PSYCHOLOGY
Resources for Courses
OverviewThe purpose of this activity is to revise the endocrine system and ensure that students understand the function of the different glands and hormones released.
Resources Required • The endocrine system handout (either 1 x A4 per student or 1 x A3 per group)
•The endocrine system cut & paste handout (either 1 x A4 per student or 1 x A3 per group)
• Scissors and glue (for Teaching and Learning Strategy A)
Teacher InstructionsTeaching and Learning Strategy AThere are different ways that you can uses these resources, depending on how much time youwish to spend on the endocrine system.
If you want take a kinesthetic approach, then provide each student with a copy of the endocrine system handout and a copy of the endocrine system cut & paste handout. Instruct the students to cut out the labels and descriptions and line these up with the arrows on their endocrine system handout. Tell the students that they should not stick their labels down until they have checked with you first. Once you’re happy that the students have the correct answers, then they should stick these down.

Teaching and Learning Strategy BIf you wish to take a faster approach, then then provide each student with a copy of the endocrine system handout and a copy of the endocrine system cut & paste handout. However, instruct the students to use the information on the cut & paste handout to simply write the answers on their diagram.
Teaching & Learning Hint: If you are using the version 2 activity, specify the order in which the students outline their compIf the students are reluctant to write because they are worried that they might be wrong, provide the students with pencils, or if your budget allows, two copies of the diagram, so that they can have no excuse!
Stretch & ChallengeYou probably don’t want to check 25 different diagrams, so once a student has finished with the correct answers, make this student you responsible for checking any subsequent queries from your class.

The endocrine systeM CUT AND PASTE
Pineal Gland
Releases melatonin
Thyroid Gland
Releases oestrogen
Ovaries (female)
Releases testosterone
Testes (male)
Hypothalamus
Releases thyroxine
Pituitary Gland
Releases adrenaline & noradrenaline
Adrenal Gland (Medulla)
Releases cortisol
Adrenal Gland (Cortex)
Responsible for important biological rhythms, including the sleep-wake cycle.
Responsible for regulating metabolism.
Controls the regulation of the female reproductive system, including the menstrual
cycle and pregnancy,
Responsible for the development of male sex characteristics during puberty while
also promoting muscle growth.
Stimulates and controls the release of hormones from the pituitary gland.
sometimes known as the master gland because the hormones released by this gland control and stimulate the release of hormones from
other glands.
The key hormone in the fight or flight response.
Stimulates the release of glucose to provide the body with energy, while supressing the
immune system.SAMPLE
