Pastor’s Letter September 8/9

Dear Parish Family,

Like most Americans, I am proud to describe my cultural heritage. I am Italian and Czech. My grandparents Mike and Sadie were born in Naples, Italy. Tony and Margaret, my maternal grandparents, were born in Czechoslovakia. I am a child of immigrants and proud to be so. And although most of us speak with a certain romantic nostalgia of those who, like my grandparents, immigrated to this country, in truth their lives were difficult and often filled with suffering. Most immigrants came here because conditions at home were difficult and opportunities were lacking.

The new world of America offered hope but was not a magic answer. Those who came to this country often faced prejudice and hostility because they were Irish, Italian, Polish, or of some other minority background. Sometimes they suffered discrimination because they were poor and uneducated; sometimes because they were Catholic. The idea of America as a place of welcome is a matter of pride and identity as typified in lines of a poem about The Statue of Liberty: "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free … Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!" At the same time, this ideal has always been troublesome. As the fictitious Senator Billboard Rawkins declared in the play Finian’s Rainbow: “My family's been having nothing but trouble with immigrants ever since they come to this country!”

Any nation’s policy on immigration is complicated, and ours is no exception. I realize that many of us hold strong opinions on the matter. I am not an expert on economic policy, international law, or government. But I am a priest and it seems to me that there are some things that religious people ought to pay attention to as we think it all through. First, immigrants are part of our history, especially here at Sacred Hearts. Their memory is kept in the shamrocks hidden in the painted arches and stained glass windows of our church. Second, many modern immigrants are Catholic and most are Christian. Not that we should ignore someone not of our faith but this common bond seems important. Finally, the Old Testament prophets and Jesus in his parables speak forcefully of welcoming the alien, the stranger, and the person in need as a primary sign and test of our faith: “As often as you have done it for these, the least of my children, you have done it to me.”

Just something to think about. I realize that faith ideals often seem altruistic and inadequate to modern problems. Some may even wonder why I would choose to write this. But I am, after all, a child of immigrants.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Rev. Michael A. Vetrano

Regional S

chool New

s Our Lady of the Hamptons The 2013-2014 school year begins on September 9 for the 300 students of our Regional Catholic school. Bishop Nelson Perez will be the prin-cipal celebrant of the opening concelebrated liturgy at Our Lady of Po-land Church on Friday, September 13 at 10AM.

The annual Bucks for Books raffle to benefit OLH is beginning now, and will culminate in the grand drawing on December 16, with the big winner claiming the $12,000 jackpot. Tickets are available at the school 283-9140.

Early in 2009, the community of Our Lady of the Hamptons Regional Catholic School embarked upon a major campaign to raise funds for the proposed construction of a full-scale gymnasium-Wellness center and four additional classrooms to accommodate the growing student population. Thanks to the parent, student, parish and local communities, as well as a few major foundations, close to three million dollars was raised. The first physical education classes and inter-school athlet-ics competitions were held beginning in January of this year!

Our Lady of the Hamptons now stands as the only Catholic elementary school on the East End-South Fork of Long Island. Outstanding academics, especially on Math and Language Arts, a strong Fine Arts program of music, art, dance and drama and a growing Science and Technology program are enhanced by the teaching of our Catholic faith. Parish and community outreach and participation on the wide extra-curricular activities.

Despite a difficult economy and increased demands upon the parish budgets, the school is now ac-tively seeking investors from among the parish, local and wider communities as they seek to raise the final funding necessary to complete and furnish the interior of the classrooms. The estimated def-icit is approximately eight hundred thousand dollars.

We invite anyone who is willing to consider the possibility of a memorial gift in any amount to visit the school, call for an appointment (283-9140) or visit the website www.olh.org where a full video of the constriction project is available. Brochures are available in the vestibule of the church.

The need to continue, expand and reap the benefits of a true Catholic education is essential as we face the future of our Church and country. We cannot put a price on the effect your gift may have, but promise prayers of gratitude and support , as well as the knowledge that you have truly helped to make a difference!

Thanks so much! We hope from you! Sister Kathryn Schlueter, CSJ Principal

Adult Faith Formation :: September 23 at 7 PM Faith and Health Care Decisions

What every Catholic needs to know

Fr. Mike Vetrano Modern medicine is both wonderful and frighteningly complicated. Just 50 years ago people were born and people died without much to consider or decide about. Today things are different. Many have already faced difficult health care decisions for family members. We wonder who will decide things for us if we cannot make our own decisions. Many wonder what a person of faith should think about life support, artificial nutrition, organ donation, and the care of the seriously ill. This evening will explore the changes in medicine and the development of Catholic medical ethics. This will be a practical evening, giving you the information you need to prepare for these decisions. It will also be spiritual since the way we face these issues if often a profound encounter with our faith, trust, and belief.

Year of F

aith Pilgrim

age Year of Faith

Diocesan Pilgrimage to the

Basilica Shrine of the Immaculate Conception Washington, D.C.

Saturday, September 28th, 2013

For the Christian, pilgrimage is a way of life. Our life on earth is a continuing jour-ney towards complete union with God in the kingdom. From earliest times, Chris-tians have journeyed to defined spaces and places to practice pilgrimage as a spiritual exercise for growth in faith. Undertaking a pilgrimage to a specific holy site, as an individual or with others, helps the Christian prepare for the journey, the high point of which is the encounter with God, through Christ, in the power of the Spirit in the midst of the church. Pilgrimage is a transforming practice which opens us to the gift of the indulgence for ourselves and for others. It gives renewed meaning to the rites and rituals which are gifts of our faith and which serve to deepen our connection to God through Christ and to one other.

Join us for a day of prayer, reflection, reconciliation and

Eucharist.

Ministry of Praise for Life comes to SHJM

This fall we are beginning a ministry of praise for life. A ministry of praise is made up of parishioners who agree to set aside some time each day to pray for an important cause. Here at SHJM our ministry of praise will be dedicated to the many issues that our Church calls life issues. Life issues that affect the humanity and dignity of every person but most especially those that Pope Francis speaks of as being on the margins of our society: the unborn, the very old, the poor, those in struggling families, those in prison. It is a wonderful ministry for people who are homebound and wish to use their time to pray for others but it is a wonderful ministry for any person who can devote a few minutes a day to prayer. We will be holding an enrollment for our ministry of praise members and each member will receive a prayer book to use each day. If you are interested in joining this ministry, please send your information to the parish office so we can contact you:

3 Sharing the Gospel Love God more than yourself. This means you will give up something you dearly love for him. When you have only one candy bar, God wants you to share it with your sister. When you have two pencils and two notebooks, God wants you to share with a student who has none. If your grandmother and grandfather play games and read to you, God wants you to share them with children who have no grand-parents. Prayer Lord, help me share the things I prize most. Something to Draw Draw a picture of you sharing your teddy bear with your best friend. Mission for the Week I will share part of the money I have with the poor.
