Do You Have a Problem You Wish Someone Else Would Solve?

For just a moment consider this frequently employed philosophy: “I think the best way to solve problems is to avoid them. No problem is so big or complicated that you can’t run away from it!” Most of us have witnessed firsthand the failure of this particular philosophy. Certainly, this strategy works for the short term, but the long term leaves you having to face the reality that no wind has blown the problem into someone else’s yard like a pile of leaves in the fall. In fact, not only does the problem not go away, it frequently has grown in size in the interim like a lump of dough that has been leavened! Remember those old horror movie villains? One thing that makes those films so frightening is the fact that no matter how fast and furiously the victim-to-be runs away, the villain is always only a few steps behind…and he’s WALKING!!! And just when the prey thinks they have escaped and can breathe a sigh of relief, they turn around and are face-to-face with the evil one! You can probably recall a similar experience with some troubling situation in your life. It’s possible you procras-tinated in making necessary decisions or put off tackling hard chores or just ignored an important matter altogeth-er. Maybe you indefinitely tabled a difficult discussion with a family member or friend or put some distressing mail out of sight and out of mind, or perhaps you swept under the rug the need to make something right in your Chris-tian walk. And all was well for a while…until one day the problem was back, bigger than ever, and staring you right in the face! It takes courage to confront the challenges of life. The well-known story of David and Goliath (1 Samuel 17) is an inspiring example. We can let the giants in our life continue to intimidate us and back us down day after day, or we can say, “Enough is enough!” and charge them head-on. When we find that kind of strength within ourselves, the surprising result is often a much easier victory than we had anticipated. David had five stones in his bag, but only needed one! If you want to make being courageous much easier, take the Lord along with you. Hebrews 13:5-6 tells us that God says: “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” So we can confidently say, “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?” In Matthew 11:28-29 Jesus invites us to give the big problems to him. All we have to do is hand them over know-ing his courage will never fail us. Is there something you’ve been trying to run away from? If you find in yourself the tendency to delay doing what needs to be done, start praying for a spirit of bravery and boldness and start asking for the Lord’s help. We are called to be conquerors, not cowards.

As we “Go” together,

Dennis

CHASE’S COMMENTS...

Become Involved

Human Resources people tell us that the first step in motivating employees to better service is by showing them how their job fits in to the company's overall objectives. The idea is that if they understand the "big picture" and what part they play, they will work more intelligently and therefore more profitably and creatively.

I believe that if we used the same approach in our commitment to follow Jesus as disciples we would rediscover a greater desire to serve Him with our new sense of purpose. If we examined the Scriptures carefully we would under-stand that the purpose of our Christianity is two-fold:

1. To Glorify God

- Matthew 5:16 - Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

2. To be a Witness for Christ

- Matthew 10:32 - Therefore everyone who confesses Me before men, I will also confess him before My Father who is in heaven.

This is accomplished through evangelism (Mt. 28:18-20) and love (Jn. 13:35). Once we understand the big pic-ture and we work to involve ourselves and serve God effectively with our abilities, the Kingdom will grow and prosper. May we all accept the tasks assigned to us and with the help of our brothers and sisters, begin to change the world.
