Today, we celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany. The Magi, three Kings or Wise Men (yes, they do exist….wise men that is!!) represent all the nations of the world, everyone is invited to come to know Christ as their Lord and Savior. Christ comes to save us all, there is no exclusion for those who live and act within the realm of God’s unconditional love. In his book ‘The Purpose of Christmas,’ Rick Warren writes: “If you sacrificed all you had to buy me a priceless and personalized Christmas gift and I never took time to unwarp and open it, how would you feel? You’d be disappointed, hurt, and angry at my callous rejection of your generous love. And for me, the gift would be worthless if I left it wrapped and sitting in the corner, there would be zero benefit to me. It is astounding that so many people have celebrated Christmas every year of their lives without ever having opened their greatest and most expensive Christmas gift. Jesus Christ is God’s Christmas gift to you. Wrapped up in Jesus are all the benefits and blessings you need. In Jesus your past is forgiven, you get a purpose for living, and you get a home in heaven. Why celebrate Christmas if you’re not going to open the best gift of all? The name Jesus actually means ‘God saves.’ Right now, Jesus says this to you: ‘I can replace the frustration in your heart with peace. I can replace your guilt and shame with forgiveness. I can replace your worry and anxiety with confidence. I can replace your depression with real hope. I can fill your emptiness with meaning and purpose. If you’ll trust me completely, I can replace your confusion with clarity. But I’m not going to break down the door of your heart. You’ve got to invite me in.’ Aren’t you ready to do that? It doesn’t matter whether you are Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu, Mormon or have no religious background at all. God didn’t send Jesus to bring us religion! He came to make a relationship with God possible. Now we rejoice in our wonderful new relationship with God – all because of what our Lord Jesus Christ has done for us in dying for our sins – making us friends of God.

Dear God, thank you for sending your Son, Jesus, so I could get to know you. Thank you for loving me. Thank you for being with me all my life even when I didn’t know it. I realize I need a savior to set me free from sin, from myself, and from all the habits, hurts, and hang-ups that mess up my life. I ask you to forgive me for my sins. I want to repent and live the way you created me to live. Be the Lord of my life, and save me by your grace. Save me from my sins, and save me for your purpose. I want to learn to love you, trust you, and become what you made me to be. Thank you for creating me and choosing me to be part of your family. Right now, by faith, I accept the Christmas gift of your Son. Fill me with your peace and assurance so I can be a peacemaker, and help me share this message of peace with others. In your name, I pray, amen.”

The magi brought gifts (gold, frankincense and myrrh) to the one who is THE gift to the world……Jesus Christ. O Come Let Us Adore Him! Amen!

Retreat for All High School Teens JANUARY 17-19 AT THE BETHANY CENTER

$100 INCLUDES FOOD/LODGING Does God care? Does He hear me when I speak to Him? If He hears me, does He speak back, and how can I know what He is saying? Communication is essential to every relationship, so it is not uncommon for these questions to arise when we talk about having a relationship with God.

All high school teens are invited to join us for our annual retreat where we will explore the Word of God and discover the love of God through His self-revelation. God has spoken, and He contin-ues to speak. God spoke each of us into existence and desires a personal relationship with us. We can learn to hear His voice by becoming familiar with the way He has communicated throughout salvation history and ultimately through Jesus Christ. “Spoken” leads teens through the Scriptures and offers unique encounters with God through prayer and the sacraments so that they live rooted in His Word. Contact Sarah in the Faith Formation office.

What is one of the best ways to become a stronger writer? The third graders will tell

you it’s to read the work of successful writers! Our class loves to gather around to read and discuss quality children’s literature. We have learned so much about the tools that writers use to create effective fiction and non-fiction.

In other areas of study, the third graders have been work-ing hard to master their multiplication and division facts. Every math class starts with the “Problem of the Day.” Students solve the problem on their mini-whiteboards and then turn to their classmates to discuss the strategies they used.

Our science classes include STREAM activities in which students collaborate to solve engineering challenges. One memorable project was to design a shelter to protect a virtual “dog” from the UV rays of the sun.

In social studies, we have been focusing on our beautiful North American continent. At the conclusion of our unit about Mexico, the class enjoyed a Fiesta Day with music, food, stories, and a pinata!

Surrounding all our studies is our faith. We have learned about the ministry of Jesus, the beginning of the Church, and the saints. The third graders know the “Come Holy Spirit” prayer by heart, and we pray that the Holy Spirit will accompany us throughout the rest of the school year and beyond.

2019 Annual Pastoral Appeal

We have received $262,940 in pledges and $259,685

paid toward our goal amount of $320,399.

We are so close! Let’s wrap this up!

Love is all around and Jesus is in our midst. Thank you to the 574 families who have responded generously to the 2019 Annual Pastoral Appeal on behalf of our parish. Your generosity is gratefully accepted. If you have not yet made a gift or pledge, please prayerfully consider the blessings you have received and the pray-ers that have been answered in your time of need. If you have already made a gift, please consider an additional gift to help us wrap this up!

When we don’t make our goal amount, the difference is paid out of the parish budget. If every household that has not responded to our Appeal gives just $37, we would meet our goal!

Star Gazers In a French cathedral there is a charming stone carving of the three kings wearing crowns and sharing one cozy bed. An angel points to a star and gently touches the hand of one king, who has awakened. The star is the one that led the kings to Bethlehem, and the

angel is warning them not to return to Herod. Tradition says that they were Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar, the first non-Jews to worship the Son of God. In the Middle Ages houses were blessed on Epiphany, reflecting how these magi found Christ “on entering the house.” Try reviving this ancient tradition. Incense the house, sprinkle holy water, and write in chalk over every outside doorway “20 + C + M + B + 11” (or whatever the year is). The letters honor the three kings and also stand for Christus mansionem benedicat, “May Christ bless this home,” and symbolize welcoming everyone into the home as Christ.

Living Stewardship Now A prayer for Epiphany:

Father, you revealed your Son to the nations

by the guidance of a star. Lead us to your glory in heaven

by the light of faith. (The Roman Missal, Opening Prayer for the Epiphany of the Lord)
