NEW COURSE!
Working with Babies
Course Summary: This practical course has been developed in partnership with a nursery manager who
specialises in working with babies and is an essential course for anyone working with
this age group. The course details the changes the brain goes through in the first two
years of a child’s life and the importance of physical exploration for babies and young
children. It will also explore how modern life has made the experience of babies a more
sedentary one and how we can combat this. The course will also help you to get
parents involved by supporting you to develop fun, exciting activities that are relevant
to very young children but are still engaging for adults to take part in.
This half day is course is practical combining insights into brain development with hands
on activities to create a “tummy time” extravaganza for your setting.
Areas of Learning: While ‘Working with Babies’ predominantly meets areas of
learning: Personal, Social and Emotional, Physical Development and Communication
and Language the ideas for interaction promote a whole range of developmental
outcomes.
This course will support practitioners to gain knowledge on:
The neuroscience of early childhood and changes to the brain Communication and Language acquisition Physical and emotional development in babies
The effects of modern parenting
Neuro-motor immaturity and Bucket Baby Syndrome

Extension and Challenge in
Pre-School
Specifically developed in response to
Ofsted inspections.
Course Summary: This training has been specifically developed in response to Ofsted feedback whereby
inspectors had identified that children’s thinking needed to be extended and challenged
more during play and activities. The course meets the specific areas of learning as well
as contributing to all of the prime areas.
Practitioners are asked to consider the questions below on how they can ensure
extension and challenge in the pre-school room. If you need support answering these
questions then this course is for you!

experiences?
Do your areas support children to make decisions, problem solve, be creative, peer
coach and make links in their learning?
Does your enhanced provision extend children’s interests and development?
Do you Consider Blooms Taxonomy to plan and support children’s higher order
thinking skills?
Does your room support sustained shared thinking?
How do you plan your adult led experiences to have clear learning objectives
particularly for Maths and Literacy?

Project Alice!
We were bowled over at the feedback from practitioners following our 2016 Annual
Conference, many about one of our keynote speakers Alice Sharp …
‘Alice was amazing I would like to have the
whole team inspired by her!’
‘Fantastic ideas and such an inspiring
speaker in Alice Sharp’
‘Alice was very enthusiastic and her active
approach engaged me and made me want
to research more of her ideas’
Early Years Specialist Alice is MD of Experiential Play and owner of resource company
Wonderbox. She is a renowned, brilliant speaker and works with many local authorities
and departments across Britain addressing the imminent changes towards experiential
learning throughout nursery and primary schools.
Alice also travels the Globe sharing her ideas and practices so we are enormously
pleased to be able to work with her on a year long learning environment project
starting in November 2016!
This is a unique opportunity to work alongside an incredibly inspiring early years
specialist to challenge your thinking and improve the quality of teaching and learning
for all children. Are you up for the challenge? Read on to find out about the project
and how you can take part but please be aware places are limited…so book yours
now!
Summary - Project Alice! Effective self - evaluation is the starting point for improvement and should be a key
aspect of our early year’s provision. One of the most effective approaches to improving
our practice and provision is when staff are reflective, consider the children’s
engagement levels, the effectiveness of the learning environment and the quality of the
whole provision
Our project will consider every aspect of playful and enriched environments that
promote learning and will introduce using the SSTEW Scales as a tool for reflection and
change.
The SSTEW audit is designed to link emotional well-being
and sustained shared thinking. The scales look at how
environment, interactions and relationships with your
children, support them to feel safe, comfortable,
interested and stimulated in order to learning and be in a
position to think deeply.

NEW COURSE!
Talking Matters Supporting Speech and
Language Development in the Early Years
Course Summary: Communication is at the core of what we do in business, education and socially. Never
before in our history have we been able to communicate as quickly and widely as we
can today. There is no doubt we know good communication when we see it. Bearing in
mind the importance of communication in today’s society we want our children to
develop the strongest communication skills they are capable of. And of course, the
foundations of good communication skills are in the Early Years.
In this course, Speech and Language Therapist, Sue Hillier will guide practitioners to
consider:
Why it is so important to get language and communication right early on
What to expect at certain ages to raise our expectations for children’s language
achievement
How to assess children’s language and when to consider referral to Speech and
Language Therapy
A systematic and consistent approach to basic strategies to support language
development
Areas of Learning: This course meets the prime areas of Communication and Language Development and
Social and Emotional Development. This also lays the foundations for the specific area of
Literacy.
Course Leader: Speech and Language Therapist: Sue Hillier.
Audience: This course is suitable for Early Years practitioners who work in nurseries,
pre-schools, OOSCs and childminders who would like to increase their knowledge in

Engaging the Hard to Engage Understanding the child with Autism/child with
significant communication and interaction difficulties.
Course Summary: Children with social communication and interaction difficulties have problems
understanding what other people mean. Communication is not just the words we use;
but how we use our body language, facial expression and tone of voice to communicate
with someone else. Therefore, it is helpful to establish other methods of communication
to encourage successful communication.
Areas of Learning:
This course meets the prime areas of Personal, Social and Emotional Development and
Communication and Language Development as well as supporting the specific area of
Literacy.
This three hour course will support practitioners to understand:

Heroes and Monsters A day of superhero fun and thought
provoking insights
Course Summary:
In this truly unique course practitioners will experience all the fun of super hero play
and its incredible benefits to children and will also discuss the very real monsters and
heroes in children’s lives.
This session seamlessly moves from laugh out loud silliness to stark information on the
emotional damage that some children experience at the hands of adults. It gives
practical advice on what we can do to help mitigate that damage and looks at the
profound and life changing effect a caring adult can have on a child’s emotional
wellbeing, development and mental health.
There are monsters in children’s lives but there are also heroes and sometimes all it
takes is one early years worker to be that hero.
Areas of Learning: While this course meets the prime areas of Personal, Social and Emotional
Development, Communication and Language and Physical Development, the specific
areas of Understanding the World and are also met.

Course Summary After thoroughly enjoying and being suitably inspired by Helen Battelley’s workshop at
our Early Years Conference, Lucy and Sue were left wanting more! By January 2017 Lucy
and Sue will have completed additional training days led by Helen and will be eager to
cascade some new and exciting ideas for the delivery of creative dance and movement
based activities. The recommendation for children under 5 years old is that they should
participate in at least 3 hours of physical activity per day. In Nottingham, 10% of under-
5s meet this target, but 90% don’t. With childhood obesity on the rise, now is the time
to get children moving!
Warning: This will be a highly practical (and fun) day, trainers are essential!
Develop your confidence in the areas of dance, movement, singing and music
Consider how to embed music and movement within your daily routine
Understand the impact that physical development has on prime and specific areas of
learning
Consider how music and movement supports the development of auditory memory
Understand the impact that physical development has on brain development,
including bilateral movement; which is an essential skill for writing

Active Maths: Mathematics as part of the child’s world!
Course Summary: To many adults, the words Maths and Play have absolutely nothing to do with each
other. For many of us, maths was a torture, something we had to do, and something we
didn’t understand. Play on the other hand was something we loved. Young children are
learning maths all the time through a wide variety of play experiences. From the time
they are born, babies are surrounded by sense impressions. Shapes in particular are of
immediate importance: babies react instinctively to the arrangement of shapes which
make up the human face. Children have many opportunities to enjoy and learn maths

NEW COURSE!
Boisterous Play for Under 5’s Rough and tumble without the tears
for boys AND girls!
Course Summary: This new course takes practitioners through a series of activities designed to put some
of the thrill and boisterousness back into play. Children are constantly told not to be so
rough and yet by restricting this kind of play we are in danger of restricting their physical
development and resilience.
This course highlights the importance of rough and tumble and boisterous play and
demonstrates a series of incremental activities to increase rough and tumble play in a
play setting. This course is ideal for any setting wishing to make play more exciting and
is especially valuable for settings where older children appear bored with the everyday
activities and their behaviour deteriorates.
Areas of Learning: While this course meets the prime areas of Physical Development, Personal, Social and
Emotional and Communication and Language Development, the specific area of
Understanding the World and is also met.
This course will support practitioners to gain an understanding of:
Why boisterous play is important for children’s development
How boisterous play can support children to be resilient How to encourage varying types of play (Deep, mastery, locomotor etc) How to support children’s physical development and personal, social and
emotional wellbeing through rumbustious activities Course Leader/s: Inspired Children Services: Ben Kingston-Hughes
