Beguiling Dust
Usually, not always but usually, I find myself drawntowards Moses taking off his shoes to walk on holyground in Lent, this year it has been different. This yearit has been dust. Why has dust so beguiled me this year?For over 20 years I have begun Lent by marking thefaithful with the sign of the cross in ash on theirforeheads, for longer than that I have felt the sign tracedon my own forehead as I knelt before the altar. This yearthe dust remains like never before.
As I am sure I don't need to say, we all lead busy lives andthis Lent is as hectic as most so in-between the mid-weekservice and a meeting with a CoS colleague lastWednesday I sighed and thought should really do a quickbit of dusting, only I didn't. I ended up drawing crosses init instead (I tried to take a photograph but there wasn'tenough dust for it to be clear, slightly better in black andwhite.)
The dust being cleared away for the Cross.Is it too late to give up dusting for Lent and take updrawing crosses in all the dust I see?

We are meeting on Monday, FEBRUARY 3rd at 6:00p.m. in Skardon Hall. We will take care of a littlebusiness and finalize plans for our RETREAT at Debbie'Lake House, the first weekend in March.
Afterwards, we will enjoy a pizza supper andwatch the Movie, War Room on the new television inSkardon Hall. I have seen this movie several times andit is a wonderful Christian movie that I am sure you willenjoy.

One of the great biblical hymns is Philippians 2:5-11,the Kenosis Hymn, or hymn of self-emptying. This isone of the several New Testament creedal statements

found throughout the Epistles. Early church scholarPaul Bradshaw notes that the structure of NewTestament prayers, creeds and hymns are very similar,leading him to believe that portions of the NewTestament were sung by the early church. Episcopalianpriest F. Bland Tucker (1895-1984) continues thistradition by providing a metrical setting of this centraltext of our faith.
Francis Bland Tucker, a native Virginian, received hiseducation at the University of Virginia (B.A., 1914) andVirginia Theological Seminary (B.D., 1920; D.D.,1942). As an Episcopal priest, he served parishes inVirginia, Washington, D.C., and Christ Church inSavannah, Ga., where the missionary John Wesley wasa priest. Having a keen interest in hymnody, Tucker served onthe joint commission that produced the ProtestantEpiscopal Hymnal 1940 and was a language consultantto this hymnal's successor, The Hymnal 1982.
In addition to original hymns, Tucker contributedseveral translations of early Greek hymns from thesecond and third centuries. Although perhaps a lesserknown 20th-century hymn writer, Tucker received highpraise from the late British hymnologist Erik Routley,who said, "There is no better 20th-century writing ineither of our countries than is to be found in Tucker."
To appreciate the beauty of Tucker's paraphrase, onemust have the Scripture firmly in mind. The KingJames Version is cited here since it was the basis ofTucker's hymn:
"Let this mind be in you, which was also in ChristJesus: who, being in the form of God, thought it notrobbery to be equal with God: but made himself of noreputation, and took upon himself the form of a servant,and was made in the likeness of men: and being foundin fashion as a man, he humbled himself and becameobedient unto death, even the death of the cross.Wherefore God hath also highly exalted him, and givenhim a name which is above every name, that at thename of Jesus every knee should bow, of things inheaven and things in earth, and things under the earth;and that every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord,to the glory of God the Father" (Phil. 2:5-11).
Tucker's paraphrase draws directly from this centralpassage of the incarnation for its language in several
places. Stanza three begins, "Let this mind be in uswhich was in thee," a rewording very similar to thebeginning of the passage.
Stanza four is strongly reminiscent of the finalsection, "and given the name to which all knees shallbow." Stanza five begins, "Let every tongue confesswith one accord/in heaven and earth that Jesus Christis Lord," capturing the essence of the final phrases ofthe passage beautifully.
This text was written to accompany the famous hymntune SINE NOMINE ("For all the saints") by Britishcomposer Ralph Vaughan William. At the time of thewriting of his new text (1938), the hymnal committeefor the Hymnal 1940 discovered that SINE NOMINE,then under copyright, could only be used with How'stext. The committee instead substituted the tuneENGLEBERG by Charles Villiers Stanford. In TheHymnal 1982, Engleberg is set to three different texts-- "We know that Christ is raised," "When in ourmusic God is glorified," and "All praise to Thee, forthou O king divine." At Saint Jude's, each of thesetexts and the tune are frequently and enthusiasticallysung!(Dr. Hawn is professor of sacred music at PerkinsSchool of Theology at SMU.)
