THE ELEMENTS OF STYLE GRAMMAR LESSONS
DO NOW: ANALYZE THE QUOTE
WILLIAM STRUNK, JR.
•William Strunk, Jr., was born July 1, 1869, in
Cincinnati, Ohio. Died- September 26, 1946,
Poughkeepsie, NY.
• After earning a bachelor's degree at the
University of Cincinnati in 1890 and a Ph.D. at
Cornell University in 1896, Strunk went on to have
a long career as an educator.
• He taught English at Cornell for forty-six years.
• Strunk wrote the first edition of The Elements of
Style for the use of his students and had it
privately printed in 1918.
FAMOUS QUOTE ABOUT STRUNK AND HIS BOOK, WRITTEN BY E.B. WHITE (CO-AUTHOR/HE REVISED THE BOOK IN 1959)
• I think though, that if I were ever in the, to me, unthinkable position of facing a
class in English usage and style, I would lean far over the desk on the first day,
clutch my lapels, blink my eyes, and intone: say: Get the little book. Get the
little book, get the little book. Then I would dismiss the class for two weeks,
and tell them to come back when they had learned its rules. The rules of the
game.
5 points of extra credit for the first person that
can name what other major work E.B. White
wrote.
