Ahen my client asks for my opinion of a 8ob can"i"ate, I look at the resumC or cv, checking-

• what are past contributions6 verifiable results/ complete" pro8ects;

• is the e4perience relevant to the 8ob6

• what are the lengths of gaps in employment6

• "o I un"erstan" everything6 consistency;

*esi"e these points I look for something specific- is the can"i"ate a learner-for-life6 If a cv

shows that after gra"uation the person ha" no further formal learning, I have my "oubts.

 =esDyou may argue the workplace is a learning e4perience- true. 'o what can "ecent formal

Ahen I worke" for a %utch bank, )M years ago, a particular work ethic ha" come to life.

#ain characteristic- "evotion to work is everything, private life is no priority. In my bank

the IT "epartment, le" by a "ynamic manager, was the first to a"opt this new work ethic.

Ahen you&" take your career seriously, you&" work overtime most evenings. Jnpai" of

course. =ou woul" come to work on your free 'atur"ays, an" spen" 'un"ay evening pre

were young single. They ha" a glare in their eyes as if they belonge" to a religious cult.

The manager ha" turne" them into blin" followers. 5fter some time the price of this new

business culture became evi"ent- some staffDin particular, those with familyDreali:e"

that this wasn&t the kin" of work they signe" up for. Two figures starte" to increase- N ofstressrelate" sick leave, an" N of staff turnover. lus- failing customer service. %vertime
