As Glenn Fry said "The heat is on” and looks set to remain for a while longer. I hopeyou survived the deluge on Friday evening, 20th July? Lots of reports of light waterdamage, but fortunately noting worse! Advice issued by our weather departmenthere at the EV, is do as little as possible during the hottest parts of the day, for thestaff here, that’s from 7.30am to about 5.30pm, when the pub opens! Our head ofall things medical gives the advice to drink plenty of fluids including as much Beer,Wine & Cider, should be no problem for the good folks of Ecton.
Now back to our ‘favourite’ topic, fly tipping. We have now logged 21 requests toNorthampton Borough Council to clean up the Crow Lane End of Lower Ecton lane.Despite promises nothing has happened and I don’t think it will. So myself & Ian areplanning to clean up and send them the bill! If you want to join us for a couple ofhours of S**t Shovelling, then let me know. We plan to do a couple of Saturdaymornings when the weather is cooler.Wendy

Ecton Parish CouncilMany thanks to those who took part Speedwatch. It's not much fun getting upearly to then be abused by drivers using the village as a rat run. Thank you verymuch to our volunteers. Unfortunately no speeding vehicles were logged as thepresence of parked cars does slow the traffic down.On that subject it really does help if vehicles park on the road and not the path as itmakes cars slow down and allows people to use the footpaths. There is anawareness of the problems that villages face when they are used as a rat run. Weare continuing to try and enlist some help with an issue that now seems to beabout volume of traffic at peak times rather than speeding vehicles. The next Parish Council meeting will be on the Tuesday 18th September at 7.30pm.At the Village Hall. All are welcome to attend. You can obtain a full copy of thelatest Parish Council Minutes. Email: [email protected]

Rector’s Letter August 2018
“May the love of the crossThe power of the ResurrectionThe presence of the Living Lord
Be with you always”
Those words are on the back of my Confirmation Certificate which I received at myConfirmation on 7th December 1978. It was at that service when I first heard Godcalling me to ministry and so for me Confirmation holds a very important place in myfaith journey and it is always a joy to prepare and welcome candidates for this holysacrament.Confirmation marks the point in a Christian’s life when the promises made atbaptism, usually on their behalf by godparents, is affirmed by themselves and acommitment is made to live a life following the teachings of Jesus. The affirmation of the baptismal promises is made, after a time of preparation, at aspecial service through prayer and the laying on of hands by a Bishop. At the servicethe church asks God to give each candidate power through the Holy Spirit to enablethem to live a life of faith, with the Bishop saying the words over each candidate“Confirm O Lord your servant with your Holy Spirit”.Confirmation is a time of rejoicing and celebration and marks a distinctive momentin a candidate’s faith journey. It is also a time of deeper understanding ofCommunion and after Confirmation candidates are able to receive the bread andwine. On Sunday 14th October at 5pm there will be a Benefice Confirmation Service atGreat Doddington church. (There will be no 11.15am service that day)So far we have five candidates and if you would like to be confirmed this year it isnot too late. The preparation course for children starts on Sunday 9th September4pm-5pm at Great Doddington church. A course for adults will be put in place onceadult numbers are known. You can do the course and then decide if the time is rightfor you to be confirmed or not. If you have not been baptised that is not a problem, baptism can take place, after preparation, either before or during the service and infact I was not baptised as a baby and so was baptised on the Sunday before myConfirmation. If you would like more information on being baptised and/or confirmed, or indeed ifyou would like to talk about any aspect of the Christian faith please do contact me.Yours in Christ,Revd. Church Finance and Building Update
This year we have been fundraising for two reasons. Following our five yearlyinspection last September a lot of work was identified in order to keep thechurch watertight. The bulk of this relates to the Chancel roof. We have sent an appeal out tothe village for funds and we have once again been surprised and humbled bythe warm response this has received. Including Gift Aid we have now raisedover £22,000, an astonishing amount! Secondly we appealed for regularmonthly income. To date we have achieved over £200 of our £300 target. Those of you whohave donated for the building and/or the running costs will be receiving apersonal letter of thanks very soon. We’d like to express our very grateful thanks to all those who have made afinancial commitment and to those who have run and helped withfundraising events to support the church. The most recent event, the PhotoExhibition raised over £400.The necessary preparatory tasks for this work on the church are underway. Our architect is currently producing specifications for the work so that wecan go out to tender – in order to do this he has to liaise with the LocalPlanning Office, Historic England and the Peterborough Diocese – not tomention the bat survey that needs to be conducted prior to work starting.Until we get to the tender process it is unclear whether we have enoughfunds in place. However, once we do get a clearer picture of costs we shallbe applying to relevant grant making bodies (including Northampton HistoricChurches Trust) and we are usually able to reclaim VAT from CentralGovernment. There is some way to go yet but we shall keep you advised of progress. Thechurchyard also has required work – a tree survey revealed that one of theLime trees by the North Gate was rotten and needed to be removed.Additionally, several other trees have required attention to keep them safe. This work is now complete - apart from the trunk of the Lime which needssome heavy lifting gear to shift it. This should be removed very soon. The tape around the trunk is there for a reason – the ground around thestump is unstable and dangerous, so please do keep clear.

Jude”s Memorial ServiceOn behalf of Thomas,Sarah, Ben, Bill (and of course Jude) may I take thisopportunity to publicly express our heartfelt gratitude and thanks to all whoattended the memorial service for Jude. The response from this wonderful community was absolutely brilliant. It was afantastic example of the community spirit that exists in Ecton. The way communitycame together publicly to celebrate the life of Jude was truly moving andastounding. As a family we were completely overwhelmed by the good wishes support and lovedisplayed towards us on what was a very sad occasion. It was also great to see the beautiful church full to capacity for the service. It was also pleasing that to see so many people joined us in the village hallafterwards to chat about Jude and raise the a glass or two in her memory.I really cannot put into words how much respect and gratitude we as a family havefor all those involved in the preparation and serving of the food in the village hall.It was a remarkable occasion one of which I am certain Jude would have fullyapproved. It is impossible to express how grateful the family are for all the hard work, effortand organisation that contributed so much to making the day so special. To allinvolved in the village hall…. your efforts were really appreciated and contributedgreatly to making the day so special. it was a great team effort and you are allsuperstars. I just cannot thank you all enoughYou can all take a great deal of satisfaction from knowing that you are responsiblefor playing a huge part in making the day unforgettable.Once again thank you Ecton!
