In 1869 - almost 150 years ago - eight faithful, hopeful, and loving women first organized in Boston in response to non-existent education for girls and a lack of women’s health care in India. They raised funds to send Isabella Thoburn, an educator, and Dr. Clara Swain, a doctor, to India. These women saw a need, stepped out in faith, and made things happen. Isabella Thoburn’s school for girls grew into Isabella Thoburn College in Lucknow, India, the first women’s college in Asia. And, Dr. Clara Swain established the first women’s hospital in Asia. It bears her name. Both of these institutions are still operating today! 148 years later. United Methodist Women, wherever it goes, leaves a lasting legacy of faith, hope, and love. The Forward in Faith (FIF) team continues to meet and explore ways to reignite St. Luke’s passion for serving our community and sharing the love of Christ with our neighbors. Already, changes to our Children’s and Youth evening activities have led to increased attendance and rave reviews from both children and par-ents. Two Food Truck nights have shone a light on our welcoming presence in the neighborhood. Special music programs have led new people to St. Luke’s for wor-ship through beautiful music of all kinds. Recent efforts of the FIF team include a new way of gathering member and visi-tor information, which will help us learn how both members and visitors want to be involved here. A closed-circuit television system will feature highlights of our min-

istries and give viewers details of coming events, activities, and services. We will be “walking the neighborhood” in a few weeks to share St. Luke’s with surrounding areas by distributing an invitation to our many upcoming events during the Lenten and Easter season. Although not technically a FIF event, a work day is planned to tackle projects that will have our campus “shining like a bright new penny”!In our continuing efforts, we want to talk to leaders in the church about existing programs and ministries, and how we can make those the BEST that they can be. If you lead one of our ministries, we will be asking you to prayerfully and thoroughly examine it with your team. How could it reach more people or run more smoothly? What is your vision for this ministry? Be creative, think outside the box. What do you need to reach those goals? While St. Luke’s has a long history of successful programs, many have not changed in significant measure in some time. No matter how successful we believe a program or ministry is, there is always room for improve-ment. Let’s Shake It Up and explore how much better we can be! Change is hard. But it is absolutely necessary for St. Luke’s and, indeed, for everyone, everywhere. This quote from John F. Kennedy sums it up: Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future. Please join us in being part of the change that shows our St. Luke’s neighbors the enduring love of Christ and the joy of fellowship in his name. Cathy Bowsher

WE NEED YOUOur neighbors need to know that we are here!

How do we do that? We don’t just stand on the front steps and yell out “Y’all come” or just put out flyers on the church grounds. We have to have people out in our neighborhoods making connections and letting people know that St. Luke’s is an open, inviting place for everyone.

You can help on April 1 by placing door hangers on the doors of houses in the neighborhoods around the church. If you live in one of the apartment buildings close by - you can put door

hangers on the doors on your hallway or invite the people in your dining room. That is how we can let people know that the love of Jesus Christ is alive at St. Luke’s.

Volunteer sign up sheets are on the Hospitality Hall desk or email [email protected].

We also have volunteer opportunities for you to help spruce up and clean up around the church to get ready for our Easter Guests.

We need a minimum of 10 volunteers to walk and as many as able to work around the church. Please sign up at the Hospitality Desk so we can plan the day accordingly. You don’t have to

stay for the entire day - come walk or work whenever you can.

LAKESHORE CAMPERSHIPSMany lives have been changed by a trip to camp, but the cost of going to camp can be quite a burden. For some families,

the cost of camp makes it an experience that is out of reach. St. Luke's has helped many go to camp over the years. If you are able to help in any way, please bring gifts to Vickey. Envelopes are available in Hospitality Hall.If you are in need of assistance with the cost of camp, please fill out a Campership Application online: stlukesumc.org/ministries/youth/ or pick-up one in Hospitality Hall and turn it into Beth or Megan. The deadline for request is April 2.

YOUNG ADULT DINNERSDid you know that our Young Adult Group meets almost every Thursday night at 6 for dinner and a devotional time together? Would you be willing to help with dinner on a Thursday night? We need dinners to feed 10-12 hungry Young Adults. They can be delivered hot and ready or I can receive a frozen casserole to heat up for them! If you can help, give me a call and I will let you know what dates we have open this Spring. THANK YOU! -Beth Ryan

CONGRATULATIONS to Katie Taylor for being named a Resident Counselor at Lakeshore UMA this summer!

A Note From our Children’s Ministry DirectorWhen I began working as the Director of Children’s Minis-tries in September 2015, I received a copy of a children’s ministry directory. The directory contained the names of children nursery age through 5th grade totaling 49 children. Some of those children have since been promoted to youth, some have moved away, and there are children listed who I’ve been unable to meet. All the children listed receive birthday and Christmas cards, their parents receive emailed Children’s newsletters and emails regarding children-relat-ed activities. Since starting, I’ve noticed that while there are many regular attendees to Sunday School, there are many who infrequently or no longer attend.I bring this up for a the following reasons:1. We have a thriving day school and after school program that brings in 150 children daily to our campus. While that is encouraging and a cause for praise, it can be misleading to our church members that associate their presence with Sunday attendance. I sent a survey to Day School families asking whether they had a church home and all but one of the total respondents has a church home with which they are strongly connected. This isn’t to say that St. Luke’s isn’t a vital part of their lives, but Sunday mornings, they currently choose to attend elsewhere. The benefit is that we’re continuing to develop and nurture relationships with these families.2. Children’s Council has met and is aggressively exploring ways to grow. We collectively see a gradual decline in Sunday School attendance and we’d like to uncover the root causes and ways we can bring families in and meaningfully con-nect them in worship, service, and spiritual growth. We need families with young children and youth. Our children’s program needs to be one in which people feel drawn to this church in particular and it needs to show that we at St. Luke’s are inten-tional at meeting the needs of young families.3. We’ve seen creative and outside-the-box thinking work with Wednesday night children activities. As I wrote about in a previous Epistle article, Wednesday nights were not working for children and families. We sought feedback from parents and prayerfully switched our programming to Sunday nights and now we have 18 kids (previous average on Wed. nights was 3) attending from the Challengers, Cub Scouts, neighborhood, and church. And while the number may be important, what matters is that these children are engaged in Christian fellowship with one another, they’re learning Bible stories and engaging in activities that rein-force Biblical lessons, and we’re using the gifts and pas-sions of our church members to make it happen.4. Exciting developments are coming in children’s ministry! With feedback from parents, with continued prayer and creativity, with complete trust that God will open doors – we will help grow God’s kingdom and his work through St. Luke’s.
