SUMMER ABOUT 2021
THE EAST YORKSHIRE CENTRE MAGAZINE
COPY DEADLINE FOR THE A.G.M. ABOUT IS
WEDS 8TH SEPTEMBER
2
EDITORIAL
Well hello everybody, my name’s June Norris and I am the new editor
of the About.
I would first of all like to thank Janice for the excellent job she has
done as editor over the last few years. I’m sure that we all wish her and
Richard all the best for the future.
I hope that I can count on all of you that have sent rally reports, jokes,
or any other articles over the years to continue to support the magazine
and if you haven't sent anything before, maybe this year is the time to
start.
It has however been another strange start to the year with all rallies and
events being cancelled until after Easter due to the Lockdown and the
Covid 19 restrictions. This therefore meant that there was not an Easter
edition. I am pleased that many of you have put pen to paper [or
emailed] to tell everyone about the Rallies you have been on. Hopefully
now that a great deal of people have received the vaccine things will be
able to get back to some sort of normal for the rest of the year. It will
be good to be able to enjoy a welcome cuppa and a ending Flag again.
Here’s wishing you all a very healthy and
enjoyable time rallying this summer.
Bist Woshes
June.
Further copies of the “About” are available to view/print
on the Centre website

CHAIRMAN'S CHAT
Well it looks like we are finally getting back to
some sort of normality and rallying again albeit not
as we know it, but nevertheless we are able to use
our caravans and meet fellow caravanners on the
rally field or visit family and friends off the rally
field.
It is very difficult getting our head around the guidelines that the
CAMC have given us when they don't meet the same guidelines that the
government have set out, but it is only for a few more weeks now and if
it keeps us all safe then let's stick to it.
Unfortunately the Celebration entertainment had to be cancelled but the
rally is still running as caravans on the field. Then we come to the 21st
of June when hopefully everything is lifted and rallies will start to be
back to normality as we used to be. Don't leave it too late to book the
rallies that you want to go on because rallies might be cancelled if there
is no one booked on or the other extreme is that they could be full and
you won't get on them.
The Bonfire rally will be the Spectacular show that we are used to, and
the Children's Christmas party will be back in full swing but don't
forget to book them in after the AGM it will be free again but we do
need names and ages.
I would like to thank Janice for all her hard work over the past few
years producing the About, and go on to thank June Norris for taking on
the role of editor of the About. Please send all your renditions to June
at: [email protected]. Apart from distributing a few
copies where possible it will also be put on the website for you to look
at.
For the moment please stay safe and carry on caravanning safely.
Dave

KATH’S KOLUMN
I’m sure we are all fed up of hearing “what a strange year it has
been”! I’m sure we are all looking forward to getting out and about
again on rallies properly!! I can’t wait to start selling the ‘tuck shop’
again and I have numerous cuddly toys to sell for the charity which
my daughters have been making through “lockdown”.
It has been a very busy year for me though, as Secretary and
Membership secretary, the communication through e-mails have
been vast. I do my best to circulate all the rules set out to keep us
safe and within the rules set out by the Government. They are not
always easy to follow or understand but they are there to keep us
safe.
I think people are looking to stay nearer home than going abroad as
the membership is going up rapidly weekly. Just out of interest the
current total is 1,221 members.
If you are a new member then welcome, if you want any
information on the Centre please don’t hesitate to get in touch and I
will do my best to get back to you promptly. Just to remind you all
that when you renew your Club Membership remember to contact
them to say that you want to be an East Yorkshire Member too, it is
not automatic. I do send out reminders to help you. If you are not a
member at the end of the year you will not be on the mailing list for
next year’s brochure.
Keep safe and well everyone, looking forward to seeing you on the
field.
Take care Kath

YOUR CENTRE NEEDS YOU ! !
In September at the A.G.M. Dave Young will be entering his final year as Chairman of our Centre and unless something changes I will replace him as Centre Chairman in 2022.
With that in mind I would like to share a few thoughts with you.
The Centre is run by a small committee and several rally marshals, all volunteers, who give up their own time to enable the Centre to function and us all to enjoy rallying. We have a membership of well over 1000 members so the percentage of members helping to run the Centre is very small.
We are looking for more members to assist with the running of the Centre and rallies and would ask you to consider how you could help, because without an influx of new committee members and rally marshals the
Centre could cease to function in a few years’ time.
Being a committee member basically involves attending a meeting for a couple of hours, once a month, to discuss Centre business and also to help out on 2 or 3 Centre rallies each year. If for any reason you cannot attend a meeting, well so be it, we all have other commitments.
Within the next couple of years we are also going to require a new Secretary because Kath will be retiring along with Dave and if you feel this is a task that you would like to consider you could shadow Kath for the next 12 months if you join the committee this September.
So, we are looking for additional committee members to assist the existing team and if you feel able to do so, have a word with any committee member for any further information you may require.
Denis works very hard to give us a varied and interesting rally programme but we are short of rally marshals, so again if you are interested have a word with Denis, Dave or me about being a rally marshal. You can maybe start as a co-marshal to find out what it is all about.
So please give this some serious thought because our Centre needs you to help us carry on progressing forward and if you do have any questions do not hesitate to talk to any committee member.

SOCIAL SECRETARYS RAMBLINGS! Hi Everyone, well it has been a strange year for us all with every Social event cancelled due to the virus, but let us hope this will change from now on. Only a couple of things left this year the 45+1 Birthday Celebration, all the entertainment has had to be cancelled we have however managed to organise a take away Pie and Peas from the Rugby Club for the Friday Night. The only other event is the Childrens Christmas Party at Woodmansey on Sunday 28th November,2021, look forward to seeing lots of children there. This will include entertainment plus a McDonalds Happy Meal, who could ask for anything more, it will be a great afternoon. Barry and I are looking forward to 2022, let us all hope we can have The Informal Dinner Dance at the Expanse at Bridlington, third time lucky as they say. All keep, safe and well, we look forward to seeing you on the rally fields Joan Baxter Social Secretary

Reedness.
The Half Moon Rally
Once again our centre member Lynn Clarkson has been very busy over
the lock down period.
Lynn has now knitted well over 100 teddies and has donated each one
to charity.
Paul, Andrew and Lynn marshalled the rally at Reedness.
A lovely rally with walks along the river Ouse, a nice flat field, with
plenty of good company. The sun
came out for the whole of the 4
days rally so we were able to sit
outside and enjoy some fresh air . .
. Social distancing allowed. After
being confined for so long indoors
it was a welcome rally.
Thank you Paul, Lynn and
Andrew for organising a great
time.
This photograph is just a sample
of the bright and beautiful teddies
Lynn has given to charity, all of them hopefully going to to loving
homes.
Thank you once again from Jean Baker

South Cliff Bridlington. It was great to be able to rally again, meet all our old friends and make
some new ones.
We had a good turn out for the weekend, nearly full for the week too,
some left on the Sunday and some joined us., 30 odd vans, plus some
from other centres.
The weather was absolutely perfect, so it was great to have people sitting
in little groups outside. There was a chilly wind, but if you got out of it,
it was lovely. Everyone said how they had enjoyed themselves.
The toilets were open but not the showers, but most of us stuck to using
our own facilities.
There is a nice walk into
Bridlington one way or to
Fraisthorpe the other; the
Cow Shed cafe was open, for
sitting outside, so a few did
that.
Saturday Fred Brian came to
join us, but he started feeling
ill, so John and Sue Dale took charge of the situation, we were very
grateful too. They had walked the dog during the day, so he looked after
the dog for us. An Ambulance was called, and as we suspected it was a
small stroke. They took him into HRH and his daughters were notified.
John took Fred’s caravan and car home the next day and handed the dog
over to the daughter. Then John was brought back to continue his week
with us.
Fred was kept in for a few days then discharged; he is improving slowly,
and getting lots of help now. We hope he makes a quick recovery.
We thank everyone for their support, and hope to carry on through the
summer with no more lockdowns.

Drax April 2021
Due to the Pandemic and we could not go inside and with no entertainment we had a lot of cancelations but the Rally must go on and so it did with 8 caravans, the weather was okay but cold we sat around outside on Friday night and had a bit of good banter and a cup coffee that looked like gin. And because there was nothing on, it called for shopping at Glasshoughton on Saturday and as I and the dogs were told to stop in the car, I laid back on the driver’s seat listening to music and dosed off to be awoken by the wonderful female Voices of the returning shoppers. Saturday evening the full Rally had booked at meal under the cover of outside gazebos it was a very good meal enjoyed by all, it became very cold so we called it a night, before I go, I would like on behalf of the Marshalls to thank you all for joining in. We are back in October with the normal (I hope) with D J Ken and
singer Ricky Graham
Sandra Christine and the good looking one.
Swinethorpe Rally.
Thanks to John, Sue, Jean and Ron for arranging this rally in a part of the country that we don’t normally visit. We arrived on Monday in the wind and the rain but we had no trouble setting up as the field is so flat and immaculate. The rest of the week was spent exploring the surrounding countryside including Woodall Spa which is well worth a visit.
Sue and Maurice Agar.
Sue and John Holroyd’s second holiday rally was well attended too, but
the weather was not as kind. We had good days and bad days, but most
folks still got about and found things to do and places to go. It started on a
Friday and finished on a Friday, so confused going home on a Friday
instead of a Sunday. I managed to get my second injection on Saturday at
Lincoln Showground, as we were over there when my doctors sent me an
15
appointment. So was pleased to be sorted and have no after affects
either.
Sunday we had a ride to Doddington Hall gardens, nice walk round and then sat outside the cafe. Lovely sunny day. Monday was a bad day, Tuesday not too bad, went to Brayford Caravan centre for a new kettle, we were surprised to see how many caravans had sold in the windows, not many not sold. Then to the garden centre for a walk round there, coffee and cake of cause. But then it rained so back to the van. Wednesday was sunny even if a chill in the wind, we went to Woodhall Spa, had a walk round grounds of the Pet Wood Hotel. Had lunch in the “Cafe in the Wood” then a walk round the shops etc. Had to have a rain shower when we got back, but not too bad. Thursday went into Newark, had a walk round, found a cafe in the Market area, had lunch, then a walk by the river and the castle. The sun was out but a chilly wind again, but got to see some of Newark. Friday started with sun so got the awning down, but we got showers too. We hope everyone enjoyed the new Rally site, it was a lovely flat field, plenty of space, fishing if you like that sort of thing and bike ride trails too, which some enjoyed very much. Three new ralliers joined us for the week too. See you all on a rally field soon we hope.
Sue and John Holroyd
Belton 30/04/ 2021.
Had a wonderful weekend apart from the weather . Not as many vans
as we’d have liked on this first rally in Belton but I must say the
people of the village welcomed us and would like us to return. it is a
lovely big field with a hall for indoor entertainment (when Covid
allows). It has kids play area plus football pitches also for those
interested they have a lawn bowls rink too. Unfortunately under
Covid rules we were limited to what we could do but I think everyone
has enjoyed their first outing of the year. Thank you Belton
Regards Ken, Sandra, Don and Jean

Belton continued. What a wonderful welcome Sandra, Don, Ken and Jean gave us all on their rally at Belton, because of last years cancelled rally due to “ covid restrictions “ we were all given a lucky bag as we pulled on to the rally field. Each bag contained memories of life as it used to be 75 years ago, contents came with a couple of union jacks, V E Day coasters, and a bottle of babycham for the ladies, also for the men a bottle of Kentish
Ale with substance and character called Spitfire, and our own evacuee tickets which also caused a bit of a titter. Social distancing means no flag but that did not stop our Marshals from including tea bags, coffee with creamer and biscuits which where all popped into our lucky bags. Friday night Ken called round each caravan with take away menus from a variety of local eateries so no complaints there then. Around Belton there are
plenty of places to go and see some fantastic garden centres. Doncaster, Lincoln and Cleethorpes all just a short drive away. So thank you Ken,Sandra, Don and Jean for going over board and giving us all a good time at Belton.
From Jean Baker.
This rally was supposed to be held last year to celebrate the 75th anniversary of V.E. day, but unfortunately because of Covid 19 restrictions it had to be cancelled. However this year it was able to go ahead.
The site is a large sports field adjacent to an old railway line. It is also within walking distance of the village of Belton where there is a one stop shop for groceries and also a selection of take aways offering fish and chips, Chinese, pizzas etc. There are good shopping facilities at
17
Scunthorpe and plenty of Garden centres to visit as well as a lot o local walks down the railway line and the Haxey canal.
We would like to thank Ken, Sandra, Jean and Don for running a really good rally and look forward to next year when we can use the Hall on site for a proper East Yorkshire social.

Riccall May 2021.
We went over on the Tuesday, started off sunny so tried to get our awning up before it rained and hailed, but got a bit wet, so waited for it to stop. It was supposed to be a BBQ but of cause we couldn’t do that.
Most vans arrived around 1pm, started off nice and sunny then we had a shower. Thursday it was lovely and sunny, a few of us sat out after we had been shopping, then sat out again after our tea till 9.30. Friday not good, raining, we drove over to Sheffield to see John’s sister. Saturday we went to Howden to see some friends too. Raining again. I felt sorry for the ones that only came Friday after work. Sunday a sunny day, we got the awning dry and down, passed through some showers on our way home.
Hopefully it will be different next year.
Sue and John Holroyd
Disabled pitches may be available on some
rallies. Speak to the Rally marshals

Riccall continued.
We didn`t get to Riccall until Thursday afternoon but when we arrived,
we got a lovely welcome by the Rally Marshals who said so lovingly
where have you been, your late so we got sited and then sat out in the
lovely sunshine and waited for Sandra Wright to arrive, it was a shame
that we did not have the barbeque but hopefully we will next year,
Saturday was quiet, uneventful, and very peaceful all three females had
gone to the Designer Outlet at York , we finished off the day with a few
gins and then in was Sunday, beautiful sunshine but we had to go home.
Big thanks to John Sue Jean and Ron and hope to see you next year.
From Christine, Pam and the good looking one.
Garthorpe Rally.
I would like to thank all those who attended the Garthorpe Rally and
kept to the guidelines, everyone talked socially distanced and apart from
the wet weather a good time was had by all.
We had two 1st time ralliers and two 2nd time ralliers on and I hope
they felt they were made very welcome, unfortunately 2 of them with
motorhomes had to be towed off the field and would like to thank Robin
Varley for doing that. Hopefully it won't have put them off rallying.

ALKO CARAVAN SPARE WHEEL CARRIER. Something to be aware of should you be anticipating getting a puncture. If you look at the images you will see the spare wheel carrier in the open and closed positions. I am aware of two incidents were the recovery firm such as Green Flag and the AA were called out to a punctured caravan tyre and could not get the spare wheel carrier to slide into the open position to allow access to the spare wheel. In both cases the caravan had to be carried on the back of the recovery vehicle with a flat tyre with the spare wheel still stuck under the caravan. I try and keep up to date with known problem areas that can give trouble and carryout preventative maintenance at home rather than when out on the road. Our van is coming up for 5 years old and is fully up to date with its annual servicing. The servicing does not cover any attention to the spare wheel carrier. Aware of the construction I decided to slide the carrier out to apply grease to the tubes. The tubes were seized solid and could not be moved. I finished up taking the whole carrier off complete with the spare wheel attached. (See pictures opposite) Plenty of WD 40 and some heat got things moving again. I cleaned the rust off the inner tubes sprayed them and packed it with grease after the paint had dried. It now slides in and out quite well. Should you ever get stuck and cannot get the spare wheel off your caravan there are 4 split pins to remove at the off side of the caravan 2 either side of the chassis, just hope it’s not wet as you have to lay down to get to them. The carrier will come off in one piece complete with the wheel, be aware it’s heavy when you are laid on your side. You will now have access to the spare wheel. I don’t watch Formula one car racing very often but when I see them change 4 wheels in 2/3 seconds I realise old age is coming or maybe it has already arrived. A single axle punctured caravan becomes very close to the ground, if it is still attached to the tow car and the tyre is definitely beyond repair you may want consider pulling it up onto some wedge or wood to give you more room to get the jack underneath. If you are hoping to save the tyre don’t ask it to climb onto a piece of wood as the tyre carcass will be
20
damaged. Slacken the wheel nuts just a little but leave the wheel in position for safety until you have got the spare out. You might pull the caravan off the jack getting the spare out. If it’s not coupled up to the car and it’s a single axle you can lower the front end of the caravan which will give you more room to get the spare out. Be careful the caravan does not move when jacked up as it will only be braked on one wheel. If the caravan is having an annual service you may want consider asking the servicing dealer to slide the spare wheel carrier out and apply grease to the tubes to prevent seizure. If there is anything here you don’t understand give me a ring on 07855240245 John Dale.

OUT AND ABOUT WITH THE EDITOR.
Hi everyone I hope you remember me I'm Jock. I used to travel with the Chairman when that was Tim but now I find myself out and About with the editor, June. Well it’s been another strange start to the season, but now we have got going there have been some very good rally venues, despite not being able to meet for socials. We went to Reedness in April which was run by Paul Gillett with Lynn and Andrew Clarkson. The weather was quite warm so we sat outside drinking tea with them. We also went for a ride to Goole and for a walk to have a look at the river. From there we went on to South Cliff at Bridlington run by John and Sue Holroyd and Sue and Maurice Agar. This was a very different site with hard standings and electrics. There was also a toilet block which was only partially open because of Covid restrictions, but they were very nice. Unfortunately the weather was cooler because of the sea breeze. Lynn Lloyd made us a cup of tea when we arrived so we sat outside with her and Phil and had a catch up before we got set up. The rest of the week was mainly dry so we spent it exploring the area. The next rally we went on was Swinethorpe which was also run by John and Sue but this time with Ron and Jean Warner. This time the weather was quite wet, but the field was good so there were no problems pitching. We walked up to the next village called Harby and found out some interesting facts about it. (see opposite) We also saw a food sharing wheelbarrow, which had been set up during lockdown to help people who could not get out to shop and there was a book swap box. Belton house was only a short ride away which had lovely gardens, but will be even better when the house is open. We also
went to Brodsworth Hall and Doddington Hall. It was a lovely venue with lots to do. From Swinethorpe we went on to Garthorpe which Kath and Dave were running with Lynn and Andrew.
23
Again this was a good flat field and on Friday it was mainly sunny so we sat outside talking to the Marshals.I found a new friend, one of Lynn’s bears she had knitted, but the friendship didn’t last long as he had to go back to be given to the charity. Unfortunately the weather turned wet again on Saturday so we took a ride to Scunthorpe. June and Tim haven't been on any more rallies since because they went to cele-brate a rather late Christmas with June's family in the caravans at Over Alderley. This is a site EYC have a rally at in Au-gust. There were many National Trust properties and lovely walks nearby.
Well better get this off to June as she says she is waiting to print. Hope to see you around on a rally field soon,
Love from Jock.
Harby Village.
Harby is a village in the English county of Nottinghamshire, the farthest eastern village within the county boundaries. The nearest large town is Lincoln over the border in Lincolnshire. According to the 2001 census it had a population of 289. The parish church of All Saints' was built in 1875-76 in Early English style. In the east wall of the tower is a statue to Eleanor of Castile who died in 1290 at the nearby house of Richard de Weston. The moated site of Weston's house is to the east of the church. The capless stump of a five-storey tower windmill, built c. 1877, stands at the end of Mill Field Close (grid reference SK877707).[2] A post wind-mill is also recorded for Harby." Queen Eleanor was married to King Edward 1, she became ill while stay-ing at the royal hunting lodge at Clipstone in Sherwood Forest. She was being taken to the shrine of St. Hugh in Lincoln Cathedral but died at the Manor House in Harby on the way. On the journey back to London, for her funeral, 12 crosses known as "Eleanor Crosses" were erected at each place where the funeral cortege stayed for the night. Most of the Eleanor Crosses were destroyed during the English Civil War but 3 remain at Geddington, Hardington & Waltham. There are many references to Queen Eleanor in the village of Harby (This information courtesy of Wikipedia.)

Valerie Brady who sadly passed away 21st November 2020 after a short illness aged 79 leaving a daughter, son and four grand children. She was devoted to all. Valerie was born in 1941and married Derek in 1964. We started caravanning with East Yorkshire in 1982 and did many weekend rallies, rushing home from work and school on a Friday to change and to go out on the rally and back on Sunday. How Val managed to get the washing and ironing completed and ready for Monday I’ll never know.
We all looked forward to the Easter holiday skiing Rally, in Aviemore, which we visited for ten successive years. Val did ski mainly on the gentle slopes two or three times a week, but did enjoy the whisky trails, lunches and teas out that included a drink. In 1976 we met Judy and Peter Rickell on a Narbeth and from then on we spent most of our holidays together both in this country and abroad. We were to run our first rally together in 2000 but unfortunately I was ill so our first rally together was at Charlbury in 2001. Over the years we ran about fifteen rallies together. Since stopping running rallies we have still holidayed together. Val and I have met and made many good friends during our years of rallying and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our friends who sent their very sincere and moving thoughts in their cards, thank you. I would still like to caravan but I will sadly miss her so very much. God bless, love you Val. Derek
Shirley Redman who passed away on Christmas morning last year. We lost another long time member of the East Yorkshire Centre. Shirley Redman passed away peacefully after battling with Dementia for just over 6 years and is now reunited with Pete who died in 2013 and their gorgeous Golden Retriever Ben, hopefully sharing a Guinness or two and a long walk. Sons' Graeme and Neil, who rallied with their parents for a long time from 1979, contacted as many rallying friends as they could to pass on the sad news and funeral details. The funeral, as with most at the moment, was sadly limited to immediate family
only, but there was an on-line stream as well which allowed many more to join and celebrate Shirley's life. They received lots of lovely messages both before and after the service which was heart-warming and comforting and they were very thankful for. Many of the messages included lovely stories about Shirley
25
that they hadn’t heard before. After the funeral they received a thought provoking comment from one of Shirley's friends that also relates to many others we have sadly lost, despite knowing and talking to people weekend after weekend for many years on the rally field you often don't find out what made them who they were until you listen to the tributes compiled for their funeral service. As most of her friends know what Shirley was like on the rally field, Graeme and Neil have chosen the following selection about their mum's early life to share from the many pages of history they collated from family and friends.
Being born 3 years before the 2nd World War this clearly dominated much of her childhood memories. She often talked about using Jackson’s (the bakers) air-raid shelter and recollected one occasion when the whole family were very lucky when an incendiary bomb came through the roof and didn't furtively start a fire as they were still in the house! Even her school was bombed not long after she had started and she had to go to another school.
After school she did a scholarship at the Hull College of Commerce. In her spare time she was an active member of the Youth Club attached to Argyle Street Methodist Church where she was encouraged to take on the role of Brown Owl to the church Brownie pack; quite a challenge to control a lively bunch of 7 – 11 year olds, but she succeeded because she was great fun and had a wicked sense of humour. After College she was snapped up at a local Solicitor’s based on Whitefriargate. This is where her love of M&S started as they could see all the sale items as soon as they were displayed from their office across the street.
A number of years later she met Pete at the City Hall, where they went dancing, something that she continued to love throughout her life. Later on Pete was more keen to sit and watch rather than dance, partly due to his electrician’s knees! They travelled far and wide just before and after they were married, a lot of the time on scooter, until Graeme was born, followed by Neil 4 years later. The following year, 1973, they bought their first Caravan, a Thompson Glen Nevis. It was a few years before they joined the Caravan Club and then started rallying in 1979, but from that point onwards they were away as often as they could until Pete’s ill health slowed them down.
Caravanning was definitely a shared pleasure that Shirley and Pete (aka Mum & Dad) worked hard for. We both feel that we benefited so much from this in our younger years and thank all the other rallying families for making it so.
