ENW starts this week with a common and popular joke. Two boys are 1: _________ in the wood when a bear suddenly comes out and growls loudly at them. The first boy quickly puts on his trainers. The other boy says in a 2: _________ voice, “You can’t outrun a bear you fool!” “Ahh” says the second boy, “I don’t have to outrun the bear. I just need to run faster than you!”

2

Perhaps you know this joke – and if you did actually meet a bear in the wild…trying to 3: ________ may not be the best idea. However, a new guide has just been published does give useful tips as to how you might survive an encounter with a wild animal that could look upon you as the main course of its afternoon snack.

3

The first piece of advice explains what to do if a 4: _________ decides that you are what it wants for a tasty dinner. The answer is surprisingly simple, if not rather foolhardy, you need to punch the shark in the face! Only last week a British couple was 5: ________ off the coast of the Ascension Island when a Galapagos Shark grabbed the wife’s leg. The husband came to his wife’s rescue by punching the shark nine times hard in its face!

4 Another amphibian that could cause you serious harm is the 6: ________ crocodile. These reptiles can grow more than 2 metres long and are incredibly quick and silent swimmers. The guide’s advice is relatively simple – when inside a boat keep your arms and legs 7: ________ at all times! However if you do see a crocodile – keep your eyes staring at it. Apparently crocodiles don’t like to be looked at and will swim away!

5 Switching to land the advice to avoid being bitten by a vampire bat is rather straightforward – keep a light 8: _________ all night around you. Wasps, although usually not lethal can be an annoying and sometimes painful creature to encounter. The best advice when a wasp wants to 9: _________ your sugary food is to not kill it. If you do, tiny chemicals leak from the dying wasp and alert its nest mates. This tends to make them rather angry and hostile…

6 Oh and what is the best advice if you do come across an angry bear? Well if it is Grizzly Bear – play dead. Hopefully it will soon get 10: _________ and leave. However, if it is a Black Bear – run like the wind! The only problem is that the Black Bear and the Grizzly Bear look very, very alike…
