A 3-1 match erased the Stars’ two-goal lead after the first leg, then prevailed after Jeff Attinella made three saves during penalty kicks after the Rowdies held on through the entire extra time period despite playing a man down. Pressure paid off for Tampa Bay in the 24th minute, as Carl Cort turned home a rebound after Stars goalkeeper Matt VanOekel had done well off his line to block Keith Savage’s shot from 14 yards out. The goal made it 1-0 on the night in Tampa Bay’s favor, but the Stars still led on aggregate. The Stars best chances came from set pieces, and Simone Bracalello brought a diving save out of Attinella with a driven free kick from 30 yards. The rebound fell to Stars striker Amani Walker, but an awkward bounce forced him into a difficult shot that came to nothing. The second half started with the same pressure from the Rowdies, and they got the equalizing goal right away. From another Mulholland corner kick, former Stars back Andres Arango nodded a header down, which Keith Savage turned in at the back post to send the crowd of 6,208 into a frenzy. A minute later, it was quiet. Miguel Ibarra carried a ball from the right wing through the central channel, before laying a perfectly weighted through ball to substitute Lucas Rodriguez who hammered his first touch past Attinella into the side netting, lifting the Stars into a 3-2 aggregate lead despite the 2-1 deficit on the night. It was a perfect moment for Rodriguez to score his first goal of the season, making him the first player to score in multiple NASL Championships after his goal in last season’s triumph over Fort Lauderdale. The Rowdies wouldn’t go away, though, and leading scorer Daniel Antoniuk came off the bench to snatch an 85th minute goal that brought the series level on aggregate. Ambersley beat VanOekel to a ball bouncing in the penalty area and looped the ball over the Stars goalkeeper for Antoniuk to tap in. Ibarra could have ended things moments later and put an exclamation mark on his rookie season, Attinella was the hero for the Rowdies after Rodriguez played Ibarra through with a ball over the top. The Stars rookie winger hit a powerful right footed shot, but the Rowdies goalkeeper dove to his right to save, and the Stars couldn’t find a way to get a shot off on the rebound. As the game neared 30 minutes of extra time, the Stars were handed a man-advantage after Tampa midfielder Shane Hill’s reckless challenge on Bracalello. Bracalello controlled a ball on the wing and cut away from Hill, who continued at full speed into the challenge, taking Bracalello out and earning a straight red card. The Stars couldn’t make the numerical advantage count in the extra period, though, and the match moved to a shootout to determine the 2012 NASL Champions. Attinella—as he was all season en route to an NASL Best XI selection— was the hero again, making a save to his right on Devin Del Do’s shot before going left to save from Kyle Altman and Rodriguez. Tampa Bay’s 4-2 PK shootout victory came as Attinella made three saves in five attempts on the Stars. Del Do, Altman and Rodriguez were all stoppped by Attinella, while Matt Van Oekel made a lone save for Minnesota on Carl Cort’s attempt. By NASL

On a Tuesday evening in mid-October FC Edmonton signed thirteen young players to amateur contracts as part of the club’s residency program at St. Joseph High School.

The players will go to school at St. Joe’s and train four times a week with FC Edmonton reserve team head coach Jeff Paulus and his newly appointed assistant Angelo Sestito.

“Angelo will be good for the young players because he’s already played at the level that they want to get to,” Paulus said, regarding his new assistant coach. “He’s proof that you can come out of Edmonton and achieve your dreams.”

FC Edmonton reserves will play an exhibition schedule against teams from the Alberta Major Soccer League, universities and colleges from across the province.

The contracts will ensure compensa-tion for the club in a player sale scenario,

whether it is done by FC Edmonton or any other club.

In addition to the player and coach signings, 2012 FC Edmonton reserve team product Aymar Sigue has accepted an offer to join the Vancouver Whitecaps FC Residency Program.

Sigue, a striker, had six goals in 14 games for the Junior Eddies in 2012 and received a call up to Canada’s U-15 squad, which played in the Copa Mexico De Naciones Sub-15 in June.

“Aymar has accepted an offer to join the Whitecaps’ residency program and we are not standing in his way,” said FCE general manager Tom Leip. “We would have offered him a second amateur contact but he decided to join the Whitecaps instead and we support his decision whole-heartedly.”

The reserve team will train during the winter months in preparation for competition in the spring.

This month, FC Edmonton is doing its part to bring light to men’s health issues. The club will be encouraging all Eddie fans, staff and players to sprout the best lip hair they can and raise much needed funds in the process.

During November each year, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men’s faces, in Canada and around the world. With their “Mo’s”, these men raise vital funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and male mental health initiatives.

“Having an organization like FC Edmonton engaged in Movember, growing Mo’s and supporting is incredible,” said Jesse Hayman, community development manager for Movember Canada. “They have an ability to reach out to a big network of supporters and not only engage them in Movember by asking them to grow, but also to influence them to make healthy choices. Organizations like FC Edmonton lend a massive hand in helping us change the face of men’s health!”

On Movember 1st, guys register at Movember.com with a clean-shaven face. For the rest of the month, these selfless and generous men, known as Mo Bros, groom, trim and wax their way into the annals of fine moustachery. Supported by the women in their lives, Mo Sistas, Movember Mo Bros raise funds by seeking out sponsorship for their Mo-growing efforts.

Mo Bros effectively become walking, talking billboards for the 30 days of November. Through their actions and words, they raise awareness

by prompting private and public conversation around the often ignored issue of men’s health.

At the end of the month, Mo Bros and Mo Sistas celebrate their gallantry and valor by either throwing their own Movember party or attending one of the infamous Gala Partés held around the world by Movember, for Movember.

On Oct. 20, FC Edmonton players and staff were invited to Storm the Stage at the Jubilee Auditorium.

Edmonton Opera presented the annual party on the set of Aida at the Jubilee Auditorium. The event included live performances by hip-hop fusion artist Mitchmatic and alternative folk trio F&M and Edmonton Opera Chorus members.

“What a great evening!” exclaimed FCE goalkeeper Lance Parker, who graced the stage that night. “It’s so nice to get out and experience a little culture in Edmonton. I’ve been a fan of the arts all my life and the Edmonton Opera did a fantastic job with this event.”

Parker and his date were even able to take in the actual performance a few days later.

Music wasn’t the only art featured at the Storm the Stage event. Thread Hill, a local clothing boutique, held a fashion show of operatic clothing and the Duchess Bake Shop providing some tantalizing treats to the folks on the ancient Egyptian set.

“It was an honour to be able to contribute to Edmonton Opera in this way,” said FCE owner Tom Fath, who graciously donated the set for the production. “Edmonton Opera is trying to attract a new generation of fans and I think the Storm the Stage event is a perfect way of encouraging younger people to take in the amazing shows that they put on. It’s our pleasure to work with Sandra Gajic (Edmonton Opera’s CEO) and the rest of the opera staff.”

The North American Soccer League today released the names of the players selected to the 2012 NASL Best XI team and FC Edmonton’s Paul Hamilton made the list this season.

The NASL’s Best XI was chosen by a vote of the coaches of the eight teams that played in the 2012 season.

San Antonio’s Pablo Campos, Fort Lauderdale’s Walter Restrepo and Carolina’s Nick Zimmerman were all unanimous choices for the team, who are listed below in alphabetical order by position.

ForWArdS Mark Anderson, Fort lauderdale Strikers

The Strikers’ forward recorded 11 goals and 3 assists in 1788 minutes of action during the 2012 season. ryan Cochrane, San Antonio Scorpions

Cochrane, a two-time MLS Cup Champion with the Houston Dynamo logged 2,276 minutes this season in defense for NASL Regular Season Champion Scorpions. The Portland, Oregon native scored a goal and added three assists during the season. Cochrane anchored a backline that conceded just 27 goals this season, the lowest total in the league.

eddies will Face VancouVer whitecaps Fc at commonwealth on april 24

FC Edmonton’s Shaun Saiko and Vancouver Whitecaps Gershon Koffie May 2, 2012 at Commonwealth Stadium

FC Edmonton

Following the Montreal Impact and Vancouver Whitecaps’ final regular season games at the end of October, the Amway Canadian Championship match-ups were decided.

FC Edmonton will face a familiar foe on April 24 at Commonwealth Stadium. The Whitecaps finished ahead of the Impact and Toronto FC in the MLS standings, which cemented the semi-final games.

The match-ups were the same for the 2012 championships and the Eddies fell short to the ‘Caps over two legs, despite playing some of the best soccer of the season.

Last year, the Whitecaps travelled to Edmonton for the first leg and went home with a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Eric Hassli and Atiba Harris. The

following week the Eddies travelled to the coast and played a great road game, taking the lead early off a Yashir Pinto header but ended up falling 3-1 in the match.

Toronto FC dispatched Montreal in the other semi and ended up beating the Whitecaps in the final.

The semifinals will take place on April 24, 2013 (first leg) and May 1, 2013 (second leg), with the ACC final series set for May 15, 2013 (first leg) and May 29, 2013 (second leg).

The 2013 Voyageurs Cup winner will represent Canada in the 2013-14 edition of the CONCACAF Champions League, which in turn, will determine CONCACAF’s representative for the 2014 FIFA Club World Cup in Morocco.

San Jose's Chris Wondolowski probably locked up the 2012 MLS Golden Boot as the top scorer in the league months ago, but it become official on October 28 after the league's regular-season finale finished.

Wondolowski finished with 27 goals for the year, tying Roy Lassiter's 16-year-old single-season record. Wondo struck his 27th and final goal of the season on a penalty kick in a 1-1 draw away to the Portland Timbers on Saturday October 27.

This is the second Golden Boot in three years for Wondolowski. He also won it in 2010, when he scored 18 goals. In 2011, he tied for the league lead in goals with 16, but lost out on the Golden Boot to D.C. United's Dwayne De Rosario because DeRo had more assists.

Five other players have led the league in goals in history: Lassiter (1996, T-1999) Stern John (1998, T-1999), Carlos Ruiz (2002, T-2003), Taylor Twellman (T-2003, 2005), and Jeff Cunningham (2006, 2009).

Wondolowski has scored 61 goals in the last three years, and now has 68 career goals in league play, ranking him 20th in league history.
