The common language of art and design
Works of art contain important things to look for that are obvious, and some not so obvious. As a visual learner (artist), you need to know what to look for in a work of art, and to know how to communicate about it.
Art has a language of its own. There are words that relate to visual Elements, or basic parts, and Principles which allow the components to interact together to create art.
…are basic components, or building blocks of design.
These Elements include: color, value, line shape, form, space and texture
… are the different ways the elements can be used in a work of art.
These Principles are: balance, emphasis, unity, movement, contrast, movement, and pattern
First, look for ways to create Unity using Elements that appear similar …
Then decide ways to create some differences in certain Elements to create Emphasis
…is to use other Principles such as…
Rhythm >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> and
Pattern<><><><><><><><><><>
..is like a steady and pure “beat of a drum”
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Is like a “beat of the drum” only with some variety with Elements:
<O><O<>O><O<>O><O> >O<>O><O<>O><O<>O> <O><O<>O><O<>O><O> >O<>O><O<>O><O<>O>
When you compare things you are looking at the…
Simularities.
When you contrast something you look to the…
Differences
Compare > Similarities> Creates: UNITY
Contrast > Differences >
Creates: EMPHASIS
Unity is the look and feel of oneness or cohesive nature in a work of art.
When Unity is present you see the elements working together in any combination of similar or common sizes, shapes and color, line direction, etc.
Unity is the metaphorical glue that holds a work together
Rhythm and pattern cannot exist outside the concept of unity.
Rhythm is create by consistent repetition of visual “beats”
Rhythm refers to the regular repeating occurrence of Elements in the scene just as in music it refers to the regular occurrence of certain musical notes and beats over time.
To create Unity one must create similarities, low or no contrast, in the Elements/components of a work
To create Emphasis one must add components (Elements and Principles) that create a difference or high contrast.
