    "Fine," Draco replied, scowling a

    "What?"

    "Muggle expression."

Al shook his head. "I wish you would sto

Rose rolled her eyes. "What? Are yo

The invisibility cloak fell from Rose'

head as she looked up at the large crysta

Rose began to walk around the roo

rying to imagine where her mother habeen standing when her father and Uncl

Harry had rushed in to save her. He

concentration was so intense that Malfoy'

entrance through a side door didn't evecause her to glance in his direction unti

    he spoke.

"What in the fuck are you doing hereWeasley?"

Rose turned her head in his direction an

t immediately occurred to her thaScorpius was just about the same age a

his father would have been when he

mother was tortured. Would he have been

able to stand in this room and watch a

    nnocent person being Cruciated? Would

he have spoken out on her behalf eve

hough it went against family's allegianceRose didn't know him well enough t

udge, but surely Al wouldn't be friend

with Malfoy if he held the same bloo

    views as his ancestors.

Scorpius took several steps toward her

"I'm serious, Weasley. Just what in the

world do you think that you're doing hereMy father will kill me if he finds out tha

    girls snuck into my gathering."

    Rose blinked rapidly. "Girl."

    "What?"

    15/46

"Girl, not girls. I think I'm the only gir

    here."

"I'm not in the mood for a grammaesson," Scorpius stated angrily. "I wan

you to leave now. I've got a good mind to

hrow your good-for-nothing cousin out o

he Manor, too. I can't believe he broughyou with him.

"Don't blame, Al. I begged him to let m

come. I figured it might be my onlchance."

"You're only chance for what?" Scorpiu

asked, looking at her suspiciously. "Youaren't going to make a play for Zabini ar

would never suit. He's much to

who won't fawn over him night and day."

"I didn't come here to see Zabini, buhanks for the warning," she smiled.

"So why are you here? What possibl

nterest could you have in my home? Or ihis like those barmy wartime anniversar

ours that start every May when bus load

of pilgrims line up at the gates to catch o

a glimpse of Voldemort's oldheadquarters. I expected better of yo

Weasley, than to treat my family and my

residence as some sort of freak show."

Rose couldn't help but wonder why in th

They never spent time together. Sure, h

was friends with Al, but she had a hard

ime believing that her cousin spent a lo

of time talking to Mafoy about her.

"I did want to look around," she admitted.

"Figures," Scorpius said. "I don't knowwhy I expected you to be different... bette

    han the rest."

"I'm not here out of some idle curiosityMalfoy. I wanted... needed to see thi

"Why in the hell did you need to see thiroom?"

    Scorpius nodded curtly. "Everyone know

hat. It's in the fifth year history of magiextbook. They were brought here b

snatchers, but managed to escape befor

    Voldemort returned."

"Yeah," Rose said looking around the

room. "But do you know what happene

    before they escaped?"

Scorpius shrugged. "They were put in th

    cellar right?"

Rose shook her head. "My dad and UnclHarry were locked up. But my mum wa

Scorpius eyes grew large and he looke

    around the room intently. "Here?"

    "Yeah."

"No wonder my dad refuses to ever use italways thought it was a bit strang

because it is one of the nicest rooms in th

house and he isn't one to hide the famil

wealth under a bushel. Whenever I askemum, she claimed that it was just one o

    dad's little quirks."

"Maybe it gives him nightmareremembering what he saw happen here."

Scorpius shook his head. "He couldn

    "Rose he wasn't here."

"It was during Easter holiday. He wa

"Fuck," Scorpius muttered sitting dowheavily in a nearby armchair. "You're

    She nodded.

    chuckled weakly. "Wishful thinking, suppose."

    Rose smiled sympathetically. "Anyways,

didn't come to gawk or to tell you abouany of this. I just wanted to see where i

happened. Try to imagine what it mus

    have been like for them."

"Do you feel better having seen it?

    Scorpius asked. He looked tired

    frustrated, and ashamed.

"Not really. But maybe I will after

    process it."

  • 7/29/2019 The Drawing Room

    22/46

"Right, let me know how that goes."

Rose bent down and picked up th

nvisibility cloak. "I'm really sorry I snucn, Scorpius. I won't do it again."

He nodded, but didn't meet her eyes.

Rose flung the cloak over her head an

made her way back to the Floo in th

    dining room.

    New Years Eve 2024

Scorpius had convinced his parents t

allow him to again stay home for the NewYears holiday and to host a party for both

Slytherin wizards and witches. That hadn

been thrilled with the idea, but he wa

responsible and an adult and determine

    so they had eventually consented

    evertheless, before they left fo

    Morocco dire consequences had bee

promised should any furniture end ustained or any glassware broken.

The party was a smashing success. Almos

all of the sixth and seventh year Slytherinhad come bringing with them dates fro

he other houses. Al had brought Rose. "

can't be your date!" she'd exclaimed whe

he first mentioned it. "It is too creepyPeople will get the wrong idea."

"You are just worried about losing you

good girl image and tarnishing your Hea

    Girl badge."

"I don't think it will be any fun. I'm no

really friends with any of people in you

house but you and Will Decker. And I'm

only friends with him because w

patrolled together in fifth year. BesidesDominique and I have tickets to th

    Celestina Warbeck reunion tour."

"Well, then you should be thanking me fosaving you from that. Besides Malfo

made me promise to bring you."

    "He did?"

Al nodded. "Don't ask me what he's up to

He's plays his cards too close to his ches

    for me to catch on."

When the pair stepped out of the Floo the

had followed the sound of music an

alking down the hall and into the drawin

room. Al walked in unconcerned and

began greeting his friends, but Rose stoo

frozen in the doorway. How couldScorpius have had a party in this of al

rooms? Did he want her here to punish he

n some way? Maybe he was showing he

hat he didn't care about what hahappened to her mother, that he would us

he room in anyway he wanted withou

consideration of what it might mean to he

    and her family.

As the shock started to wear off sh

glanced around and saw Scorpius standin

by a table covered with snacks and drinks

There were two sixth year Slytherin girl

on either side of him, who appeared to b

flirting. He laughed and seemed to b

enjoying the attention, although his eye

constantly scanned the room as if he wer

    ooking for something. They eventuall

    anded on her.

Rose wanted to turn around and leave, bu

was rooted to the spot by the door. Sh

watched Scorpius excuse himself from thgirls before coming to her side.

"So what do you think?" he asked, a larg

    smile on this face.

    "What do I think?"

"Yeah. Isn't this great? I would have lovedo invite more people but Mom put he

Rose nodded jerkily. She could feel tear

welling up in her eyes, which was stupidWhy did she care if Scorpius Malfoy wa

    a big jerk?

"Are you upset?" he asked staring into heface. "I thought you'd be impressed."

"Why in the world would I be impresse

with this?" she asked astounded at hieffrontery. "It's disrespectful to throw

stupid party in here and treat this roo

you know about the horror perpetratehere."

"I suppose that is one way to look at it,

Scorpius admitted, shifting on his fee

    slightly.

"Is there really any other way to see it?"

"Of course," he told her with a tiny smile

"We are clearing all of those old dreadfu

memories out of this room and replacinhem with better ones. I refused to give th

actions of an insane woman twenty-fiv

years ago the power to define how I liv

Malfoy to spend the night dancing with th

daughter of Ron and Hermione Weasley

on the exact spot your mum was torture

for her blood status all those years ago?"

Rose remained silent for several second

and thought about what Scorpius had said

Was he right? Was it better to treat theMalfoy's drawing room as some sort o

mausoleum to what her parents ha

suffered during the war or to cover th

memories of that confrontation witexperiences that demonstrated just how fa

he wizarding world had moved awa

from the elitist ideology of the past? Sh

finally smiled at Scorpius. "Who said

wanted to spend the evening dancing wit

    you?"

  • 7/29/2019 The Drawing Room

    30/46

"It doesn't matter if you want to or not," h

said with a smirk, "you need to dance wit

me. Good memories covering the bad an

    all that."

Rose shook her head, but smiled up a

him. "Is this some plot you've develope

o get me into your arms?"

Although a slight blush rose over Scorpiu

cheeks, his mouth quirked up in response

"You've discovered my deep, dark secretRose. I've been carrying at torch for yo

for years and this was the only way

could convince you to give me a go.

figure after dancing with me for severa

hours, you'll eventually cave in and agre

"You think I'm the type of girl who would

be swayed by a talented dancing?"

"Dancing, witty conversation, and mpretty face."

Rose giggled. "Don't push your luck

Scorpius. You can have two dances. Thashould be enough for you to char

    yourself past my defenses."

Scorpius shook his head at her resistancebut nevertheless led her into the middle o

he drawing room to join the others wh

    were dancing. Afterwards, Rose grabbed

a glass of Firewhiskey and mingled withe other Hogwarts students at the party.

She danced a couple of times with othe

Scorpius and watch him play host. H

moved easily round the room refillin

drinks, urging couples to dance, andancing himself with several unattache

witches. This last situation tended to mak

Rose clench her teeth in annoyance.

As it neared midnight, the guests a

Malfoy's party began to pair up. No on

wanted to be left without someone to kis

She rose and decided that the only way t

She shook her head. "No, I just need to us

"It's going to have to wait," he told her"It's almost midnight."

"It's an emergency," she said wit

They were supposed to meet here befor

heading to the Leaky Cauldron t

celebrate the New Year with Al and his

girlfriend. Scorpius was probably stilgetting dressed. Rose had been amused t

Tapping her fingers against the banister

Rose considered going up to his room thurry him along. It didn't take her long

    "What?"

    "What are you thinking about?

"I was thinking that you take longer to geready to go out than a group of thirtee

"Ha, ha... seriously, what are you thinkinabout?"

Rose turned around to look at him in th

Rose nodded. "What do you think abou
