Shows News:
Happy Autumnal Equinox, Enl-Rockers!! (that’s on the 22nd, by the way)
The September club night is on Wednesday the 13th at:
The Windmill Club, Glassbrook Rd, Rushden NN10 9RP
For those who haven’t been before, park round the back (or front if there is room) go
to the front door, press the buzzer and they will let you in. The club meet in the room
on the right before the bar.
Cheers!
Mark
The Great British Land Rover Show is coming up – see above!
To celebrate this there will be a member’s club breakfast at Milligan’s in Finedon and then
a run to the show. So, if you want a good day out to the last show of the season let me or
Kev know and we will collate from there.
As you can see, tickets are a fiver more on the day than in advance (!) so if you are certain
of attending, getting them early might be a good idea. As always, however, that is a bit of
a gamble if you can’t make it in the end.
Before then it’s Cranford and The Adventure Overland Show:
Cranford passes are with Kev or already distributed – we have around 12 units attending
this year, and four attending Adventure Overland so we’re a bit spread out, but that’s the
point – we are out there!
And next:
Kev has 4 units booked in at Truxx Factor above. If you want to join in as well please let him
know now! I can’t make this one myself because we are laning (see the laning section
below).
Trials News:
Apparently the August trial at Clipston was excellent fun (no surprise there!) – Four drivers
took part and it was won by Dan Marshall.
Some pics:
Your next trialling calendar dates are:
15/10/17- Cranford RTV/CCV (open permit)
19/11/17- Clipston RTV
17/12/17- Weston Underwood RTV
Don’t be a wuss, turn up and support your club – spectating is free! Take butties and coffee
and you’re all set for the day! All scrutineering starts at 9am – ish... Trials sections normally
start around 9:30 or so.
Motivational Poster of the Month Section:
ENLROC Summer Holiday 2018: Yep, that’s right – how about a club summer holiday, camping or B&B-ing and green-laning in northern France?!
The things I line up for you – you lucky people! There is a campsite between Rouen and Le Mans that deserves our attention. It is called
Forest View Camping and is owned by Brit expats Peter and Sarah. Peter is a Land Rover
enthusiast, just like us! And he owns a defender and a classic and uses both AND, and this is
a very important AND, there are 40 miles of forestry green lanes within 10 miles of the
campsite. Oh yes, and he knows where they are. The site is beautifully manicured with
large pitches, has excellent toilets and showers, a lovely ‘plat de jour’ restaurant, a fine and
inexpensive little bar, a carp fishing lake and wonderful local market towns. It is a little
piece of heaven just 250 miles from Calais (only about 150 from Dieppe) and I recommend
it to you so highly that I think we would be neglecting our presence on the planet if we
didn’t make a club visit next summer. Proper Land Rover country too!
Some photos:
So, let me know who wants to go and I’ll arrange it!
It will have to be after mid-July for me, unless we go at Easter…
More info at: http://www.forestviewfrance.co.uk/index.html
Go on, take a look. If you’d like to have a guide down there I can do that as well I speak
enough French to get by and have spent several summers in France of late, so I can show
you how the place works if you want, though Peter and Sarah obviously know far more
than me!
One other point – the local booze is very inexpensive in that region, so you can stock up
before going home and probably pay for your crossing! Diesel is cheaper than here, too.
The Obvious Stats Section:
Although I can’t help noticing that the Jeep contingent get a better press than we do…
Ho Hum.
Wickes 2 Wickes Laning! Well, Sort of…
Five ENLROC members went a-laning on Saturday 2nd September, as planned, but the
Wickes 2 Wickes part didn’t really happen…
So this is how the first W2W run went:
Firstly, there was an epic breakfast at the fabulous Swedish Kitchen at Wickes, Rushden:
And then we set off for Newton Bromswold, Shelton, Easton, and Tilbrook with a vague idea
that Bedford Wickes was the proposed destination, but as we were having such an
excellent time the destination became irrelevant, so we just drove from one lane to the
next, to the next, to the next and ate a few blackberries on the way and were in Stow
Longa at one point (or so I am told – I was completely lost!)… Top day out!
So what happened in the end? We came across a closed lane heading into Grafham, so
we adjourned to Kimbolton for fantastic Gelato ice cream) instead!! (The Tiramisu flavour
was amazing!)
Forgot to get a photo of that…
And because we never made it to second Wickes this activity has now been renamed. It is
henceforth to be known as the “To Wickes And Then Somewhere” section, or ‘T.W.A.T.S.’ for
short.
Never mind, the next ENLROC T.W.A.T.S green lane outing starts at the Swedish Kitchen at
9:30am on Saturday 30th September, the day before all the local Beds and Cambs lanes
close for the winter… Ah well, it’s good for them. Perhaps there will still be a few
blackberries left even so late in the season! See you there!
The LRs We Saw On Our Holidays Section:
In Mussidan, near Bordeaux the Fire Service have some awesome trucks, and look at what
is behind this lovely Defender!
Love this, whatever it is…
And then there was Marcel’s Range Rover Sport which lives in the Pyrenees Mountains all
year round and is regularly used in proper Land Rover conditions that we can only dream
of! This photograph was taken on a track in Spain, but Marcus lives in France and is
currently building a mountain retreat that has views of the Pyrenees to the West and of the
Mediterranean Sea to the East. Jealous? I should co-co!
Or how about the amazing German registered TD5 Defender camper pictured below. This
was on a site in the Costa Brava about an hour north of Barcelona. It was built 20 years ago
by the father of the current owner who holidayed in it as a boy and now he takes his own
family on holiday in the same vehicle! Fantastic, but I forgot to get his name! (sorry)
And then there was the fab Series 3 (I think!) that was driving around the tiny streets of
Macanet de Cabrenys in Catalunya. Just wonderful, though I don’t speak enough Spanish
(yet) to have had a chat with the owner. Directly ahead is the main street through the
town (really!), and the pretty lady posing in front of it is Trish!
Also a street you can drive cars down (people did):
One more, outside a restaurant in Dieppe (another fab place to be) gratuitously, my RR :
Club Shop:
There are still a few ENLROC goodies up for grabs and the shop is open to offers for the old
stock! Here is a list…
New clothing items etc. are available (in the old style) by special order only – catalogues
currently held by Gail but in the event that you feel you might like to run the club shop
please approach Barry and we can second you onto the committee!
That’s not essential just to buy stuff, by the way, but I thought I’d throw it out there!
Joke of The Month Section:
New section, this (as you might have noticed). The first Joke:
On board a cruise ship the nightly cabaret includes a magical act, The Great
Marvo! Now Marvo the Magician had been doing his act on this ship, week in and
week out, for 3 years and every night he had one consistent audience member,
the captain’s parrot. The parrot was a bit of a clever old bird and he got to know
Marvo’s routines rather well and eventually, being quite mischievous and very
annoying, he started to chip in and squawk loudly at inopportune moments
throughout the act. His comments included things like “It’s under the hat!” or “He’s
got another one up the other sleeve!” or “There are two rabbits!” Needless to say
Marvo was quite upset by all this heckling which was having a terrible effect on his
act and his life in general, but what could he do? It was the Captain’s parrot! He
knuckled down and carried on, changing a few things and hoping to throw the
bird off, but it always came back with something new and spoiled many of his best
tricks, making life quite difficult for the poor magician.
One night a few months after this started, during a terrible storm, the ship struck an
iceberg and sank killing nearly everyone on board. Marvo managed to escape
from the doomed vessel and, diving into the sea, he swam for a short while before
finding a wardrobe floating on the surface and he was able to climb onto it where
he fell asleep. As the sun came up he was joined by an exhausted companion, the
parrot, who had been flying around the open ocean for hours looking for
somewhere to land.
Marvo’s hatred of this avian intruder was tempered by the fact that the parrot was
clearly in a terrible state and just needed somewhere to rest, as he did, so he
vowed not to harm the bird but to tolerate its presence as long as he was able. The
parrot, for his part, just sat at the other end of the wardrobe and watched Marvo.
This went on for an entire day, a night, another day and a second night with neither
of them speaking or communicating to each other in any way. Then finally, in the
middle of the morning on the third day the parrot cleared its throat with a light
warble and, as Marvo turned towards it, it said “Okay, I give up. Where’s the ship?”

The Small Print: The ENLROC SLIDER does not accept responsibility for unsolicited manuscripts, articles or photographs,
worsening standards at previously respected specialist establishments or overworked staff making piteous errors. Failing to
tighten an oil filler cap so that it gets lost in central France and breaking all the clips on a Range Rover sidelight whilst
changing a bulb during a routine service are not openly forgivable and may necessarily precede the taking of business
elsewhere, as sad as that may be. Extra home maintenance and the purchase of specialist tools must therefore follow, but to
the greater good overall. Nor does the slider accept responsibility for those who see human error as an immutable weakness,
not a potential strength. Maybe I'm foolish, maybe I'm blind, thinking I can see through this, and see what's behind, got no
way to prove it, so maybe I'm blind, but I'm only human after all, I'm only human after all, don't put your blame on me., don't
put your blame on me. Interesting. Thank you Rag’n’Bone Man for vindicating the position here at Slider Towers and for
clarifying the status of the third party errors outlined above. “To err is human, to forgive divine”. – Alexander Pope (1688 –
1744). Very little is as clear as it first seems.
