US Hydro Epoch History Post Cards
O n 16 – 19 March 2015 at National Harbor, MD USA US Hydro 2015 was convened.
US Hydro is a bi-annual conference hosted by The Hydrographic Society of
America (THSOA). THSOA and Canadian Hydro-
graphic Association (CHA) annually alternate the
hosting of the two premier Hydrographic confer-
ences in North America.
This was the first time US Hydro was held in the
National Capital Region. The conference center
was the Gaylord Hotel in National Harbor, MD.
The conference services and site were excellent.
The exhibit hall and technical presentations hall were co-located allowing for maximum
interactions and networking discussions with exhibitors and presenters. An additional
benefit was the close proximity of the piers – which
were about 200 meters from exhibit hall to the boats,
meaning no to and from bus scheduling for on water
demonstrations.
The conference attracted high level keynote speakers
including U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode

Island and head of the Senate Ocean Caucus, Mr. Robert Cardillo, Director of the Na-
tional Geospatial Intelligence Agency (NGA), RADM Gerd Glang, US National Hydrogra-
pher and Director of NOAA Office of Coast Survey, RADM Timothy Gallaudet, Hydrogra-
pher of the Navy and Commander Naval Oceanography and Meteorology Command, and
Mr. Robert Ward, President, Directing Committee, International Hydrographic Bureau
(IHB).
This group of speakers kick started our conference into full speed ahead.
The Opening Ceremony was punctuated by the induction of three renowned Hydrogra-
phers into our Hall of Fame. RADM Chris Andreasen, Mr. Karl Keininger, and Mr. Bill
Bergen were recognized for their outstanding contributions to Hydrography over the
courses of their careers.
Of course a major ingredient to the conference success was our industry exhibitors, sup-
port by government, academia participation, and indi-
vidual attendance.
Our exhibitors
numbered nearly
70 including the
industry leaders in
survey services,
survey software,
and survey hardware. Gov-
ernment, media, and academia also exhibited for the confer-
ence. Our exhibitors also took advantage of the close pier
space to bring 8 survey platforms to the conference. Govern-
ment and industry on water demonstrations showed the lat-
est survey and data collection technology. Taking advantage of all this where our atten-
dees - we had nearly 600 registered which was the most ever for US Hydro.

A new feature to this year’s US Hydro was the addition of a Hydropreneur section. This was to attract new thinkers and ideas into the conference to show their ideas and thinking. We had three Hydropreneurs and hope that we can grow that feature in the coming conferences. The technical sessions remain a great strength of the conference. This year
we had over 50 technical presentations which are posted on our web page
at http://www.thsoa.org. For the second time at US Hydro we organized a
series of 35 Lightning Round Presentations. Lightning Rounds are rapid fire
presentations limited to 5 minutes of automatically advancing slides. They
have proven to be very popular by presenters and audience. They are also
posted on our page.
This year we offered 20 Workshops scheduled within the conference. These included GPS Navigation
by GPS World, Phoenix International presented a workshop on the search for Malaysian Air MH370,
and CARIS presented on S-100 (Universal Hydrographic Data Model) development. The interest and
attendance in the Workshops were high.
Participation by academia is growing at each conference.
THSOA Student Outreach Program brings 24 students to
the conference from around the country. They are
awarded full travel, per diem and conference fees. They
are given a one day class in hydrography, assigned a men-
tor, attend the conference, and ride on the boats for a
full four day experience in hydrography. In addition to our Outreach Stu-
dents we have a student poster session which this year attracted over 30
posters. Industry support this program came from C&C Technologies,
CARIS, David Evans, Esri, eTrac, Fenstermaker, Fugro, JOA Surveys, QPS,
Seahorse Geomatics, TerraSond and Waterway Surveys and Engineering. The posters were judged and $2,500 of prize
money was awarded.
Our US Government participation was excellent. The nation’s main
federal Hydrographic agencies were well represented. NOAA, NGA,
and US Navy were conference partners and the US Army Corps of
Engineers provided a session chair, their survey platform Linthicum
and many attendees. Our government partners provided speakers
for the opening ceremony, exhibits, and had several papers in the
technical sessions.

NOAA had its survey platform BH 2 at the confer-
ence.
The industry sponsors were key to the success of
the conference. Bringing equipment, personnel,
and marketing exhibits is an investment and com-
mitment that we very much appreciated. Their ad-
ditional support ensured that the conference was
of the highest quality and that the Student
Outreach Program achieved the goal of Hydro-
graphic Education. Thanks to Fugro, Esri,
CARIS, IIC Technologies, and HYPACK for the
support that allowed for our socializing at the
end of each day – where not much hydrogra-
phy was done but we did what hydrographers
do all over the world at the ends of their days
and that is Have Fun!
Media coverage and partnering gave us the publicity we needed to spread the word about
the conference, ECO Magazine GPS World, Hydro International, Ocean News and Technol-
ogy, Sea Technology, and xyHt all cooperated with our media campaign.
We had an Accompanying Persons Program which took advantage of the nearby sites of
our Nation’s Capitol. The group went out three days to lunch and tour Mt Vernon, George
Washington’s Plantation, sightsee Washington DC and a tour of the Capitol, and visit Hill-
wood House, the Marjorie Merriweather Post mansion.
This year the conference program including speaker biographies, technical sessions timing
and abstracts, maps, workshops schedules, posters abstracts, and boat demonstration
schedules were published and available on line by the application Guidebook https://
guidebook.com/g/ushydro2015/. We think this was a good alternative to the usual full
color printed schedule. We were able to make necessary changes to the program through-
out the conference. We also provided basic printed schedules for those not able to get to
the application.
Finally, I would like to recognize the work of our organizing committee without whom US
Hydro 2015 would not have happened. Their enthusiasm, dedication, and time often at
their own expense made the conference the success that it became.

Latin America Chapter
It has been approved. Now it’s time to join and to start working.
During the last U.S. HYDRO 2015, held in Washington DC from March 16th to 19th, the creation of the Latin American Chapter was officially announced, becoming the third active chapter in the Hydrographic Soci-ety of America, after the Houston and the recently renamed Southeast chapters.
During the same event, a presentation with a brief description of Hydro-graphy in the Latin-American region was also given, explaining the rea-soning behind the creation of the chapter. This is the first society of this kind. The intention is to integrate more than 500 different organizations or
institutions that are currently working in hydrography within the 30 countries of this region. We are inviting all of them to join this venture and formally be part of the chapter and the Hydrographic Society of America itself.
Toward the end of the conference, we conducted the first working session. We started by establishing the directing board according to the bylaws. (Two HYPACK members are included on this board.) Then, we dedicated ourselves to define a working plan for the upcoming years. The following is a summary of the more relevant topics:
Membership campaign:
An option to sign up for the Latin American Chapter will be incorporated into the Membership Applica-
tion that appears on the web page.
There will be several documents available that explain the creation of the chapter, the reasoning behind it,
and the benefits of becoming a member.
THSOA web page in Spanish.
As it is considered the most important means of communication for the Society and its chapters, it is of great
importance to have a web page in Spanish as soon as possible. Work will be conducted by the Mexican Hy-drographic Office to translate all the text into Spanish and incorporate new content as it is approved by the chapter.
Incorporating GIS tools to identify the distribution of our members and for use as a members Catalog or Di-
rectory. The Catalog will facilitate the visibility of the people dedicated to Hydrography among our countries. It could also be used as a tool for hydrography crowd-sourcing. For this purpose, as soon as a member com-pletes his/ her registration, it will be requested to answer additional questions. Those may help us identify their hydrographic capabilities as an individual or as part of a hydrographic organization.
Internal Organization:
Following IHO guidelines, three permanent coordinators were established:
Capacity Building (Chris Hancock)
Standards (Rafael Ponce)
Links with Other Hydrographic Organizations (Angel Terry) The name in parenthesis shows the coordinator in each case, so if you have any interest in those particular ar-
eas, you can contact them. They won’t be the only ones working on that particular matter, but they will keep

records and will work on organizing and prioritizing our activities in those fields.
Certification Process in Spanish.
We will put a Spanish version of the Hydrographic Certification process in place
that follows the one already being used by the Society. The aim will be to have an accepted Certification process that can be used in all of our countries to help identify those individuals that have enough knowledge to conduct quality hydrographic sur-veys.
Hydro International magazine in Spanish.
We will conduct the steps required to have Hydro International available in Span-
ish. There is an offer from their editors, but they require us to identify the interested audience for such a publication and to ensure that we will have articles with the re-quired quality to be published there in the near future.
To create a network of Universities within the region that are willing to take the
steps necessary to establish a program in Hydrography in the near future.
After identifying the possible members of this network, we will try to focus capac-
ity building initiatives towards those Universities. Through this, we will try to educate instructors in the region and to facilitate resources required by them to teach Hydro-graphy.
Regional and Society Conferences with the Region.
We will be working towards three main events of regional importance, similar to
the one conducted last week in Washington. We will be expanding the capabilities of such events, gaining experience until we will finally be included in the rotation of the Conferences with the USA and Canada. To achieve this goal we have the following plans:
To conduct a First Regional Event in April 2016, as part of the III Mexican Hydro-
graphic Convention to be held in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. The organizers in Mex-ico (some of which are member of this chapter) will generously allow us to: promote the event, (2) have our fist general session, (3) include presentations from our mem-bers, (4) allow company members to request for a booth at the Expo that will be part of the Convention, and in general terms, to be part of all the activities. So, starting now, we want to invite you all to get ready to participate and so set aside time to be part of this important event.
2018 First Independent Regional Event (not part of other event).
2020 First Hydrographic Society of America Event in Latin America.
Locations and other details for those events are already being proposed. We
hope to make a more comprehensive presentation soon to help anyone inter-ested to prepare for such important events.
Those are not all the initiatives included in our first working plan, but they are probably enough to get you motivated to join us. If you are interested in more information regarding this, please to not hesitate to contact me at [email protected] . We are looking forward to hearing from you about these initiatives.

ABOUT THSOA
Membership in THSOA is open to any individual or organization with an interest in surveying
in hydrospace. No formal qualifications are required. THSOA celebrated its' 31-year presence
in the United States on April 1, 2011. Our total membership now stands at 600+.
The mission of THSOA is to promote education in hydrography.
THSOA was incorporated in the State of Maryland (United States) as a non-profit organization
in 1984 and was granted 501(c)(3) status as a non-profit organization by the U.S. Internal
Revenue Service in 1985.
Individual Members of THSOA are eligible for membership in local chapters, and receive a
discount on registration at THSOA sponsored events as well as some international conferences.
Chapters have been formed in Houston, Louisiana, West Coast (Alaska, Washington, Oregon,
and California), and now Latin America.
Members also receive Hydro International (HI) Magazine which is published six times a
year plus a buyers guide. THSOA ensures that your address is current and takes care of the
periodic process of BPA subscription certification.
On odd numbered years THSOA hosts the U.S Hydrographic Conference which alternates with
the Canadian Hydrographic Conference (held on even years). THSOA was the co-organizer,
with NOAA's Office of Coast Survey of the original US Hydro Conferences which were held
from 1984-1994. In 1999 THSOA organized the "reborn" US Hydro event.
In recent years we have worked very hard to strengthen our already strong ties with the Cana-
dian Hydrographic Association (CHA; See also Links and References). We now offer a recip-
rocal arrangement on Exhibiting and Registration fees for our respective annual conferences.
THSOA Corporate Members receive the same benefits as Individual Members plus a hot link
on the Corporate Member page. Corporate membership includes two Individual Member-
ships. For the biennial U.S. Hydro Conference they receive a discount on exhibit space and
may register any three employees of the organization at the member rate.
Only Corporate Members and Government Agencies may place Employment Opportunity
advertisements (no charge).
All memberships begin on entry and are renewed on January 1. Dues are not prorated. Persons
joining after October 1 will receive the remainder of the present year plus all of the next.
THSOA is staffed by volunteers; we have no paid staff.
