GT-R GETS AN INFINITI BRAND▲ After years of rumors, that Nissanwould bring the Skyline GT-R sport car tothe United States, it was finally a donedeal. However, the big questions hasbeen, “Will it be a Nissan or an Infiniti”?

Automotive News now is reporting thatthe Japanese super car will indeed be anInfiniti, because potential buyers aremore likely to shell out an estimated$65,000 for that nameplate. That makessense. AUDI TO RUN DIESEL AT LE MANSAudi plans to be the first manufacturer tocampaign at the legendary Le Mans racewith a diesel-powered car. The Audi R10is powered by a totally new 5.5-liter, 12-cylinder bi-turbo TDI (Turbo DirectInjection) engine. The engine producesmore than 650 hp and 1,100 Newtonmetres (811 lb.ft.) of torque, significantlyexceeding the power produced by themajority of previous Audi racing cars, including the victorious R8 predecessor.

The engine is hardly recognizable as adiesel because it runs so smoothly, plus ituses two diesel particle filters to clean theexhaust. The enormous diesel torquerequired engineers to outfit the car withspecial gearboxes. The usable powerbandis between 3,000 and 5,000 rpms, whichis exceptionally low for a racing engine;as a result, the driver is required tochange gears far less often. Plans call fortesting the R10 in the 12-hour race atSebring (USA) in March, prior to the LeMans race in June.

NEXT LEXUS FLAGSHIP If the Lexus LF concept cars are an accurate representation, the next

generation LS sedan should be trendsetter. The gorgeous styling will

be certain to turn heads, while the technical features will push the

flagship Lexus to the forefront of the luxury market. Reports have the

big sedan power coming from a choice of a traditional V-8 engine

rated at more than 300 horsepower or as a hybrid with nearly 400

horsepower when combined with the electric motor. The LS is also

expected to have available all-wheel drive with advance wet-road

electronic control system. It will also be available in a version

stretched by four or five inches. ▼

FORD’S DESIGN RENAISSANCE ▲ Ford’s latest all-new products andconcepts are showing a new Ford “look”.According to Ford’s Executive Director ofNorth American Design, Peter Horbury, the styling reflects “the clean look of Fordcars” of the 1960s with inspiration fromFord’s iconic Mustang. The new Ford styleincludes a three-bar chrome grille, broadshoulders, the absence of side lines and aslightly arched “powerdome” hood. Therewill also be quad headlights and dualexhausts. Previous Ford designs tookinspiration from European cars likeVolkswagen and Audi and tended to givethe brand a fuzzy unfocused look. Carsbuilt after the Five Hundred are starting toshow the all-new Ford look.

OVER THE TOP LEXUS FLAGSHIPPushing the luxury sedan envelopebeyond the competition, Lexus has intro-duced its new LS sedan to try to steal thespotlight from the upcoming Mercedes-

Benz S-Class. The new LS 460L introducedat the recent Detroit auto show gets a new380-hp V-8 engine with 36 percent morehorsepower than the previous model. Itproduces 0 to 60 mph times of 5.5seconds. The big news is an eight-speedautomatic transmission, besting Mercedes’seven-speed. The audio system is anunbelievable 19 speaker Mark Levinsonsystem with an internal hard-drive serverthat can store 4,000 songs. The rear seat ofthe long wheel base version is offered withreclining rear seats with an extendableottoman, a cooler and separate DVDentertainment system. It also boasts anintelligent parking system to help driverspark in those tight spots with only brakingassistance required by the driver. A shortwheelbase is also offered on the “ultimateLexus” and a hybrid version will be intro-duced at the New York auto show in April.

MINI TRAVELLER GETS APPROVALMini got the OK to start producing theconcept version of the Mini Travellershown at recent auto shows. Designedfrom scratch, the Traveller concept hasevolved between the last four major autoshows into the model that will beproduced. It has increased rear passengerspace and storage areas. Still a two-door,

the Traveller will have a cargo box in theluggage compartment and the rearsection of the roof will open for easierloading. Four seats will swivel to the sidefor easier access to the rear seat. Pricesand dates were not announced, but it willlikely be available within the next threeyears. Mini is owned by BMW.

AUDI S8 SPEED, AUDIO UPGRADESThe Audi S8 gets a performance upgradefor 2007 from a new 5.2-liter V-10 enginederived from the Lamborghini Gallardo. The 450-hp S8 accelerates to 60 mph in5.0 seconds and has a top speed limitedto 155 mph. (Audi officials have indicatedthe top speed would reach near 200 mphif unlimited.) The S8 will sell for anestimated $95,000.

A new $6,800 audio option is the firstapplication of a 1000-watt Bang andOlufsen audio system in a vehicle. It uses14 speakers, each with its own amplifierand two tweeter domes, which rise fromtheir hiding places beside the A-pillars.The sound is reported to be dazzling. ■

FORD BACKSEAT SAFETYFord displayed the first inflatable safetybelt for rear seat passengers at the Detroitauto show, using a small tubular airbagthat deploys along the rear shoulderseatbelt upon impact. The inflated portionof the belt limits head motion and canabsorb the impact forces of a crash. Alsodebuting in Detroit was a seatbelt remin-der for backseat passengers. The Belt-Minder will chime every 30 seconds forthe first five minutes of a trip to remindthe backseat passenger to buckle up.

VOLKSWAGEN LOOKING AT 3-WHEELERVolkswagen may be building a three-wheelvehicle, technically a motorcycle. With twowheels in front, the GX3 is driven by a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine (125-hp) drivingthe single rear tire. The GX3 can carry twopeople, get 46 mpg and accelerate from 0to 60 mph in just 5.7 seconds. It soundslike a great commuter car or sports car forweekends. If it is built, the GX3 is expectedto sell for less than $17,000 and could beready for the market as early as 2007.

VOLKSWAGEN RESURRECTS SCIROCCOVolkswagen officials have given approvalfor the recreation of the Scirocco coupe.Based on the Golf platform, the Sciroccostarted in 1974 and morphed through afew generations into the Corrado, whichwas dropped in 1994. The new coupe isexpected to have a base model poweredby VW’s new 1.4-liter (140-hp) super-charged and turbocharged four-cylinderengine. Other engines, all which may notmake it to the US, include a 170-hp four-cylinder, the 2.0-liter 200-hp turbo four-cylinder and a 3.2-liter (250-hp) VR6engine. Front-wheel drive will bestandard with 4Motion all-wheel drive asan option. If the horsepower race contin-ues a 300-hp GTI might be down theroad. Transmissions will likely be a six-speed manual and six-speed DSGautomatic shifting manual.

HONDA ENTRY LEVEL VEHICLE IS FITAs the Honda Civic gets bigger, it leavesroom at the bottom of the Honda lineupfor a new entry level car, and the Fit willfill that position this spring. The Fit is astylish, premium, entry-level five-doorhatchback. It looks small on the outside, but inside there is the same amount ofroom as an Audi A4 and almost as muchas the new Civic. The interior is recon-figurable with four distinctive seating andcargo carrying setups. Fit is powered by a109-hp 1.5-liter four-cylinder VTEC enginewith a five-speed manual transmission oran optional five-speed automatic withwheel-mounted paddle shifters. The Fitcomes with a long list of standard featuresand many customizing options.

This is Hyundai’s top-of-the-linesedan, and surely a symphony wasmore work and of more significance

to Ludwig von Beethoven than a sonata;but truly, Hyundai has come to the tablewith a significant step into the broadermarketplace, with the 2006 Sonata.

We anticipated the arrival of our testHyundai Sonata favorably. We knew theKoreans had been making fantasticstrides in style, features and quality, andwe’d already been seeing the Sonata onthe road. A lot. Our expectation was thatwe would find a vastly improvedmachine. We expected it to be somewhatlike a mainstream junior high kid... not-popular but not-unpopular, having all theright attributes, but not really beingvaulted into the cliquiest circles... with theHondas, Toyotas and other class stars.

Some suggest that the proper compar-ison for this vehicle is with other $25,000cars, and in this realm the Hyundai Sonatadoes very well, indeed. Others suggestthat, if it’s their top-of-line model, thecorrect comparison is with the tops of theother lines. Well, it doesn’t do half-badthere, either, and indeed for less cash.

Features are extensive and complete, and they are generally well executed.Controls are largely comfortable and easyto use, perhaps much moreso than a lotof more expensive but overly-trickedcompetitors. The K.I.S.S. theory, coupledwith an eye on budget, arguably creates awin-win scenario. The ride is still a bitsoft, what we can’t help thinking of as“Buicky.” From the first moment, webacked our test Sonata from its parkingspot down a sloped curb, turning to backinto the street, the floatiness was appar-ent, though not horribly so... reallydepends what you’re used to. This rideeffect is evident on normal surface streetcurves and turns, also. Not only does itdepend what you’re used to, but ofcourse it also depends what you want...so if your tastes lean more toward “plush”than toward “road feel,” then this is aplush plus for you.

Our vehicle was fitted with MichelinPilot HX MXM4 225/50 R 17 V-ratedrubber, which should supply supple gripand a comfortable ride, as well.

The new larger 2006 Hyundai Sonata has 121.7 cubic feet of interior volume to move it out of the midsize rating and into the EPAs “large car” category.

Hyundai Sonata puts major pressure on the competitionBy Barbara and Bill Schaffer

T he completely redesigned 2006 HyundaiSonata is here to challenge the big boys

like the Toyota Camry and the Honda Accordand frankly, it’s doing a great job. The sizes ofthe three cars are virtually identical, theengines are almost the same size, and theinitial quality appears very close. In fact, the2004 J.D. Power and Associate Initial QualityStudy listed the Sonata as the leader in theentry midsize segment, outpacing Americanand European competitors for the first time. And for 2006, the Sonata appears to be evenbetter than before. It’s wonderfully equippedwith many amenities and technology, offersgood ride and handling, advanced styling andis priced below the competition.

The only significant differences are on thewindow sticker, often a few thousand less forthe Hyundai, and a warranty that is five yearsor 60,000 miles for the Sonata and threeyears or 36,000 miles for the competitors. The Hyundai also has an industry-best 10-year or 100,000-mile powertrain warranty.

The new Sonata sports a clean fascia, sharply angled headlight assembly, rakedhood, and a sleek forward motion appearanceswooping down toward a clean-cut grille.

Inside you’ll find major improvements toquality and material making it more compet-itive with the Japanese brands.

The Sonata rides on a sophisticated four-wheel independent suspension with doublewishbones in the front and a five-link rear sus-pension in the rear, providing a very smooth, quiet ride while still retaining better thanaverage handling. It’s a little softer than I wouldchoose, but for the average driver it’s great.Engineers have obviously worked hard todampen interior noise through its rigid designand tight fit which nearly eliminated wind noise.

A 235-hp 3.3-liter V-6 engine powers the

Sonata’s front wheels through a smooth five-speed automatic transmission withShiftronic® manual control for those driversthat prefer to be more in touch with theshifting. The technologically advanced all-aluminum engine utilizes a ContinuouslyVariable Valve Timing (CVVT) system and afour-valve per cylinder double overhead camconfiguration. The V-6 engine is standardequipment on the top level LX version and anoption on the GLS model we drove.

The Sonata GLS is very well equipped, especially considering the cost. Standardequipment includes items shown in thesidebar, plus keyless entry with alarm, leather-wrapped steering wheel, driver’s lumbarsupport and other features for $20,895.Sonata GL starts at $17,895, powered by a162-hp 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, with afive-speed manual transmission and availablefour-speed automatic with Shiftronic.

In addition to electronic stability control andtraction control the Sonata features front seatside airbags, side curtain airbags, front activehead restraints and 4-wheel anti-lock brakesfor driver and passenger safety. Hyundai wasthe first non-luxury brand to include sideimpact airbags on all its models, standard.

Hyundai claims 0 to 60 mph accelerationtime in the 7.5 second range. My personalacceleration test gave a speed of 74 mph inthe approximate one-eighth mile distancefrom where I pull onto our main road.

EPA figures have the V-6 Sonata at 20 mpgfor city driving and 30 mpg on the highway. We actually averaged 27.8 mpg during ourweek of combined driving.

The Sonata is an impressive vehicleoffering style, comfort, economy and valueand it is worth looking at if you are in themarket for a mid-size sedan.

For several years we’ve been amazed atthe value offered on all the Hyundai vehicles.Compound that with the good fit and finishand add in the industry leading warranty andthe Hyundai Sonata looks like one of the bestbuys in the mid-size market. ■

ARIZONADRIVER • March-April 2006 • 21

We pulled the Sonata out onto aValley freeway and were immediatelyimpressed with the acceleration andthe smoothness of the ride. In fact, aGerman sedan saw the Korean car onthe merging double ramp and startedaccelerating from behind us... adios, muchacho! We left him in our PacificRim dust, and all at comfortable andlegal speeds (of course). The smoothride, however, became noticeablyharsher as soon as we passed fromrubberized asphalt to the old stuff. Our Michelins had decent sidewalldepth and generally would tendtoward the softer side, but differentrubber could make a difference inthis observation. As it was, though, any additional noise definitely makesit into the cabin, which seems todemonstrate reflect a need for moresound dampening in general.

Hyundai is taking the Japanesemakers head-on, and making signif-icant progress. Japan is the world’snumber two industrial economy, andKorea remains well behind that. ButHyundai has been at it for 40 yearsnow, and since hitting the US marketin earnest, it would seem that theKoreans are, indeed, doing as theJapanese originally did: they havelearned to study, copy and improve. And they are doing it in a giganticindustry and in big, comprehensivewaves, each quite well executed. Thebasics are there, the features arethere, the styling has come light years(some might suggest the Bangle BMWseries looks more Korean than thisHyundai, at this point)... and we’resure they’ll effectively tackle anyminor shortcomings further.

Definitely worth checking out. ■

R obert Lutz, GM Vice Chairman, ProductDevelopment, proclaimed that General Motorswould build a roadster for the masses; and they

did it; and it is good. The Pontiac Solstice sports car is thebest thing GM has done in years—with the possible

exception of the Corvette Z06 (which is nearly three timesthe price of the Solstice).

First shown at the 2002 Detroit auto show as a conceptvehicle, the 2006 Solstice is now a part of the Pontiac lineup.

We’ve been reading a great deal about it and were excited toget it for a full week of testing. The only down side is that we

could only take one child at a time. (Now that we think about it,there are times when that could be a very good thing.)

In keeping with traditional sports car architecture, the Solsticestarts from the new General Motors World rear-drive platform. The

unibody frame is engineered to provide extra strength and rigidityby using unique details like an enclosed tunnel that houses the trans-

mission and driveshaft. The sleek and progressive design of this classic roadster has a low

and aggressive stance. It features a long clamshell hood and a short reardeck. The sides of the Solstice are clean with fluid lines and wide 18-inchwheels and tires that are pushed as far toward the corners as possible.

The body color extends into the cabin, giving the Solstice a seamlessappearance when the top is down. Cockpit-style instruments are intui-tively placed around the driver and the pedals are placed perfectly foreasy heel-and-toe driving.

The 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine powering the Solstice is the GM Ecotec, but the name sounds more like something powering an economy sedan

than a sports car. Nevertheless, the 170 horsepower does a verygood job with 0 to 60 mph acceleration times arriving in 7.4seconds. For those of us who always cry for “more power” thereis a turbocharged version in the works with an estimated 260horsepower. That should really make the Solstice a standout.

Fuel economy is more in keeping with the engine name. TheEPA rates the Solstice at 20 mpg for city driving and 28 mpg onthe highway. We averaged 24.7 mpg in combined driving.

We were impressed by the five-speed manual transmissionthat clicked between the gears with the same precision we getfrom some expensive German cars. An available option is a GM-developed five-speed automatic transmission. A limited-slipdifferential option divides power equally between both rearwheels during normal conditions, but in low-traction situationsswitches the power to the wheel with the best traction.

The Solstice has a manually operated top that lowers behindthe seats in a separate, fully enclosed compartment with no visi-ble convertible top stack. The top operation is a little bit cumber-some, and it was necessary to flip up two wings on the rear edgeof the cloth top every time we got into the trunk. Like all sportscars, the Solstice is a little difficult to get in and out of when thetop is up. The top may not be the easiest to use, but it does agood job of sealing the interior and keeping wind noise down.

Standard equipment on the Solstice leans more to themechanical than convenience and luxury. It comes with five-

spoke painted wheels, four-wheel disc brakes, racing style seats,AM/FM/CD audio and tilt wheel for a starting price of $19,995including delivery. To dress it up, there are several option pack-ages including leather seating, polished wheels, XM radio, CDchanger, power locks, keyless entry, cruise control, powerwindows, air conditioning and anti-lock brakes, which jump theprice to $25,000. Still, that’s not a bad price for an exciting andfully loaded roadster.

The Solstice is aimed squarely against the popular MazdaMiata, and Pontiac has hit a home run. It has actually beenoutselling the Miata early in the first couple of months of 2006.It’s just as much fun to drive as the Miata, and performancefigures are very close, as is the driving experience. The Miatamight have a little more refinement than the Solstice, but driverswill enjoy either of these great cars.

This vehicle was quickly conceived and developed, initially ina four-month period, and it’s very well done. It shows that GMstill has the leadership and talent to build great cars. The Solsticehas unique roadster styling that sets it apart from anything onthe market, and then it delivers with performance and handlingto match. It has captured the hearts of sport car enthusiasts, andit has certainly captured our attention.

With its fantastic looks, good performance and near perfect50/50 balance, the Solstice has hit this home run for the Pontiacbrand at a time when the company needs it most. ■

MVD Licensed Driving School ProgramsDrivingMBA’s primary objective is to keep teen drivers and all of us safer on the road. Stories about teen drivers continue

to be featured in newspapers and publications across the country. DrivingMBA is the only driving school in Arizona that

uses state-of-the-art driving simulators to train its students. The airline industry has been using this type of technology for

decades to train pilots. The military also uses this type of technology to train soldiers, AND DrivingMBA’s equipment is the

same equipment that is being used by police academies throughout the country, including here in Arizona, for its advanced

driver training. The effectiveness of this type of driver training is indisputable, and DrivingMBA has documented results that

prove its driver education program works.

Whether your teen has never been behind the wheel, has driving experience or has their driver’s license, DrivingMBAis the only driving school with a driver training program to meet their specific needs. Don’t let your teen get their driver training

through trial and error. The errors are costly. They not only cost you in insurance rate increases, vehicle damage, but the

most significant cost, the loss of life. Whether it is you, your teen, friends or family, even someone you don’t know, a car

collision can change lives forever. Make sure your teen is prepared to handle all types of driving situations.

Driving is the most critical lifelong skill to learn—don’t take short cuts!

W hen the Honda Pilot debuted in 2003it was quickly received very well in

the sport-utility segment, with the flexibilityof an eight-passenger interior, the largestcargo carrying capacity in the segment andbest-in-class safety, fuel efficiency and emis-sions. And it has stood the test of time.

DESIGN – The Pilot is Honda’s version of thepopular Acura MDX, with more of a familyorientation and complete with a multitude ofstorage spaces, 12-volt electrical outlets andfast-food holders throughout the vehicle.

The exterior styling is uninspired but atimeless design that will look fresh for years.Like all Honda products, the Pilot is very wellbuilt and is simple in design and operation. The Pilot comes in three very well equippedmodels, the basic LX, mid-level EX and top-of-the line EX-L complete with all the goodieslike heated sets and a navigation system.

MECHANICAL – All models are powered by a244-horsepower, 3.5-liter VTEC V-6 engineand paired with a five-speed automatic trans-mission and innovative VTM-4™ (VariableTorque Management 4WD) full-time four-wheel drive.

PERFORMANCE AND HANDLING – With itsmuscular V-6 engine, the Pilot offers

respectable performance with 0 to 60 mphtimes of 8.2 seconds. With its four-wheelindependent suspension, variable assist rackand pinion steering and front and rearstabilizer bars the Pilot drives more like afamily sedan than a truck.

Fuel economy is a little better than theaverage SUV. We averaged 19.5 mpg; EPAratings are 18 mpg for city driving and 24 mpgon the highway.

COMFORT – To make egress and ingresseasier for the third row passengers, the Pilotfeatures a second row that is now adjustablefore and aft with an improved slide feature. The third row seating is small and best left toyoungsters or petite, agile adults.

All models are equipped with air condi-tioning, cruise control, AM/FM/CD/cassettestereo, driver and front passenger front andside airbags, as well as power windows, mirrors, keyless entry and door locks. The EXand EX-L models add more conveniences andspecial features as part of a standard package.

PRICE RANGE – See information in sidebar. We appreciate Honda’s simplified pricing thatbuilds vehicles with a generous level ofstandard equipment so customers don’t haveto add a long list of options to reach the rightequipment level. ■

VEHICLE REVIEW : 2006 HONDA PILOT

ÜBER-HONDABy Joe Sage and

Barbara & Bill Schaffer

ÜBER-HONDA

ARIZONADRIVER • March/April 2006 • 31

In the realm of SUVs, the Honda Pilotwouldn’t seem to offer many surprises.Based on the same chassis as the wildlypopular and capable Acura MDX, the Pilotoffers a more conservative style and alower price point. But, as with all Hondas,it is nonetheless fully equipped. Honda isa very small, family-owned company, andthey keep things quite basic: option listsare not their thing. Since pricing is soreasonable, as well, this is a very niceapproach, with as little as the mid-to-upper $20s bringing you a very completepackage in the Pilot.

From the moment we sat down in thedriver’s seat, the verdict seemed clear: ifyou like this car, it has no shortcomingsand will do the job well. As your test pilotis over six feet tall, we did notice that theseat doesn’t go back as far as we’d like, and the tilt steering wheel doesn’t rotatehigh enough to be able to see all theinstruments. The first could be custo-mized to fit; the latter, not.

Controls are clean, simple andfunctional, and they include a navigationscreen as complete (and intuitive andactually useful, unlike some) as what’sfound on the more expensive Acura...right down to automatically changing to arear TV image when backing up. Nice. And at a Honda price.

Some controls seem slightly odd, suchas a three-knob radio on which the centerknob is power and volume, counterin-tuitive to most drivers. The HVAC (heat-vent-air conditioning) controls are alsocentered, just above that, so ultimately itcould become an easy habit. Most suchtest-drivers’ quibbles are not at issue foran owner, who has more than our typicalweek to get used to these and only thesecontrols on an ongoing basis.

Prices on the Honda Pilot start at$26,996 for the very well equipped LXtwo-wheel-drive, and climb to $35,245for the EX-L with 4-wheel-drive andnavigation, plus $595 delivery. ■
