Tournament Participants, Families, and Friends, On behalf of the Rising Suns, we would like to welcome everyone to our Annual Basketball Tournament. This year marks our 16th Annual Tournament and we feel very fortunate to have the continued support of the different organizations from Northern California and their membership. We would like to say THANK YOU to of all the players, coaches and parents because without everyone, we would not be able to have a successful tournament. While this is a competitive basketball tournament and of course we all enjoy winning, let’s not lose sight of the fact that it is still just a game. Sportsmanship, fair play and teamwork are those aspects of the game that these players can use to help shape their future and make a difference. We would like to wish Good Luck to all the participants and hope that you do well, but most importantly have fun. Congratulations to the class of 2017! Wishing you all fond memories of your years playing ball. Thank you for your participation, enjoy the tournament and we hope to see you next year. Sincerely, The East Bay Rising Suns Tournament Committee

Final Standings to be determined by:1) Best Win/Loss record2) Pool Play Tiebreakers (to be used in the event teams have tied records):

a) Tiebreaker #1 - Point Differential: Difference between winner and loser score each game. (+) if winner(-) if loser. There will be a maximum value of +/-15, regardless of the final score. Therefore, there will be no tiebreakers advantage whether winning by 15 points or 50 points.

b) Tiebreaker #2 - if two teams have the same point differential: Head to Head: in the event that point differential does not settle the tiebreaker, and two teams are still tied, the head-to-head result betweenremaining teams will determine the rankings.

c) Tiebreaker #3 - if three teams have the same point differential: Total Points: Total points scored in thethree pool play games will be the 3rd tiebreaker.

d) Tiebreaker #4 coin flip will determine the rankings

It seemed like yesterday when I had just started the Rising Suns organization. I was in the 7th grade, trying out for the one and only Bruce Shimada and let me tell you one thing, I was nervous. However, I did have a few of my closest friends along my side. Some familiar faces, such as Taylor Okazaki, Kaylee Wong, Alyssa Cruz, Nikki Kim and a few others were also trying out. Finally, when we made our team, I couldn't be more grateful. Not only did we gain an unbreakable bond, but also a sisterhood. Throughout the years, we have gained many players, but lost many too. Regardless, we have always managed to become a family. And this is what Suns is really about. Making lifelong friends, learning

communication skills, and understanding how to work as a team. First and foremost, I would like to thank my coach Bruce Shimada for teaching me everything I know today. Without him, I would not be the player I am. Also, I would like to thank Taylor Okazaki for always being there for me. She has always been supporting me and sticking on my side throughout my career. In addition, I would like to shoutout the 12th grade girls Suns team for being my family. Finally, l would like to thank my mom and dad, Karen and David Pluth, for always pushing me to my full potential, caring for me, and keeping me on the path to success. I would like to proudly announce I will be continuing my basketball career at Chabot Community College. But for now, farewell Rising Suns! It's time to finally graduate ladies! Sincerely, Alyssa Pluth

ALYSSA WONGHERCULES HIGH SCHOOL

I can’t believe that this is my final year of playing for Rising Suns. I actually was given the opportunity to play on the 7th grade team when I was in 6th grade. The following year I made the decision to move to the incoming 7th grade team. Although I loved all the girls on the older team I feel I made the correct decision with moving to the incoming 7th grade team. I love the team I’m on and all the memories we had made.

Our team has had many changes throughout the years. We’ve lost and gained a lot of players along the way, but I’m so happy that our team have always been able to bond with new teammates easily. I’d like to thank Alyssa Pluth and Taylor Okazaki for staying with me since the beginning. We are the “Originals”. I’d also like to thank

Courtney Tamaki and Mira Love-Sanco for coming onto the Suns organization with me from Ohtani. I treasured all the friendships I have made with all the girls on the Suns, past and present. I hope that there will be opportunities in the future for our lives to cross paths again. My experience on this organization will definitely be a highlight of my life.

There has been so many people that played a huge part on my experience with asian ball. I’d like to give special thanks to the following people:1) Ted and Randy, for managing our team these past years and getting us into all of

our tournaments. 2) Bruce, for always pushing me and never giving up on me and coming to my high

school games. 3) Mike (who I’ve known for a short time but have grown very fond of), for only seeing

the good things I do and not seeing all my mistakes during the games. And also for attending my high school games and bringing snacks for us.

4) All the parents for being such great cheerleaders and snacks they bring to our games.

Finally, I’d like to thank my parents for giving me the opportunity to play for this amazing team. Thank you mom for taking me to all my games and being embarrassing whenever I do something good on the court. Thank you dad for making the extra effort for coming to my games. I know it was hard when you were managing Alec’s team especially when we are playing in the same tournaments. I don’t say it enough, but I really appreciate that you come to all the games that you can.

Thank you Rising Suns for the opportunity for this amazing experience in my life.

It's finally my senior year; my last year playing asian league. I'd like to thank Ted for reaching out to my family and I to give me an opportunity to participate in asian league and of course thank Bruce for coaching me to be a smarter player every single practice and game. I LOVE MY TEAM, i met so many amazing people throughout my journey playing on the Suns and will never forget the memories that i've made with the girls on the team today, and all the girls that previously played on the team that are no longer with us today. I love you all! GO SUNS. Brittney Lewis

It's crazy to think that after 9 years of Asian league basketball, it's all coming to an end. These past four years on Rising Suns have given me priceless memories that I will remember forever. I would like to thank my parents for taking the time to drive me to and from practices and games, as well as my second family, the Wongs, for all of the support they’ve given me. Even though the Rising Suns team I played with for my first three years disbanded last year, I would like to thank the class of 2017 Rising Suns team for welcoming me onto the team. A special thanks to Ted and Randy for

recruiting me, Mike for making such an effort to help me understand the plays and coming to my high school games, and Bruce for being such an inspirational and supporting coach who was never afraid to speak his mind. Even though I was unable to play this year because of a broken leg, I am glad that I have had the chance to play with such amazing people. Thank you to everyone who has been involved in my basketball career, I couldn't have gotten here without you. Courtney Tamaki

Playing for the Rising Suns has been such an amazing and fun

experience for me. When I first started playing for the Rising Suns, I was in 10th grade. I was so nervous. I did not know what to expect, and all I knew was that Asian League would not be like high school ball since everyone who played is extremely quick. Looking back to that time, I realize just how glad I am that I joined the organization. I met so many amazing people and have grown to cherish the many memories I have with this team. These past three years have been so memorable and enjoyable. I have made great friends and had many great experiences that bring a smile to my face.

Time flew by so quickly and it is hard to believe that this is our senior year and the last year we will be playing together. It still does not

feel like we are graduating but senior year has already been so much fun playing with these girls. The Rising Suns Organization and team has always been such a warm and welcoming community and I will always be grateful to them. I now am looking forward to starting a new chapter in my life attending college. I am hopeful I will see many of the girls I have played with and against.

I have had so much fun going to practices and traveling to tournaments. It has been so much fun traveling to Los Angeles, Sacramento, San Jose, Reno, and other places as well. Driving to practices with some of the girls and practicing with the entire team has been such a fun experience. Practices were always fun because we were able to laugh even if we were practicing and working hard. The same thing goes for the games as well. During the games, we were able to laugh and have fun. This organization has given me the chance to make many fond memories through the practices and tournaments we played and the many friendships I have made.

I would like to thank our coaches Bruce, Tamiko, and Mike for spending so much of their personal time and effort into our team. I am so glad that you have coached and worked with us. I would also like to thank my parents for always supporting me by driving me to the practices and games and for supporting me throughout all these years. I would especially like to thank my dad who was the team manager and helped to get gym time and signed us up for tournaments. I would also like to thank the dads that drove us to practice every week and all the parents that came to our games. Lastly, I would like to thank my teammates for all of the fun and great times. You are all such wonderful people and I am so glad that I got the chance to know you through the organization.

Going into senior year, I didn’t have a team to play for since there weren’t enough players in my organization. The past years, I played up on a few teams however I never had a place to call home in my same age bracket.

I have been guest playing for the EB Rising Suns ever since my sophomore year and the Suns have always been welcoming and supportive of me, even when I was playing on a different team. When I finally became a senior, I joined the Suns as a permanent player. Coming from a team that went to friendship in most tournaments to joining a team that went to many championship games was a big deal and an exciting change. Getting to sleep in on Sunday mornings is a

great feeling, too.

I really enjoy playing on a team with girls who are skilled and talented and I have learned a lot from playing beside them. Also playing for coaches with many different styles, I have learned so much from Coach Bruce and Coach Mike, lessons I will never forget. Having such supportive coaches who always tell me to shoot more and be more aggressive really brought up my confidence.

I am so thankful to have been apart of this team and organization, even though I’ve only been on this team for a short time; I have made many new friends and hope to continue the friendships in many years to come.

I never thought that such a big part of my life would come to a

close so soon. It seems like it were just yesterday when I put on a Rising Suns jersey for the first time during my freshman year. The memories and friends I’ve made through this program are truly unforgettable. Although some teammates have come and go, I have always felt like I had another family.

From the beginning, Coach Bruce called me Kat and it seem to start a trend with some other teammates calling me Kat as well. Prior to joining the league, only my parents, aunts and uncles would call me that. This was just one of the many examples where I felt like this team was truly a family.

Basketball itself has made a huge impact on my life, but the people that have constantly guided and supported me while playing have made an even bigger impact. Thank you to all my coaches who have supported me and given me the opportunity to play in this league. You guys were the one who believed in me when I didn’t. Your constant support and motivation

have pushed me to be the best that I can be. Thank you to all my teammates for the endless laughs and great memories that we’ve shared

over the last few years. Thank you all for pushing me to be my best self. You guys are my constant competition at practice, but once we step out on the court we are family. It’s hard to imagine that I will never have the opportunity to play with you guys again but I’ll always be here to support you. I was blessed to be surrounded by such a great group of girls and sometimes I take it for granted. Although we will all be going separate ways next year, I know we will always keep in touch.

Last, but not least, I want to thank my family. There are not enough words in the world to express

how grateful I am for my parents. Thank you for allowing me to develop this passion over the years and never giving up on me even though sometimes you had reason to. Driving me around to practice after practice was not always easy, but you guys worked out your schedules for me. The sacrifices that you have made for me are something I can never repay you for and I’m eternally grateful for everything you do. And for my sister, Samantha, I couldn’t do it without you. I know basketball isn’t your favorite, but you’ve managed to support me through it all and I will miss you a lot when I go off to college.

I will never forget these past four years of Rising Suns basketball. I am so grateful for the opportunities that I have received by being a part of such an amazing organization. I hope that our senior class has been able to leave a legacy on this program that will inspire the underclassmen to do great things in the future. The lessons and experiences we learned over the past few years will follow us to college and beyond. Farewell to this program and thank you to everyone who has constantly supported me through this journey.

I can't believe this will be my last year being apart of the Rising Suns organization. Coming back to Suns after 2 years was one of the best decisions that I've made this year. I had a rough high school season because I was a transfer, so being able to play with Suns, I am able to really finish my senior year with wins and smiles with a great group of girls! First, I would like to thank Coach Bruce for taking me 8th grade year and taking me back my senior year! I would also like to thank the Rising Suns organization for a great 5 years of Asian tournament basketball! Lastly, thank you to my parents for putting me in Asian league, I have made so many friends while being able to play the sport I love. My (Rising) Sun has set, you will be missed... Mira Love-Sangco

It’s unfortunate to think that this is my last year of playing asian league and being apart of the Suns organization. When I started as a guest player they treated me as though I was already apart of the team. First I would like to thank the Suns for bringing me into their organization and making the game of basketball enjoyable. Even though I didn’t start out as a sun they made the past years memorable by meeting new people and making new friends. They made the last two years of asian league fun and unforgettable. From being a guest player freshman year to joining the team was one of the best decisions I’ve made. The team took me into their family and I couldn’t be thankful enough. Even though I’ve only been playing for two seasons I have enjoyed every moment of it and will truly miss playing with all the girls. Second I would like to thank all the coaches in my life

that had help shape me into the person and player I am today. For the coaches that kept pushing me to be my best and never giving up on me, I really appreciate you and your tolerance in coaching me. I know I’m not the easiest to coach but I am grateful for your patience and helping me grow into the player and person I am today. Lastly I would like to thank my family. To my mom and dad who have supported me through everything, and for always being my number one fans. Both would always make it to my games no matter the distance or time, and would encourage me from sidelines. Not only would they always encourage me to do my best, they would help me through the rough times. If I had a bad game they would try to lift my spirits up and make me feel better. I’d also like to thank my brother for helping me become the player I am today. From giving me one on one practices to coming to my games whenever he could. He is always there for me whenever I need him whether it’s about basketball, school, or life in general. He would always encourage me to do my best and keep working hard. Marissa Otonari

These past 3 years on Rising Suns have definitely been filled with memories that I’ll never forget. I was able to meet many new people who are both amazing athletes and kindhearted individuals. As a team we easily created a strong bond, a bond which supports one another not only on court, but off court as well. These girls have filled my long hours of practice with much excitement, laughter, and joy. Our after-practice boba runs were always to look forward to; although, we went more

than we should of. They all have each other’s backs and are always the first to pick each other up when things go bad. These girls are also always up to the challenge to push each other to become better players. So thank you to my team for including me within your tight-nit family and filling my high school weekends with fun tournaments and spam musubi. Even though we are soon to be parting ways and heading down our own paths, the friendships we have created will last a lifetime.

To Coach Bruce and Coach Mike, thank you for having faith in the way I

play and doing everything possible to improve my game. Thank you for also giving us life lessons that I know that we’ll need to keep in mind for the future. To my mom, thank you for giving me your whole-hearted support. To my dad, thank you for pushing me to be the best I can be and giving me a reason to continue playing.

Thank you so much to the Suns Organization for allowing me to play for your team and giving me experiences that I will hold close to my heart for years to come.

Taylor Okazaki Monte Vista High School

Basketball has always been such a huge part of my life and I

couldn’t imagine my life without it and the people it has brought me close to. My teammates, coaches, and family, along with the many friends I made have made this experience something I will cherish forever. I first wanted to thank my coaches; Bruce, Tamiko, and Mike; for all of the time and hard work they put into helping us become better players and for always having our backs. They have always been so supportive of us and they’ve taught us so many lessons that I know none of us will ever forget. I also wanted to thank my family for everything they’ve done. Mom and Dad, thank you for everything you did to help our team and for driving me to every practice and every game. I don’t know what I would have done without you. Megan and Kyle, thank you for coming to each and every one of my games and cheering me on from the stands. I’m so incredibly

grateful to have had such an amazing support team of my coaches and my family. It’s hard to believe that such an important part of my life is coming to an end. Looking back on all of my basketball experiences, I can without a doubt say that I have never felt a greater sense of family than from playing with the Suns. All of the people I played with will always be more than just my teammates. They’re my family. Every time that we’ve stepped onto the court together, we’ve pushed each other and encouraged each other and most importantly, we’ve put our heart out on that floor and played for one another. We’ve been through so much together and I couldn’t have asked for better people to spend so much time with. I’m so blessed to have had these amazing girls come into my life and I’m so sad that our journey has come to an end, but I’m so glad to call each and every one of you my best friends and my sisters. I love you all so much and thank you for the memories. I am so incredibly thankful to have found such an amazing team and to have had the opportunity to call myself a Rising Sun. I couldn’t begin to imagine what my life would have been like without these past six years with the Rising Suns and I know that when I look back on my basketball days, I’m not going to remember the scores of every game or which tournaments we may or may not have won. I’m going to remember the people I got to spend these past six seasons with and the organization that made it possible. Thank you Rising Suns for giving me such an amazing opportunity to play the sport that I love and for introducing me to some of the most important people in my life and for the countless memories that I will never forget. I’m so sad that my time as a Rising Suns is coming to an end, but this organization will always hold a special place in my heart and will always be some of the best years of my life. Taylor Okazaki
