The El Dorado County Healthy Living Parklet 2016-2017 Design Competition The Challenge: Design a small park in an existing parking space (7X14 feet) that will provide rest and recreation opportunities for adults and children. About the Parklet Competition: A parklet is a small public area that transforms a former parking space into a public recreation area. Parklets are a temporary place for the public to rest, recreate and enjoy the city. The Healthy Living Parklet Design Competition is intended to be driven by our community, engage our youth, promote design excellence and deliver a new space that encourages a healthy, active lifestyle. The theme is ‘Healthy Living’ and the competition is looking for El Dorado High School Students to be inspired to submit proposals that are innovative, creative and resourceful. All parklet design concepts will be showcased at a Design Celebration in January. The top three design concepts will be posted on the Well Dorado site (welldorado.org) for the community to vote and determine the winner. The winning design student/team will be given the opportunity to work with an architect/contractor to take their design from concept to reality. The parklet will be installed on Main Street in the City of Placerville in May 2017 via a ribbon cutting ceremony. The parklet is temporary, will occupy one parking space and will be installed until October 1st 2017. Eligible Applicants: All El Dorado County High School Students are encouraged to apply. You may apply individually or as a team. There is no limit on team size. You must submit one design per application. There is no limit on the number of applications a student/team can submit. Scholarship/Reward: The winning student/team will receive a $250.00 prize. Submission Requirements: Parklet applications must be submitted by the submission deadline (see below) and include a complete application with detailed drawings (top view and side view). Design criteria: ● Must fit within a 7-by-14 foot parking space.
● Must contain, but not limited to, the following elements: seating, lighting, landscaping, bike
parking and art (art can either be installed or participatory).
● Must be American with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant.
● The parklet is temporary and needs to be designed with “Healthy Living” in mind.
● The parklet design and construction needs to be within the $5,000 budget.
● Must use high quality, durable materials capable of withstanding weather and a large amount of
public use.
● Safety and access for all users must be taken into consideration.
● Because the parklet will be located in a parallel parking space, the parklet design must include
substantial planters, guardrails or other barrier structures that can protect occupants and
withstand light vehicular impact. The protective structures must be on the street side and both
ends of the parklet.
● The parklet design must maintain a minimum five-foot clear pedestrian through zone from the
sidewalk to allow pedestrians to access the parklet.
● Advertising, logos, or other branding is prohibited.
Please note that your Parklet design may need to be modified to meet City requirements. The submissions will be assessed according to the following criteria:

The budget for the parklet design and construction is $5,000 (approximate construction cost for a conservative design using some repurposed materials is $2,000). REQUIRED PARKLET DESIGN DOCUMENTATION
To complete your application packet, please attach the following design perspective documentation. Included in the packet are sample design drawings (The images shown on the next page are examples only. It is NOT required to use a computer program to design your parklet and will NOT be given priority.) You may use the templates on page 7 and 8 to submit your drawings.
● Top-view Drawing: ▪ This is a top-view drawing of your parklet design and should include: various elements in the
design; different materials to be used; your color scheme, plant types and/or species to be used; parklet dimensions; ADA access point and furniture accommodation.
▪ This drawing should also show the parklet footprint in relation to the surrounding streetscape context.
● Angle-view Drawing: ▪ This is an angle-view drawing of your parklet design and should include: parklet’s height, width,
depth and position in relation to its surroundings.
