FIRST LET’S MAKE THINGS THAT LAST.

The Emeco 1006 Navy chair was first commissioned in the 1940s by the U.S. Navy for use on warships – the contract even specified that it had to be able to withstand torpedo blasts. Today our chairs are still made in the U.S.A., of 80% recycled aluminum, and are made by hand, by Emeco craftsmen using the original 77 step process. The world’s best architects and designers collaborate with us to design chairs that are built and guaranteed to last a lifetime.

As we apply what we’ve practiced in the past, we are looking toward the future. We are on a mission to make a positive impact on the environment. Our goals are to use waste material in our products, use as little energy as possible in our manufacturing, generate a minimum of waste in the process, and build strong, durable, beautiful chairs that last through generations. We’ve been on the same mission since 1944 and we will continue to search for new ways to recover and utilize discarded materials and make products that last.

FIRST pRINcIpLES. LASTING vALuES.

During World War II, The Office of Civilian Defense, created in May 1941, organized salvage drives for rubber, tin, paper and aluminum. The drives intensified when the United States entered the war.

Small towns across the United States undertook a series of conservation measures which included rationing, production of food in home “Victory” gardens for one’s own use, and collections of scrap materials to be remanufactured into war material. Many different kinds of items were collected and recycled, including iron, steel, rubber, copper, brass, aluminum, zinc, lead, paper, tin cans, and aluminum pots and pans. The scrap drives helped build morale at home and helped to illustrate and encourage conservation.

It was during this emotional time of national pride that Emeco began to design, build and ship indestructible, lightweight aluminum chairs – the original “Navy Chair” – for use on submarines and in the government and military buildings being staffed for the war effort. The value of doing more with less, of salvaging scrap to build new products is part of the heritage of Emeco. Generations of Emeco craftsmen have spent their lives working with aluminum and they have passed down the values of conservation of resources, and the work ethic of creating superior quality products through teamwork and expert workmanship.

Aluminum is the most abundant of metals in a mineral called Bauxite. It is non-magnetic, it resists corrosion, and it has good reflective abilities. It also holds the ability to easily be recycled, repurposed, and reused. Approximately 75% of aluminum produced since 1888 is still in use today.

Since 1944, Emeco has been manufacturing and designing chairs built from 80% recycled aluminum. Of this recycled content, half comes from post-industrial waste (manufacturing scrap) and half comes from post-consumer waste (soft drink cans). Other chairs made from virgin aluminum have an energy density that is 17 times higher than that of Emeco chairs. Emeco all-aluminum chairs are 100% recyclable. But while recycled content and ability to be recycled is important, what truly makes our aluminum chairs smart, is that their estimated life span is 150 years or more, as a result of our unique 77 step process.

The breakthrough for plastic came in the 1950s when it became cheap and easy to produce. The material saw great success with an exponential increase in production as it became a material used everywhere. As a result we are left with a growing abundance of plastic waste that can take an estimated 500-1000 years to fully break down. However, by using only recycled plastic, we take an inherently unsustainable material bound for the landfill and turn it into something smarter and better.

Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) is one of the most common types of plastics, often used to create plastic fibers for textiles and bottles. If PET is used for injection molding, as it is when we use it to make our 111 Navy Chair, a significant amount of time and effort has to go into the special technique and formula used to turn it into a structurally sound object.

We see the opportunity in the problem of waste PET and a solution, creating a new chair using a smart new material made from recycled plastic bottles. Every weekday ten truckloads of PET bales consisting of more than 20,000 bottles arrive for processing to the recycling plant. These bottles are sorted, ground, and washed to become the primary material used in our 111 Navy Chair. Each individual chair is made of 4 Kg of rPET plastic pellets or approximately 111 plastic bottles. The material is then mixed with glass fiber to give the chair its incredible strength. Since the launch of the 111 Navy Chair in 2010, we’ve kept over 7 million plastic bottles out of the landfill, and that number is growing every day.

GRINDING & WASHING20,000 bottles are processed every weekday, sorted, ground, and washed to create rinse flakes.

ROASTING & ETCHINGThe rinse flakes are roasted via a patented process to remove volatile organic content. Outer layers are then etched to remove impurities.

MELTING & FORMINGThe flakes are mixed with glass fiber and non-toxic color before being melted down and injected into a mold. After loading the mold, the chair is formed, hollowed out by gas injection, tempered and cooled.

Composites are materials which combine and arrange various compatible elements into new, unique materials. All elements have different characteristics, sought-after advantages, and unique disadvantages, but by carefully joining various elements, new material composites can be created that solve problems left unsolved by traditional materials.

Wood polymers are composites made from reclaimed industrial polypropylene waste collected from the plastic manufacturing industry and reclaimed wood fiber, sawdust, or shavings from the lumber industry.

Wood Polypropylene (WPP) is often used for outdoor decks, footbridges, and fences where the material has a wood-like appearance while needing almost no protection to last a long life. By combining reclaimed polypropylene and reclaimed wood fiber, we continue to go further with a goal of repurposing waste while making things that last.

The Broom chair is made of a new composite of discarded industrial materials, reclaimed even before they enter the long waste-cycle that most recycled materials have to undergo today. By reclaiming the waste in its purest form we save natural resources and reduce energy at the same time. Together, the wood and polypropylene mix becomes a strong and durable composite called WPP. By using reclaimed waste instead of raw materials we reduce both waste and energy.

RECLAIM INDUSTRIAL WASTEReclaimed polypropylene and reclaimed wood fiber are sorted, ground and compressed into a wood-polypropylene composite called WPP.

1006 Navy by EMECOWilton Dinges, who founded Emeco in 1944, compared the 1006 Navy Chair to a Rodin sculpture – a handcrafted piece of art. The chairs were first built for the US Navy in World War II. It takes 77 individual steps to make the 1006 Navy Chair. It is guaranteed for life.

We get the most out of the material we use. For years, that material was aluminum. We developed a way to work with it to make products of extraordinary strength, durability and beauty.

In 2006 Coca-Cola approached Emeco with a problem: Billions of plastic bottles were being sent to the landfill every year. We saw an opportunity. By up-cycling, we transformed the waste into a new material. It took years to develop the new material we now use for the 111 Navy Chair. It’s strong, durable, and it has a deep beauty that people love when they touch it. And it’s made from recycled plastic bottles. In fact, we called it the 111 Navy Chair because every chair we make takes 111 plastic bottles out of the landfill.

SOSO by NOuvElFrench designer Jean Nouvel drew upon his “philosophy of nothingness” to create the simple, lightweight, Emeco “SoSo Collection” of chairs and barstools. “I just kept the same Emeco DNA and evolved it into a new light and comfortable chair. Working with Emeco is like being in a field of wheat. The crop is grown and my job was to simply harvest,” said Nouvel. The collection is handmade of 80% recycled aluminum, by Emeco craftsmen using the same process Emeco has employed to fabricate the famous 1006 Navy Chair since 1944.

cago Museum of Contemporary Art. “The minute we met, Ettore told me he was an admirer of the Navy chair and in fact wished he had designed it. And we agreed, why not re- de-sign it,” remembers Mr. Buchbind-er. “I had seen Sottsass’ projects in Domus magazine over the years – Esprit, the Amazon Express yacht - in which he had used our chair. Ettore was the first designer who took our chairs out of their typical environments -navy ships prisons, hospitals- and to use them in con-temporary interior design projects. Through him Sir Terence Conran, Frank Gehry and Philippe Starck discovered the Emeco chair creat-ing resurgence in the 1990’s. It was only right to commission him to cel-ebrate Emeco’s resurrection with a new collection.”

aDriaN vaN hOOyDONK / BMW DESiGNWOrKS“Emeco planned a re-issue of an old chair from 1951, but we quickly agreed that Emeco should create a version of ‘1951’ that retained Eme-co’s DNA, yet looked forward, Gregg instinctively knows what is good for Emeco and we agreed that the mod-ernization of the original chair would be 100 % Classic Emeco - simple, utilitarian and masculine. Lines and surfaces were discussed at length, as well as the “Stance” of the new ‘1951’, which is a lot more dynamic than the original. The design phase that followed was one of the most collaborative and rewarding expe-riences of my life. I had dealt with similar issues designing modern cars for the Mini and BMW brands, and I have incorporated these ide-

as. ‘1951’ is the first Emeco product that combines new materials for the seat and back - technically molded ABS plastic, with classic aluminum construction. This will allow cus-tomers to add color and simplifies manufacturing - reducing cost. As in good car-design, these added func-tional elements create a clean, sim-ple and dynamic look that will ap-peal to costumers on an emotional level while projecting strength.”- AVH

FraNK GEhry“I wanted three things in this chair: comfort, light weight, and strength. Aluminum was the obvious choice and Emeco was the only company that could make it. It’s been a fun project, and amazingly quick – just 11 months from the first meet-ing with Gregg to the Milan intro-duction. Gio Ponti’s Superleggera chair was the inspiration – and I’ve always wanted to design a super lightweight chair. I tried to extract the essence – structure and skin, where engineering and design are one thing. SUPERLIGHT is a chair that moves to accommodate all body types- the sitter activates the chair. And we got it down to 6 ½ pounds, and that makes it easier for a lot more people to use and move around.”- FG

KONSTaNTiN GrCiCIn 2005, The Parrish Art Museum which was founded in 1898 in South-ampton, New York, purchased a new piece of property nearby in Water Mill, NY and hired Herzog and de Meuron Architects to design a new

building for the museum. Herzog asked German designer Konstantin Grcic to do the interior design and Grcic approached Gregg Buchbinder and Emeco to suggest they collab-orate on the design and production of tables and chairs for the Parrish.

Grcic, said, “Emeco is simply the only company I could think of who could bring a nice mix for this interi-or concept, specialists in aluminum, delivering another kind of material appearance, environmentally sound, perfect for both indoor and outdoor and being such a truly American company – it was a perfect match.”

Buchbinder and Emeco are thrilled to collaborate with Grcic and amazed by Grcic’s ability to find a new de-sign vocabulary for an Emeco chair. “Konstantin’s degree of perfection combined with his analytical rigor made the product development pro-cess deliberate and thoughtful. He managed to leverage our heritage and at the same time push Emeco into the future. The Parrish Chair reminds me of something Le Cor-busier might have designed in the 1920’s; yet at the same time, it looks fresh, modern, and original – it’s a real artifact of our current culture, a future classic,” said Buchbinder.

The Parrish Art Museum opened the doors of its new 34,400 square building in November of 2012, and Emeco officially launched the Par-rish Chair at the Salone del Mobile in 2013.

Emeco is a leader when it comes to chair fabrication. We are committed to sustainability and protecting our environment. Emeco uses post consumer and post industrial waste to create chairs intended to last decades. Our aluminum chairs are made to last at least 150 years. Emeco is committed to minimizing our impact on the environment by choosing materials, methods and processes that offer the least risk to our environment. We utilize the best available control technologies to reduce air emissions where needed, recycling waste and used materials at every opportunity, eliminating other impacts to the environment, such as releases to surface water, and reducing the carbon footprint of our products to minimum achievable levels.

We strive to improve the energy efficiency of our operations in all areas. In addition to reducing energy consumption, whenever possible we select energy sources that have the lowest impact on the environment, such as electricity from renewable resources. These policies are part of our effort to reduce the carbon footprint of our products. With this goal in mind, we also consider the carbon footprint impact in all critical decisions, such as using recycled aluminum in the manufacturing of our products.

Selected initiatives supporting our policy:• Emeco’s products are manufactured in the US.• The Emeco factory in Hanover PA conforms to all applicable US, State and Local environmental requirements.• Emeco uses clear coat anodizing as the surface finishing method for most of our products. This not only significantly reduces particulate emissions, but also produces no volatile organic carbons (VOCs) in the application of the finish.• All welding machines have internal cooling systems to reduce water consumption by 15%• Advanced lighting technologies are installed throughout our manufacturing operations resulting in a 24% annual reduction in electrical consumption rate.• 80% of our aluminum raw materials come from a recycled source.• Of the recycled aluminum, half is post consumer (soft drink cans) and half is postindustrial (manufacturing scrap). Chairs made out of virgin aluminum have an energy density that is 17 times higher than that of Emeco chairs.• Emeco’s aluminum scrap generation-rate is approx. 6% annually by weight.• Emeco Manufacturing returns 100% of aluminum scrap to recyclers.• Emeco all-aluminum chairs are 100% recyclable.• Emeco’s 111 Navy Chair contains 65% Recycled PET plastic.• 100% of the PET used comes from a post consumer recycled source.• Emeco’s Recycled PET chairs are 100% recyclable.• Whenever possible, Emeco uses sustainable timber and water based stain finishes on our wood components.
