by Earl Norman Dunn

The last issue introduced the Family Bible, how it was found, identified, andrestored. This issue will address the births of some of the original folks who cameover from Ireland in the 1840's and 50's. As a refresher to those who read the firstarticle and to first time readers, the first entry by James in the 1853 Bible is found onOld Testament page 786:

Let's look at the remainder of the entries on page 786:

Then, at the top of page 787 in James' hand\\-Titing again:

Looks like Timothy, tenth child of James and Ellan was the first inheritor ofthe Bible. Now, let's look at the birthdates. The entries about James father's andmother's birthdates demonstrate a common way of expressing dates - leave out thezeros. Therefore, Thomas was born in 1802 [collaborated by his naturalizationpapers of 1888 and 1890, Superior Court of Vermont, Orleans County Courthouse,Newport, VT. Thomas received his U.S. citizenship on 13 September 1890.] and

Mary was born on 15 August 1800. Now,let's see if we can positively identify James C.Dunn's birthdate. In the surviving End Paper after theOld Testament, in what appears to be James'handwriting, is information pertaining to the arrivalof Dunn family members to the United States:

October the 25 1848 James Dunn landed inNew YorkNovember the 1 1849 Ellen Dunn landed inNew York

Using these arrival dates, a search was madeat the National Archives in Washington, DC of theships arriving in New York. There are severalreferences that list ship manifests. However there isone problem throughout: the manifest is datedsometime between the sailing date and the date theship arrives in port. In some (perhaps most)instances the manifest is created as the passengers areloaded at the port of embarkation.

The annotations in the Bible list arrival datesin New York. Lets look at James Dunn first since hecame to the United States about a year ahead ofEllen. Given that James arrived in New York on 25October 1848, he probably came over on theAshburton, which sailed out of Liverpool, England onor about 18 October 1848 (manifest dated 18 October1848). The handwriting on the manuscript is a bitdifficult to interpret, but passenger 102 is listed asJames Dunne, age 24, Laborer, from Ireland (anotherresearcher translated the name as James Dume, however a close look with the assistance of amagnifying glass supports the Dunne interpretation. Also, Dunne is a common spelling as well as Dunn). This leads to another dichotomy if this is our JamesDunn: assuming that February 12th is his birthday(lightly entered in the Dunn Family Bible) then the 24years of age on the 1848 Ashhurton manuscriptwould have him born in 1824. The exact age of aperson is sometimes difficult to determine, asdifferent documents will indicate different datesbecause of misunderstandings or clerical errors.

Further research in August 1995 at theOrleans County Court House, Newport, VT,discovered a wooden box containing the oldestpapers there and are not filed. The last two loose

papers in back of the box are declarations of a JamesDunn applying for U.S. Citizenship. The first of thesetwo handwritten papers:

James Dunn of Newport, was born in KifKenny County, Ireland, inFeby. 1818 - makes declaration of intentionto become a citizenof the U.S.June 251868.

The second handwritten paper:

To the Honorable County Court within &forthe County of Orleans- now in Session.

The petition of James Dunn of Newportin the said County ofOrleans shiwith Iswarith? I that he was bornin the County of KifKenny Ireland on the 25 day of JanuaryA.D. 1818, emigrated tothe United States in the year 1848 & has eversince residedtherein and has resided in the town ofNewportfor the last 21years, and that on the 25th day of June A.D.1868 he madedeclaration of his intention, in due form, inthis court, tobecome a citizen of the United States asappears of record.Wherefore he prays that he may be made acitizen of the UnitedStates.Dated at Irasburgh this 12th day of Sept1872

Reviewing the documents that haveinformation that can be used to calculate JamesDunn's birth - there are seven different answers:1815,1817,1818,1819,1822,1823, and 1824!

The documents are:

Now lets tum our attention to Ellen, JamesDunn's wife. Ellen is the daughter of John Croakeand Bridget Coogan. Ellen came to the United Statesabout a year after James, arriving in New York on INovember 1849 according to the Bible entry. Theship that Ellen came over on was probably theIvanhoe with a manifest date of 19 October 1849 alsosailing out of Liverpool, England. The manifestshowed the following individuals:

Peggy Auger letter Dec 1992: died age 58 [in 1873] -born 1815

VT Census 1870: age 53 --born 1817

1st Citizenship Petition of25 Jun 1868born Febl818

2nd Citizenship Petition of 12 Sep 1872born 25 Jan 1818

Dunn Family Bible: born 1819 [original date markedout] -- born 1819VT Census 1860: age 38--

born 1822VT Census 1850: age 27--

born 1823Ashburton Manifest: age 24 [in 1848] --

born 1824

Some more research is indicated here' TheBurial Certificate from the Sacred Heart CatholicChurch in Stanstead, Quebec, Canada lists JamesDunn's date of death as 27 November 1873 and dateof burial as 29 November 1873 but does not list hisage. He is buried in the old cemetery there and in1993 the old cemetery was under renovation by theStanstead Historical Society and a marker for JamesDunn could not be found. Also the Parish Priest,Father Malouin, noted in his 23 August 1993 letterthat there was no plan of the old cemetery. Adescendant of James Dunn at the Dunn FamilyReunion in Vernon, VT in July 1993 indicated that amarker for James Dunn had been seen in thecemetery. Perhaps after the Stanstead HistoricalSociety finishes their renovation, the marker can befound (it may lead to even another possible birthdate!)

Ellen's case is somewhat better than James'because four of the six sources agree, and the othertwo are not too far off.

Ellen may have needed to be 20 years old toemigrate on her own (she reportedly ran away fromher father) so she might have just stretched her agesomewhat in order to deal with the circumstances, which could account for the different age on theIvanhoe manifest. The entry in the Dunn FamilyBihle is clear for Ellen, not marked over like J.ames'was, so the 1831 birth date which is also supportedby two out of three Vermont censuses seems correct.

The passage duration was about two weeks atthat time, making a landing in New York on 1November 1849 reasonable. It seems that EllenCroke/Croak/Croake (sp?) used her maiden name onthe voyage. An interpretation of the above data maybe as follow: Thomas Dunn is accompanying EllenCroke/Croak/Croake (sp?), the unwed wife-to-be ofhis brother James C. Dunn, and Mary Dunn thedaughter of James and Ellen, to America where Ellenmarries James. No record of their marriage has as yetbeen found. James, Ellen, and Mary show up on the1850 Vermont census in Irasburg, Vermont. Now letsaddress the age of Ellen.
