ThisisapublicdraftofastudyeditionoftheRuthenianLiturgiconoftheDivineLiturgyofSt.BasiltheGreat.Pleasehelpusfindourmistakes!
The requested review is one of content. For ease and economy in printing thedocument has been designed for duplication on standard 8‐1/2” x 11” paper. When the hardbound edition is prepared there will be a separate review forlayout. [There are currently someprayerswith awkwardpagebreaks, and thatwill be attended towhen thedocument is readied forpublication, according tothesizeselectedforthehardcoverbook.]
Thetext forthepsalmquotesremainsmostlythatwhichwasgiveninthe1964edition of the Liturgicon (most of which were an adaptation from the Douay‐Rheims translation, updated to the Septuagint, where necessary). A separatereviewofthetextsadaptedfromthePsalterisstilltocome.Itmightbeusefultoupdate these to the either the RSV‐2CE or the new Revised Grail Psalms(ConceptionAbby) (which theRomanCatholicswill beusing in their correctedliturgical texts), since there is not yet a common LXX Psalter in use by allByzantines(CatholicandOrthodox)asrecommendedintheLiturgicalInstruction(#29).
Ourplanistoprovidetimeforthosewhowishtoreviewandcommenttodoso, and then to publish this as a hardbound and online study text. We invite anysuggestionsthatwouldhelpusmakethisworkmoreaccurate.

Foreword
Thenormativeandofficial textof the“DivineLiturgyofOurFatherAmongtheSaints,BasiltheGreat” for the Ruthenian Recension is given in the typical Church Slavonic edition “ČinSvjaščennyja i Božestvennyja Liturgii” (commonly called the Služebnik), published by theauthorityof theHolyApostolicSeeofRome, andprintedby theBasilianAbbeyofSt.MaryofGrottaferrata, 1942. In 1976 a very good English translation of the text and rubrics wasprepared by the Inter‐Eparchial Liturgical Commissions of the Byzantine‐RuthenianMetropolitanProvinceandapprovedbytheHierarchyof thatProvince.Thirty‐fiveyearshavepassed,anditisreasonabletoconductareviewofthistranslationtoseeifitcanbeimprovedtomakeitmoreliterallyaccuratetotheofficialandnormativeSlavonictexts.Thisstudyeditionincludes corrections and changes (mostly affecting the clergy texts). Itwasprepared tobe infull conformance with the directives given in the “Instruction for Applying the LiturgicalPrescriptionsoftheCodeofCanonsoftheEasternChurches”(issuedin1996bytheCongregationfor the Eastern Churches), “Liturgiam Authenticam” (issued in 2001 by the Congregation forDivineWorship&theDisciplineoftheSacraments),andothersimilarinstructions.
The text of the Divine Liturgy is as given in the 1942 Služebnik, using the 1976/1964translations as a startingpoint. The text of rubrics is also from the1942Služebnik, but somehistory on this is in order. The 1976 edition used, for the most part, the translation of therubrics from the 1964 Chrysostom edition, to which they added additional rubrics from theBasil Liturgy. Most of these additional rubrics were simply directives for when the priestcelebrateswithouttheassistanceofadeacon.Inseveralplacestherubricwasthesameasthatgiven in Chrysostom but worded differently or placed in a slightly different location. TheChrysostomrubricswerealsoused in thoseplaceswheretheBasil textsimplyreferencedtheChrysostomrubrics.
The text of the rubrics been enhanced for study purposes by integrating into it thesupplemental rubrics provided in the “Ordo Celebrationis Vesperarum, Matutini et DivinaeLiturgiaeIuxtaRecensionemRuthenorum”(Rome,1944).AcarefulstudyoftheOrdosuggeststhatmanyofthesupplementaldirectivesitcontainsgreatlyenhancetheSlužebnikrubrics,andthattheyvery likelywouldhavebeen included in the1942Služebnik had theybeenavailablewhen itwaspublished. It seemed sensible to offer them in this study edition (the rubrics from the 1942SlužebnikareinredwhiletheadditionsfromtheOrdoareindarkred).Forsimplicity,althoughtheSlužebnikdoesincludesomerubricsforwhentwodeaconscelebrate,onlytheOrdorubricsforthecelebrationoftheDivineLiturgywithonedeaconhavebeenintegrated,withtheOrdorubricsfortwo deacons and no deacon having been placed in an appendix (since the celebrationwith onedeacon would be the hoped for norm in every parish). The approach to this update to the1964/1976EnglishtranslationoftheLiturgiconshasbeen“AsliteralaspossibletothenormativeSlavonictext(lookingat theGreektextbehindit, especially forScripturalreferences(whichtendtowardstheRSV/RSV‐2CEwherepossible))whilealsobeingelegant,andrespectingwhatthelayfaithfulhavememorizedasmuchaspossible”.

ConsiderationsInitsnormativeandofficialformtheRuthenianDivineLiturgyisawonderfulexampleofgood Liturgy. The scholarship in preparing the official Slavonic liturgical books of theRuthenian recension remains excellent. There are only a few updates that one mightconsider, shouldallmembersusingtherecension(CatholicandOrthodox)agree:
‐Theterm“ArchbishopandMetropolitan”inthevariousprayersisaratheroddusageasametropolitan would generally be commemorated only by his highest rank. It might beupdatedtoread“Metropolitan(Archbishop)”toallowforusageoftheliturgiconanywhere.
‐Theuseoftheterm“civilauthorities”isreasonableasit(intheplural)referstopersons(inthesingularitreferstoinstitutions).Thetradition,however,istobemorespecificthanthat,singlingouttheheadofstateforparticularmention.Further,onemightalsoenhancethereferencetothearmedforcesbaseduponVaticanII’s“ThePastoralConstitutionontheChurchintheModernWorld”(79).Doingbothofthesemightrenderthepetition:“ForthePresident of these United States, the Congress, the Supreme Court and all our civilauthorities, andforourarmedforces, theagentsofoursecurityandfreedom, thattheymayserve our country with honor, and that they may make a genuine contribution to theestablishmentofpeace, letuspraytotheLord.”

‐Neither the Služebniknor theOrdo specifically addresses the commemorative particles. The older custom was to consecrate everything on the holy discos. The newer customamongmost Byzantines is to not consecrate the commemorative particles and to delayplacing them into thechaliceuntil after thecommunionof the faithful (justbefore “SaveYourpeople”).Iftherubricsarefollowedasgivenitwouldbedifficulttodiscernbetweenthe particles broken from the NI and KA particles (from which the communion of thefaithful is given) and the commemorative particles if they are both placed in the chalicepriortothecommunionofthefaithful.
