    To

Walk A gentle climb to Bonaly Reservoir Length 6 miles

Dogs on walk Archie, Gina, Finlay, Jerry, Martha, Solo, Tim, Struan,

    Talaidh

Those observant amongst you will notice a lot of dogs. A serious miscount by me led to

Struan and Talaidh tagging along when I thought they would make it up to eight. Umm

how come I have nine? Back to finger counting in the future I think. We all squeezed in to

the car anyway, Talaidh taking the from passenger seat. Travelling in style.

What may have been a little traumatic for Martha a couple of months ago was nothing

today. She took in her stride, making sure she got a window seat. To get Finlay in with his

car issues, meant Struan getting out first and then hopping back in behind him. He should

not feel at all embarrassed by it. Archie sometimes has his challenges although an empty

boot was easy enough for him today. Not so when it came to Solo getting in. He needed a

lift up. And very unusually so too did Gina who needed a helping hand to squeeze in

between Archie and Solo. Tim on the other hand almost blindly leapt into the even smaller

space between them. And Jerry a little more gingerly found himself some space on the

    back seat.

Soon they all piled out again as we were ready to set off up the rutted track leading to the

hills and the prize of Bonaly Reservoir. The sun was back and it tried to heat the earth and

the air but the temperatures never rose much and were half beaten back by the gusting

    wind.

We were partly sheltered by the old gnarled Scots Pine trees running along beside the

track now with exposed stone. Scoured by the wet summer. Happy dogs, several withmouths open wandered along the track. It rose gently to a gate and out onto low

moorland of very long wiry grass. Waving in the wind in faded colours suggesting and end

too summer is almost with us. Gina and Jerry bursting from the grass as they scouted

around picking us traces of scents. Or more like Gina following Jerry who was doing the

    scent finding.

It was not only scents he was interested in. In a rather unusual display of friendliness heput himself in the middle of creating the fun. First trying to get Struan to play and then

picking up on Archie who had run into the grass and balls of purple heather. Gina of course

was right behind him and Tim thrust his way through the heather to also take part.

Martha watched the fun. One day she may join it. But for now she as more than content

to tramp along the path with Solo and Finlay. Finlay setting a good pace. Was he trying to

get to the reservoir all the sooner? Jerry did manage to get Struan running and soonfound him running by him thundering along like a horse. Jerry for once struggling to keep

    up.

Glinting on the horizon Bonaly Reservoir called out to us. I had a task to keep the dogs to

heel. Thankfully I managed to because hidden over the other side of the grass banked dam

was a cyclist having a sit down by the water. He may have been in it if I had not

    restrained them.

He sat and watched as the dogs plunged into the reservoir with water surging upward

sparkling with colour into the air like fractured rainbows. Breaking his peace they dashed

and swam back and forth chasing the splash of stones. An occasional excited back hitting

    back from the trees.

All too soon for some of them we were back on the path and making our way back towardthe shoulder of Harbour Hill and our homeward journey. Archie not too upset to leap into

the deep heather which almost drowned Tim as Gina lay down to taunt him looking like

    she was swimming in it.

With the rolling hills ahead of us we began to gently drop down toward the wider track.

Puffs of cloud drifting across the sky casting dark shadows in the grass as they passed by.The track led us briskly back to the trees and the rutted water scoured track back to the

    car.
