Technology: Impact on our lives
“Don Knezek, CEO of the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE ), says students not only learn differently now but that the world they inhabit today is so radically different that educators would be “silly” not to keep up with the changes” (MINERS, 2009, p. 1).
Technology: The Investment
In theory, as technology has enhanced, in way or another, the lives of people, it should have a similar impact on the educational process
Decision = Invest in Technology Outcomes = Better Life !
Technology: What went WRONG!“Over and over throughout the report,
the research points to the central idea that how the technology is used predicts its effect. For example, if an interactive whiteboard is used by the teacher the same way the chalkboard was used to illustrate a lecture, then . there is no difference. If technology is used for its entertainment value or to use up available time, no value can be expected” (Loertscher, 2009, p. 48).
Technology: Myths
The teacher becomes a better teacher Students learn more when they learn
from computers. “kids love to use computers--so they
must be learning” Increased use of technology in
classrooms will inevitably bring systemic school reform
Computers can deliver the content
Technology: The Need!
Students of today need to be equipped with the 21st century skills and knowledge
“After all, as students are expected to learn more complex and analytical skills in preparation for work and life in the “21st century global economy,” teachers in turn must be expected to teach in ways that develop those higher order thinking and performance skills, experts say”
(MINERS, 2009, p. 1).
Technology: Current practices
A recent survey of computer applications used by K–12 students indicates that:
78% of the students spend time playing games in school
6% of the high school students reported using spreadsheets or databases

Technology: In the workplace
“Employers require their employees to use productivity tools such as word processing, spreadsheets, databases, e-mail, and personal information managers. Individuals in the workplace are using computers as a tool, whereas educators generally tend to think of computers as an instructional delivery device—something to replace the teacher, much like Skinner’s teaching machine” (Morrison and Deborah, 2005,)
Technology: The Change!
The type of computer you have does not matter. How many of us really need a computer with a 2.2-gigahertz processor when we can barely type 27 words a minute.
Educators need to focus on computer operations (skills and knowledge)

Creates problems that require the student to manipulate data
Utilizes multiple learning resources

Teacher as facilitator:
No longer the main source of information
Asks directed questions
Models problem-solving processes and technical tasks
Provides necessary scaffolding for students

Teacher as manager: Plans a viable rotation schedule
Provides a multidimensional learning environment
Encourages students to solve problems
Finds solutions to technical problems
