What is the Meaning of the Red Hat?The zucchetto was originally worn by clergy to cover the tonsure - the bald spot that marked their status as priest or brother - from the weather.
In the 15th century, it began to be used for ceremonial and liturgical occasions. Using the zucchetto to denote clerical rank came into practice. The color of the zucchetto reflects their episcopal order: Bishops wear violet, Cardinals wear red and the Pope wears white.
While the colors clergy wear are a sign of their station, they are a reminder of the call to serve Christ and His Church. Cardinals wear red because they are the closest advisors to the Pope. Wearing red is an outward sign that they are ready to shed their blood to defend the faith.
It is important to remember in this hierarchy, that it is truly Jesus who is the head of the Church. It is in Him that we are all called to love and serve God and neighbor. Therefore, you will notice the zucchetto is removed during the Eucharistic Prayer, this is a sign of respect for Jesus present in the Blessed Sacrament.
¿Cuál es el significado del solideo rojo?El zucchetto o solideo era usado originalmente por el clero para cubrirse la tonsura (la coronilla rasurada que marcaba su condición de sacerdote o hermano) y protegerse del clima.
En el siglo XV se comenzó a usar en ocasiones ceremoniales y litúrgicas. También se puso en práctica su uso para denotar el rango del clero. El color del solideo indica el orden episcopal: los obispos usan el violeta, los cardenales usan el rojo y el Papa usa el blanco.
Si bien los colores usados por el clero son una señal de su dignidad, son también un recordatorio del llamado a servir a Cristo y a Su Iglesia. Los cardenales visten de rojo púrpura porque son los asesores más cercanos del Papa. El vestirse de púrpura es una señal externa de que están dispuestos a derramar su sangre para defender la fe.
Es importante recordar, en esta jerarquía, que Jesús es verdaderamente quien es la cabeza de la Iglesia. En Él es que todos estamos llamados a amar y servir a Dios y al prójimo. Por lo tanto, veremos que el solideo se quita durante la Plegaria Eucarística, esto es un signo de respeto a Jesús presente en el Santísimo Sacramento.
