What does it mean to be anactive member of

an

organization like BA?sometimes think that a lot of usassume that being an 'activemember* means holding office, being a member of a committee,or attending the monthly dinnermeetings.. That's all true: that isall part of what 4 means to beactively committed to somethinglike CCBA. But I think that thereis yet another point to beconsidered under the term"active member*.That is, that, in CCBA as anyorganization, it is vitallyimportant for the health andgeneral welfare of the group tospeak out. No organizationoperates perfectly; and if CCBAis to move toward its goals andfunction in the best interests ofits members, those membersmust voice their opinions andconcerns publicly. No matterwhat it is: a new idea; asuggestion that you may havefor accomplishing something in amore effective way; creativeand constructive criticism oreven a compliment for some jobwell done; your thoughts arealways welcome and can domuch to help CCBA to achieveits main purpose, that ofsupporting and promoting thelesbianigay businesses ofSoutheastern Wisconsin, whichin turn strengthens the whole of.Ihe lesbian/gay community.Within CCBA the opportunities to

speak out and be heard aremany, varied, and easilyaccessible. For example, anyCCBA member can attend anyBoard meeting simply byinforming the President 24hours in advance. The times andplaces of these monthlymeetings are widely dissem-inated throughout themembership; and should youwish to attend, you are alwayswelcomeThere are other ways, as well'.lf your concern is relevant to aparticular committee, contactthe chair or co-chair. She or hewill be glad to hear from you.The same goes for your At-Large Representative, They toowill be happy to have youexpress your opinion. In considering the meaning ofactive membership, them is onething, [ think, that we should allkeep in mind.. That is, that in anorganization where membersare expressing themselvespublicly, there inevitably isgoing to be controversy_ Whilesome may view this as anegative thing, I don't think thatit necessarily need be. As longas controversy is not secretive, and occurs without acrimony -

certainly an ideal • with eachperson engaged in the debateremembering the good of thegroup as a whole, t is evidenceof constructive activity, theopposite of apathy, a positivegood. CCBA is doing much andhas much more to do_ In this, while there should be a basicunderlying harmony of purposewhich is to move theorganization ahead, completeharmony cannot be expected andperhaps, in a vital group, is notdesirable., After all, the onlything in iota] harmony with itsenvironment is a corpse. The future of CCBA looks bright:but that future can only beachieved if you help. Let Us hearram you: for you as an active

member are the most importantasset CUBA has.

Spring Green Camp-ing Trip Sold Out

While there, they will seethe American Players' production ofHamlet and attend a party at the Lodgefollowing the play. With space limited to 23 people, othermembers and their guests are welcome tojoin the group's activities by arrangingtheir own accornodations in the area andpurchasing Hamlet tickets on their own. This popular event is an annual sellout. Those wishing to go in 1987 are remindedto make their reservations early once theinitial announcement is made.

Question of the Month:In What Ways Would You Like

to See The NewsleiterImproved?

Frank Stenson"I would like to see our business membersinterviewed on how they started theirbusinesses, what mistakes they made, what they vvourd do differently and howthey got to where they are now,'

Mason Sherwood"The Nevvsletter could be improved byadding a national news summary coveringlegislative issues that relate to lesbiansand gays. Perhaps columns by more Boardmembers and committee heads discussingproblems and issues of CCBA,"

Sally 9Netnam"I am generally pleased with TheNewsletter. More information aboutindividual members and a listing of newmembers (if they would agree) would bewelcome. Also, more state and nationallegislative news as it affects thelesbian/bay community."

Jan Hill. 1 1 feel that The Newsletter is very good, except that some articles could be printedmore currently. More positive news onlesbian/gay health issues. especiallyAIDS medical updates, would bebeneficial."

THE GENTLE ART OF

VERBAL SELF-DEFENSEDr. Suzette Haden Elgin; Prentice-Hail, hard coven 310pp; $12.95hard cover, $6.95 trade paperback.

Do you know when you are beingverbally abused? No. not just be-ing called names or shouted at, butsubtly abused: like when someonewhose opinion is important to yousays "Honey, if you really loved meyou wouldn't go bowling" or "Even

an assistant manager should beable to understand this procedure, darling" (notice where the accentsare). Each of these contains non-stated presuppositions which canhurt, and make you feel guilty forhurting besides_ ["I can't under-stand why I feel so stupid when I'm

with heriirri. S/he is always so con-siderate. There must be somethingwrong with mel. These were verbal attacks just assurely as if they had said out loud,"you don't love me because there issomething you like to do without methere" or "since it doesn't takemuch intelligence to be an assistantmanager you should feel guilty andstupid for not understanding."

From reading The Gentle Art ofVerbal Sell-Defense l learned that Iam a verbal abuser of those peoplewho are dearest to me. FortunatelyI also learned from Dr. Elgin's bookhow I can learn to be less abusive inthe future (besides just thinking outwhat I will be saying before I needto say it.] From reading this book Irealized that there are productiveways of coping when my boss isbeing verbally manipulative: concen-trate on the presupposition ratherthan just on what was said aloud;remain calm; and look relaxed.Society teaches men and women toverbally attack in different man-ners, so there is a chapter devotedto each gender and coping with itsattacks and defenses. Men aretaught early in life that verbal con-frontation games are just a part oftheir career activities. Women, onthe other hand, play for keeps andtend to say what they mean with nobandying about (this is noted as oneof the reasons why men don'tunderstand women).Throughout the book there are exer-cises and workbook assignments toimprove your offense as well asyour defense. Each lesson is briefand is fully explained for ease ofcomprehension.Although Dr. Elgin states that thisbook is a manual to teach you verb-al judo (p_3), I feel that it is morelike instruction in aikido or tai chiin that the exercises make you feelgood just practicing them, and youdon't need an "attacker" to usethem in your daily life.So the next time someone one saysto you "don't you even care aboutoor say *no" and find out whathappens. Enticing Smiles: CCBAis DentistsWhat do Bartley Bell, John Seaduto, Michael Bernklau, and Craig Larrabeehave in common, besides being DDS's? How about the fact that they have allbeen graduated from 'Marquette's School of Dentistry! When the average person thinks of the dentist, a smile does not come uponhell-(bis face. Still, without our dental professionals. there would certainlybe more gummy smiles apparent in COSA. Years ago, people were -deathlyafraid to come to a dentist," stated one of our oral engineers; but since thennew equipment and new ways to make dental work more satisfying foreveryone have been developed. When asked, '"What are some of the best things about living and being aprofessional in the Milwaukee area?", Bart stated, "Not only doesMilwaukee have a very good selection of cultural events, but it is a citythat really cares about its future." Mike and Craig, partners in life for 5years as well as partners in practice, said, 'Milwaukee is a very clean'small town' city with relative affordability in housing and entertainmentWe are especially impressed that we live in such a relatively enlightened, progressive state." John, echoing his peers, said, 'the quality of lifeavailable in Milwaukee is very high, if one wishes to partake of it; and theprofessional standards here are generally very good.' He later added, "Thestrides which CCBA has made to promote the growth and integrity ofmember businesses should engender respect in the straight and gaycommunities,"Asked for the most important professional advice that they could give toour members, the responses could be summarized as: 1) Learn to reallycare about your own total health as well as the quality of your life; 2) Cometo see a dentist regularly; don't wait until it hurts, as by that time it maybe too late; 3) Be responsible about the appointments you make: be there ontime; 4) Pay all dental bills on time; and 5) Learn correct techniques of oralcare (brushing and flossing properly) that will improve and maintain thehealth of the soft tissues around the teeth. Doing this will prevent thedevelopment of periodontal disea.se.Our dentists are small business people. They work hard to develop a goodpractice, to serve their total client base. Their work is delicate and verysensitive, especially in light of the fact that so many people are still afraidof dentists. Many of them are involved in many ways in our totalcommunity. Some serve on organization boards, others volunteer to help onspecial activities; and all of them pitch In and help take care of our sistersand brothers who cannot handle the cost of dental work. There is noreimbursement for this volunteer labor and equipment these people -Share,

These people know what they are doing and do it well: and we should beproud of their high calibre of professionalism.
