No charge, just a contribution towards the cake! Workshop - December 17th 1.30 to 4.30pm STAINED GLASS WORKSHOP WITH ANN PENGELLY Ann has been creating new commissioned pieces for 21 years and runs stained glass courses at her studio in Seaton. This excellent, enjoyable film by the Cohen brothers is loosely based on a week in the life of a struggling folk musician in Greenwich Village in the bitter winter of 1961. Llewyn Davis is not a particularly likeable hero - sponging off his friends who are trying to help him and getting his friend's wife (Carey Mulligan) pregnant. Terrific atmosphere, great music and a wonderful ginger cat. (For one night only: cats half price). On 28th November we have "Belle", a period drama (cert.12A). Belle is inspired by the true story of an illegitimate mixed race daughter of a Royal Navy Admiral in late 18th century England. Her lineage affords her certain privileges but her colour prevents her from participating fully. She falls for the young vicar's son and together they help shape the end of slavery. Gugu Mabatha-Raw (Belle) is joined by Tom Wilkinson, Emily Watson, Matthew Goode, Miranda Richardson and Penelope Wilton. "This will be big" say the critics. On 12th December we have "Fading Gigolo", a light comedy/drama (cert.15). The Woody Allen film that Mr. Allen never made, leaving it to John Torturro who plays a cash strapped bloke who tries his hand at making money as an escort for glamorous ladies. TATWORTH WIVES GROUPHester Down writes:

At our meeting on 4th September Pauline Matherick talked tous about her manna puppets and then put on a puppet show. After briefly outlining the history of puppets, she explainedthe different types of puppets which could be used, howuseful they could be for helping children to communicate andhow they could also hold a special appeal for adults. With thehelp of her two colleagues and the use of her portabletheatre, we then enjoyed a very entertaining puppet show.

Afterwards we were allowed to try using the puppetsourselves. Most of us found it made our arms ache, but one ofour number proved to be quite accomplished and was allowedto put on her own show using the theatre. It was great funand very enjoyable evening.

Our next meeting will be at Tatworth Church Rooms onThursday 2nd October at 7:30pm when our speaker will be theRev. Tim Price who will talk about the second part of hissabbatical last year when he followed in his father’s footstepsduring the Second World War. This will be an open meetingand everyone is welcome.

TATWORTH & DISTRICT HORTICULTURAL SOCIETYKen Johnson, writes:Tatworth & District Horticultural Society’s 54th Annual OpenDay was held in Tatworth Memorial Hall on Saturday 23rd

August 2014. Chard Mayor, Jenny Kenton, officially declaredthe Show open, and subsequently presented cups and trophiesto the various class winners. The standard of exhibits wasagain very high this year, and it was encouraging that severalfrom outside the normal catchment area supported the Showfor the first time. The number of exhibits in the vegetableand fruit section was limited due to the unpredictable seasonsthis year. As a result of fine weather, the plant stall was sitedin the car park and the overall income from the Show wassupported by proceeds from the Grand Raffle and teas.

Thanks are extended to everyone who supported the Showhelping behind the scenes, exhibiting and attending on theday. Thanks are also extended to the Co-operative RetailStore, Chard for its donation to the Grand Raffle.

The Society's Autumn meetings will be held in the TatworthMemorial Hall commencing at 19.30 hours on Thursdays asfollows:

October GardenTony Arnold ACIHort, writes:

As temperatures sadly start dropping away, and nights draw in,there is a likelihood of first frosts, so do take action to moveyour Summer tender plants and bulbs into a container andideally into a porch or conservatory which may have someheating during winter. Bubble wrap containers if possible, itworks well. Autumn gales can occur in the southwest so checkthat any vulnerable tall shrubs and trees are secured againstbrittle branches which can snap easily. Climbers also can beblown down. Average sunshine is reasonably high 107 hours inthis month so you can enjoy the last remnants of Autumncolour in your garden.

• Clear falling leaves from the lawn; if possible store somein bags with holes to produce valuable leaf mould and tieup.

• Remove detritus, dead dying and diseased matter as theseare perfect habitats for over wintering pathogensincluding viruses. Infected material such as rose blackspot leaves should be burnt, not composted. Vegetablessuch as courgettes and marrows, if at the end of theircropping time, should all be burnt to avoid soil infection.Kitchen/vegetable gardens need a very thorough clear outto give the soil a rest.

• Reduce mowing frequency and allow grass a little moreheight over winter to strengthen against moss and weeds.Scarifying and top dressing will pay dividends to your lawnfor next summer by removing much more thatch than youwill believe is nestling amongst the grass.

• Prepare ground for planting shrubs and trees, new hardyherbaceous perennials and bare root plants (roses) willneed to be planted.

• Prune/trim conifers (not old wood), climbers andperennials should be cut back (check pruning required foryour plants on RHS web site if unsure). Now is the timeto divide perennials and dahlias are best lifted and storedupside down in a cool dry wooden tray.

• Plant spring bulbs now you will be well rewarded. Saveseeds in paper bags and plant annual sweet pea seeds, recommended in October.

Enjoy the wonderful Autumn colours and a pat on the back fora lot of hard work over the year.

TATWORTH WOMEN'S INSTITUTE Report from meeting held on August 21st 2014

Before commencing the business members took part in a CraftTaster Session where we had the chance to try CandleDecorating, Crochet, Necklace Making and Card Making. Eachmember could try two of the four activities, the instructorsbeing from other WI groups. During crochet we made smallrosettes which were then turned into brooches. Necklaceswere made not of beads but by using lengths of special yarnwhich were either twisted or crocheted and produced veryunusual and attractive pieces. Members could take homewhatever they made.

The business of the meeting began and minutes of the lastmeeting were taken as read. There were no matters arising.Various items of correspondence were on the table forinformation and details of forthcoming events were displayed.

The Kurling tester session proved popular so it was agreed tofund raise with a view to buying a Kurling set so that we canplay this in the winter instead of croquet. We plan to continuewith Tai Chi again for the next half-term.

Barbara volunteered to attend the “Heart Start” Defibrillatorcourse on November 1st on behalf of the WI.

New Members Needed for Tai Chi GroupOur Tai Chi group meets on a Friday morning from 9:30 to11:00. We are all fairly new but several members have had to

drop out for various reasons, which means we now have ashortfall of about 3 people needed to make the groupfinancially viable. If anyone would be interested in joining usthey would be welcomed with open arms!

For more information please call Angela on 01460 220953 –you do not have to be a WI member.

PERRY STREET CLUBJenny Scott writes:

We will be installing a new touch screen till system in both thedownstairs bar and the function hall upstairs. There areseveral reasons for this:

1. The existing tills are old and not easily programmable foreither new products or price changes,2. They provide us with very little information about sales, product profitability or trends,3. We are unable to differentiate between Members and non-Members.The new system will give us a complete analysis of sales acrossproduct range, day by day and even hour by hour. It will alsoallow a two-tier pricing system to be introduced.

Each Member will be issued with a numbered card which, onproduction to the bar staff, will entitle the Member to adiscounted price. Cards will be available soon as Bar staff willbe instructed that no card means no discount.

We will be selling our Christmas Draw tickets during Octoberand November. The prize money might not match the NationalLottery but, with only 2000 tickets available, your chance ofwinning is much better.

Calling all Craft enthusiasts, wood-carvers, card-makers andtoy makers in the community!

We will be holding a Christmas Craft Fair on Saturday 28thNovember from 10am to 2pm in the function room; tablecharge £5 per table. If you would like to book a table pleasecontact the Club Secretary on 01460 220239 or [email protected]
