach for the Sky, Genevieve, and A Night to Remember.

Prior to his death in 1982 at the age of 67, he was one of the very few performers to have a theatre named after him, after Ilford opened The Kenneth More Theatre at the end of 1974. He made various appearances there, and over the years many other famous stars of stage and screen have also trodden its boards. Today, it hosts a variety of musicals, plays, concerts and pantomimes, and is a focal point

of the local community. Ensuring the safety of visitors is a top priority for the London Borough of Redbridge, which owns and maintains the building.

Having been originally installed in the 1980s, The Kenneth More Theatre’s emergency lighting system was nearing the end of its life and Rob recognised that a new one was needed. After liaising with the London Borough of Redbridge, its long-standing life safety partner, Tann Synchronome, was asked to make its recommendations.

Based in Monmouthshire, close to the Severn Bridge, the Tann Synchronome has a history dating back to the 1800s and currently has a large customer base across the UK, including a wide variety of public sector and blue chip clients. Having assessed what was required it didn’t take Will long to decide that Hochiki Europe’s FIREscape emergency lighting solution

would tick all the boxes. FIREscape is an EN50172 compliant intelligent low voltage system that comprises an addressable emergency lighting control panel with battery back-up, and features addressable, self-contained LED luminaires and signage connected via low voltage (40V) cabling. The luminaires and signage are also equipped with battery back-up, so that they will function in every situation, while the units fit directly onto a standard Hochiki Europe sensor base, making installation simple. Although the wiring also needed replacing, the team from Tann Synchronome was able to use the existing containment and wiring architecture.

As with most entertainment venues, lighting must not detract attention from the performance and the installed FIREscape system has been configured with three modes. The first is an emergency mode, where lights are operated at maximum illumination if there is a power failure. Normal or maintained mode means that it can be used as part of the permanent lighting of the building in five different levels of illumination, to enhance the general ambiance of various areas of the building. Finally, in show mode specific lights are used at a lower level of illumination.

Due to its LED technology, the FIREscape system will also cut battery replacement costs, testing labour, recycling costs and general energy use. LED also has a long life and requires only one per cent of the bulb changes required with traditional lighting. If a luminaire does need replacing, in house personnel can carry out the operation due to extra low voltage at the device, cutting maintenance costs.

Tann Synchronome is currently carrying out a second phase of the project and adding additional luminaires to the system. The final word goes to Rob Mitchell-Gears, who concludes, ‘I’m incredibly impressed that FIREscape was able to address all of our needs and provide The Kenneth More Theatre with an emergency lighting solution that significantly enhances the safety of theatregoers and employees alike.’www.hochikieurope.com
