THE SLOVAK EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM:
The Educational System in Slovakia is divided into 6 levels of education:
- Level 1 - Pre-primary education- Level 2 - Primary education - Level 3 - Lower secondary
education- Level 4 - Secondary education- Level 5 - Post-secondary
education- Level 6 - Tertiary education
PRE-PRIMARY EDUCATION is provided in Kindergartens or Nurseries
for children of the age 3-6
PRIMARY EDUCATION AND LOWER SECONDARY EDUCATION
Education is compulsory for students between 6-15.
Is provided at Primary Schools
For students from the age of 6 to 15
PRIMARY SCHOOL IS DIVIDED INTO 2 STAGES:
Primary School First Stage 1-4 th grade
Primary School Second Stage 5-9 th grade
SECONDARY EDUCATION
Is provided at Secondary Schools
For students from the age 15-19
Secondary vocational education is
compulsory until 16 years
Secondary Schools are divided into:
Gymnasium
Secondary Specialized School / Conservatory
Secondary Vocational School
SECONDARY VOCATIONAL EDUCATION 3-year Secondary Vocational
School/Apprentice Training Centre at the age 16-18
4-year secondary Vocational School at the age 16-19
2-year Post-secondary study at the age 18-20
SECONDARY VOCATIONAL SCHOOL
provides the complete general and vocational secondary education
prepares students for occupations requiring higher level of vocational education and for study at universities
Certificate awarded- School Leaving Certificate
for students from 15 to 19
POST-SECONDARY EDUCATION
is provided at Secondary Vocational Schools after
finishing the study at Secondary Vocational scholl
provides general and vocational secondary education
prepares students for occupations requiring higher level
of vocational education and for study at universities
Certificate awarded- School Leaving Certificate
for students from 18
SCHOOL TIMETABLE
33 lessons a week 5 days a week. 3-year course- 1 week of theory at
school, 1 week of vocational training. 4-year course- The first and second
year- 4 days of theory at school, 1 day of vocational training each week. From the third year 3 days of theory at school, 2 days of vocational training each week.
PLACE OF PRACTICAL TRAINING
Practical vocational training performs by:
In workshops at schools entrepreneurs or companies that have
a contract with the school
FINAL EXAMS
The School Leaving Exams are in May or June:
Slovak language, foreign language, theoretical part of the vocational exam, practical part of the vocational exam.
The Final Exams in June: written and practical part according to the specialisation
WHAT POSSIBILITIES DOES THE EXAM OFFER
The School Leaving Exam enables students to continue at universities
The Final Exam – prepares for the profession, they can continue at Post-secondary study.

1- the highest grade 2 3 4 5- the lowest grade (failed)
SCHOOL BREAKS AND DAYS OFF DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR
Autumn holidays- 2 days (November) Christmas holidays – 2 weeks
(December, January) Spring holidays- 1 week (February,
March) Easter holidays 2 days (April) Summer holidays -2 months (July,
August)
HOW TO GET A PASS AT CERTAIN SUBJECTS
Students are assessed continuously- oral exams, written exams, practical exams. There is also a half-year assessment in January and in June, when they get school reports
