Here we go with my second issue and it's a bumper one! You have respondedmagnificently to my request for articles, so much so that we have some extra pagesthis month. Even by Ecton standards, it's been a busy month, with Blues, BBQ's,Trains and Planes…… to name just some of this issues topics.

You have also sent me a lot of photos of the events this month, it's seems a shamenot to share them, so the editing team have crated a digital extended version, notonly with extra content, but in colour! I will endeavour to do this each month. If youwould like a copy, please send me you email address to [email protected] will also be a full colour print-out available to look at in the Three horseshoesand the Church.

Keep the content coming, more letters please, articles by villagers on topics of yourchoice, short stories etc and as many photos as you can.

Don’t forget the fairy door competition as well.

Playing FieldWe are still trying to raise funds to complete the refurbishment of the playingfield. We have made an application for grant funding and hope that we will besuccessful. We have recently received a generous donation from SywellAerodrome, which will help with our fundraising but we still need about£28,000! Thank you for all your support, please keep it coming.

Parish CouncilThe Parish Council meets 6 times a year, it is a public meeting and you arewelcome to attend. The agenda for the meetings will be displayed on thevillage notice board and the minutes of the meetings will be published on thevillage website. If you want to see a copy of the minutes the Clerk, ShirleyWong will be happy to send you a copy. Her telephone number is 01604700691 or email [email protected]

We will use the magazine to highlight issues as they arise and we hope topublish details of planning applications as they arise. This might becomplicated as the turnaround time for applications is so quick we could easilymiss the magazine deadlines.

You will have seen some improvements to the road surface in the High Street. In addition the Highways Agency will be doing some traffic and speedmonitoring so that they can advise us about traffic management. Thanks tothose of you who have contacted Maggie Mulvey about your concerns, we willfeed your comments into the discussions as we move forwards.

We are constantly raising concerns about the fly tipping in Ecton Lane andhave enlisted the support of our new Councillor Jenny Bone. We will keep youinformed of progress.

The EGO’s recently enjoyed an outing to Sheringham and Holt. We just aboutmanaged to avoid the rain (sorry Donald!). 28 of us travelled by coach andtrain and had a great time in Norfolk.

Thanks to Denise for some lovely photos of Sherringham and Holt.

The Ego’s enjoyed Lunch in Sheringham followed by a train ride to Holt with timefor a good look around the shops and coffee between showers.

The North Norfolk Railway (NNR) – also known as the "Poppy Line" – is aheritage steam railway in Norfolk, England, running between the coastal townof Sheringham and Holt.It cuts through the countryside to the east of Weybourne with views of itswindmill and passes through the well preserved country station which alsohouses a locomotive shed together with a carriage maintenance andrestoration centre.

The line, which is just over 5 miles (8.0 km) long, once formed part of theMidland and Great Northern Joint Railway. Work on rebuilding the line startedin 1965, and on 4 June 1967, two steam locomotives were delivered. The operating company, North Norfolk Railway plc, was launched in 1965following the granting of two Light Railway Orders. In May 1973, the railway was the scene of filming for the episode "The RoyalTrain" of the popular TV programme Dad's Army. The railway won the 'Independent Railway of the Year' award in 2006.

From the Rector,

Those who are old enough to remember the tv series ‘The Two Ronnies’ willwell remember their closing catch phrase: “And now, it’s goodnight from me … and it’s goodnight from him”. Utter nonsense of course, but I loved thatshow which is quoted to have been ‘possibly the most robust long-runningsketch show ever made and certainly one of the most successful’. Of coursejust remembering like this and quoting it betrays my age, which leads me to why I havementioned it this month. This time ‘it’s goodnight from me’ as this is the last time I shall writefor our magazines in Great Doddington and Ecton. I have served at Great Doddington andWilby for the past twelve years, and the last eight at Ecton and have loved being here. Thethree churches are very different in some ways, yet united in a common love for God and adetermination to see the community of Christian people grow in our area. There have, ofcourse, been difficult times along the way as well as the very many good ones, but there is nodoubt that God has been with us in all of it and I take hosts of wonderful memories away withme into what I hope and expect will be a very active retirement – you don’t retire from being aChristian!

In my final assemblies at our three village schools I have recently concluded a series on God’samazing rescue of His people from slavery in Egypt back in the days of Moses. In that finalsession we were looking at how things would be very different for the Israelites when theysettled in their Promised Land. All those who had originally left Egypt had died on the way soall those who entered the Land had only known a life of desert wandering. I linked that with‘new things’ for the children as some move to new schools in September and others to newclasses, and we discussed the knowledge that new things can be both exciting and scary at thesame time. But it’s o.k. to feel scared – grownups do too sometimes; it’s what we do withthose scary feelings that matters. We are all entering a time of new things at the end of thismonth, I as I enter the world of retirement and the three parishes as they begin a few monthsof vacancy with no rector, followed by the coming of my successor, whoever he or she may be,and doubtless getting used to new ways of doing things.

In all these things we need always to hang on to the certainty that God is with is through it all, just as He was with the Israelites in the desert and as they moved into a more settled life inIsrael under the leadership of Joshua. He will be with me as I get used very different routinesand look for new ways to serve Him, and He will be with the three village and churchcommunities here too. We all need to learn to trust and look to Him for guidance. As I have sooften prayed at the beginning of meetings, ‘Please save us from our own good ideas andinstead show us Your perfect way’.

And so, finally, ‘it’s goodnight from me’ and God’s richest blessing to every one of our readers.

In Jesus,

Chris Pearson

Chris Pearson is retiring…………….Chris, our minister at Ecton Church, retires at the end of August.

The last service that he will officiate at, is here in Ectonon Sunday 30 August at 11am.This will be a joint service with the parishes of Wilby and Gt Doddington. After the service we shall say farewell to Chris, and his wife Jo, over abring-and-share lunch where we also hope to make a presentation tothem.

If you would like to join us at the church for the service and lunch you will be mostwelcome. If you feel you would like to make a contribution towards a gift for Chrisand Jo please would you pass it to Nigel Bond (Treasurer), either in church,or at 34 West St Ecton.

tea and coffee on the first Saturday each month where

we take the opportunity to tidy up thechurchyard. In June and July we havehad a great team mowing, strimming andweeding. A special thankyou goes to theteam of people who have given up theirtime, provided equipment and workedvery hard to keep the churchyard tidy.

On Saturday 1 August there will also be an opportunity to meet with members of

the PCC to discuss the vision for the future of our village church. Please come and share your thoughts and ideas. If you are unable to join us but wish to share

On Saturday 27 June many of us were fortunate to enjoy a fantastic afternoonand evening at the Village Hall listening to British Blues legend, John Verity andhis band, formerly guitarist with the band Argent from 1973-76

All this while enjoying a Hog Roast, Candy Floss & Nuts with Americanthemed treats and sweets for the kids along with a Bouncy Castle.

When Argent split up, he formed Phoenix with BobHenrit and Jim Rodford. He continues to gig continuouslythroughout the UK and overseas with the John VerityBand.

Also straight from Tennessee, Blues Master, Stacy Mitchhart thrilled us all withhis music, a real Nashville guitar legend in our little Village Hall!!!!

John Verity joined Stacy on stage during the evening to seal the Anglo-Americanextravaganza.

In 2003, Stacy Mitchhart received the 'Albert King Most Promising GuitaristAward' at the Blues Foundation's International Challenge in Memphis,Tennessee.

To top it off we were spoilt with a wonderful Red Bull Air Display

Unfortunately the pictures can not do it justice! The 20 minute display finale was anenormous Heart of White Smoke which you can see on this months front cover.

Thanks to the generosity of time and effort along with the great organizational skills ofAndrew & Sara, Claire & Colin, Dee & Ady and many others.

The profits of this event (which started life as a private party) have been kindlydonated to the Church and the Village Hall

Many thanks to Alistair MacRae and Nicky Buckley for additional photos of this greatevent.

The Fairy Door ChallengeSome homes have Flower Fairy’s, Tooth Fairy's, Laundry Fairy’s even FridgeFairy's, (although the last 2 usually go on strike when Mum and Dad go onholiday). What does a fairy door look like? It may be a drawing, a photographor made of natural materials or lollypop sticks, cardboard…..etc. I would guessthat the fairy door is rather small but then that is just an assumption, about thesame size as the “Ecton View” maybe! Or perhaps it looks like these:
