What if I were totell you that not allyour oral problems re-sult from dental prob-lems? Yes, it’s possi-ble. The mouth havinga rich blood supplycan be a window to anyunusual activity go-ing on in different or-gans of our body. Let’ssee how:

1. BAD BREATH:While bad breath canresult from improperbrushing and ineffec-tive cleaning of thetongue in most cases, fewer patients may befacing the same owingto problems deep seat-ed in the body. A per-son suffering from se-vere acidity and refluxdisease can experiencebad breath. Similarly,a fruity breath may beobserved in diabeticketoacidosis a compli-cation of uncontrolleddiabetes. In late stag-es of kidney failure,an ammonical orurine- like smell maycome from the mouth. An unpleasant sweetsmell may be indica-tive of liver cirrhosisor other diseases of theliver. A foul breathpoints towards a lunginfection such as tu-berculosis.

2. BLEEDING: Acertain amount of

TOOTH BE TOLD

Oral Health: An indicatorof your overall health?

bleeding is associatedwith gum diseases. Butcontinuous bleeding insmall amounts fromgums in absence of anyapparent gum problemscould point to bleedingdisorders, vitamin Kdeficiency and even liv-er failure.

3. ALTERED TASTE:Not being able to enjoyyour food can be upset-ting. This could be dueto reduced taste sensa-tion by the tongue. Thisreduced taste could bedue to an iron deficien-cy or in some cases evenzinc and vitamin A de-ficiency.

4. ULCERS ANDTONGUE LESIONS: Cer-tain blood disorders cancause ulcers whichmay come and go overperiods of time. Highlevels of stress can alsoinduce ulcers in themouth. They alsopresent in case of nutri-tional deficiency suchas vitamin B deficien-cy and anemia. Anemiccondition can cause asmooth red tongue aswell.

5. EROSION ANDTOOTH SENSITIVITY:

While most conditionsmay show up throughchanges in the gums, severe acid reflux dis-ease can cause acidsfrom the stomach tocome all the way up tothe mouth. This con-dition increases theacidic pH of the oralcavity. In such a con-dition, the surface ofthe tooth gets erodedand enamel is lost ex-posing the nerveswithin the tooth to theenvironment in themouth. This causessevere sensitivity ofthe teeth to hot andcold beverages.

6. R E D U C E DSALIVATION: Reducedsaliva secretion canpoint to a stressful lif-estyle of an individu-al. Being exposed tostressful situationscan trigger release ofreduced amounts ofsaliva. Hence, a life-style modification is agood solution in sucha case. Also, certainanti depressant medi-cations and certainothers as well can al-ter the rate of salivaproduction.

With this truthbomb, I wish to tellyou all that most ofyour dental problemsusually originatefrom problems in themouth. But in a rareoccurrence, yourmouth could be point-ing to something elsewrong in your body.

Eco friendly celebrations- Need of the hourOne of the biggest festivals of the year, Ganesh Utsav is just

around the corner and like every year, devotees are leaving nostones unturned to welcome Bappa, the God of success and pros-perity. Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated with great pomp and zealespecially across Maharashtra and people enthusiastically partic-ipate in the celebrations. Devotees bring home an idol of LordGanesha and worship it for a period of 10 days or less. They alsoerect pandals in their housing societies or neighbourhood areasand keep Ganpati statues and idols for public Darshan followingwhich the idol is immersed in water during Ganesh Visarjan. How-ever, this year, due to Covid pandemic, the situation will be a littledifferent.

Maintaining our legacy and heritage is undoubtedly very im-portant and celebrating festivals with zeal and enthusiasm helps inmaintaining our cultural identity and letting our future generationknow about values and tradition. However, with the growing mag-nitude of celebrations and revelry, it is highly pertinent to takeinto account the impact on current and futuristic resources.

While festivals should be celebrated with fervour, its impact onMother Nature should not be over looked. It does not take toomuch to be Eco-Friendly, only a little understanding and will. Cel-ebrating the Ganesh festival is not about how big the idol is or howexpensive is the decoration. Rather, it is about the religious sen-timent, emotion and feelings in our hearts. By opting for Eco Friend-ly Ganesha idols which are made from paper pulp, natural coloursand natural gums, we can do our bit for our environment as re-sponsible citizens. Plaster of Paris is non-biodegradable and it badlyaffects the aquatic life and water bodies. Natural products can beused to make the idol such as unbaked clay, coconut, paint withnatural colours, etc. We have to try to completely avoid non-de-gradable material like plastic and thermocol, which add more dan-ger to our environment when dumped as garbage later. Insteadpaper flowers or natural flowers can be used for decoration andnatural materials like cloth, wood and paper can be used to makedolls, bells and other pieces of decoration.

Likewise, we can offer prasad, fruits in paper cups or in clothbags. To curb noise pollution, music can be played on low volume.By using artificial tank or artificial immersion tank instead of nat-ural water sources like river, lake or pond, we can immensely helpin conserving our water bodies.

Religious believes are to be followed with immense purity notonly for ourselves but also for nature. It is rightly said that wehave not inherited nature from our ancestors but have borrowed itfrom our future generations. Let us take pledge to celebrate allthe festivals in an Eco Friendly manner and do our bit in conserv-ing nature. In the present scenario, it would be prudent to havelow key celebration and refrain from going out for public darshan. While carrying our immersion process, again it would be wise tomake it simple and if possible have immersion at home only.

Water position precariousIt is indeed a bad news that Mumbai city’s lakes have 50% less water thanlast year and no water cut is imposed as yet. With monsoon rains playinghide and seek the position is not clear when we will get the full quota ofrains. The cumulative water quantity in lakes is alarming and only 28%stock is available. At a time Assam flood toll mounts other parts of thecountry lacks sufficient rains. The stock in lakes stood at a little more than4 lakh million litres which is short of the requirement. The position isbecoming bad to worse and unless we get sufficient rains in the next coupleof months, BMC may be forced to have water cuts in the days to come.

Solar Energy “ Sure, Pure& Secure” – PM Modi

By Vinod C. Dixit

Recently our PM Narendra Modihas dedicated to the Nation the RewaUltra Mega Solar Power project to theNation which is Asia's largest powerproject. While inaugurating our PMsaid that the Rewa project will makethe entire region a major hub for pureand clean energy in this decade. Hepraised the effort in that it will alsosupply power to the Delhi Metro, along with the entire region surround-ing Rewa. Theproject is 750-megawatt ultramega solar powerplant will reduceemission equiva-lent to approxi-mately 15 lakhtonne of carbon di-oxide every year. Itis to be appreciat-ed that the government has plannedto overcome the challenge by launch-ing the schemes like development ofsolar parks and ultra mega solar pow-er projects in India. With the launchof this solar project Madhya Pradeshwill be the main centre of Solar En-ergy in India, as such major projectsare in progress in Neemuch,Shajapur, Chattarpur andOmkareshwar and the much benefi-ciaries of this would be the poor, themiddle class, the tribals, the farmersof Madhya Pradesh, he said.

The Rewa Ultra Mega Solar Lim-ited (RUMSL), a joint venture of state-owned Solar Energy Corporation ofIndia (SECI) and Madhya PradeshUrja Vikas Nigam Ltd (MPUVNL),comprises three solar generatingunits of 250MW each located on a 500-hectare plot of land inside a solarpark with a total area of 1500 hect-are. An advantage of this form of en-ergy is that it is cost effective to usesuch products. Even though the ini-tial installation costs are comparablyhigher, their maintenance and otherexpenses are very low.

PM Modi described Solar Energyas one which is ‘Sure, Pure & Se-

cure’. Sure because of the continuoussupply of Energy from the Sun, Pureas it is environment friendly and Se-cure because it is a secure source forour energy needs. He termed suchSolar Energy projects are a true rep-resentation of Aatmanirbhar Bharat(Self-Reliant India).

Promoting the use of solar energyin replacement with many other tech-nologies will help in the reduction ofpollution as well as the destruction of

many other non-re-newable energies.Referring to theongoing crisis ow-ing to the pandem-ic COVID-19, thePM Modi rightlysaid that for eitherthe Government orthe society, com-passion and vigi-

lance are the greatest motivators totackle this difficult challenge. He saidright from the beginning of the Lock-down the Government ensured thatthe poor and needy are assured ofsupply of food and fuel. He said withthe same spirit, the Government de-cided to continue the free supply offood and LPG till November this year, even during the phase of unlockdown.

It is to be agreed that the utiliza-tion of solar energy can become a boonto lots of people but the high cost ofits equipment and devices stop peo-ple from using it. Solar energy is oneenergy source that does not negative-ly affect the environment and cannotbe exhausted. Solar energy also putsless burden on the other forms of non-renewable resources and protects theearth from various types of pollutions. The government should take somesteps to reduce the cost of solar ener-gy’s equipment so that people canmake the best use of it for their ben-efits. There is no doubt that the wayIndia’s is utilising solar power, it isgoing to be discussed further and isbeing considered as the most attrac-tive market of clean energy. The writer is a freelancer.
