IB Core Components: !Creativity, Action, Service !Extended Essay !Theory of Knowledge
The Extended Essay! The extended essay is an independent, self-directed piece of research, culminating in a 4,000-word paper. As a required component, it provides:!! practical preparation for the kinds of undergraduate research required at tertiary level! an opportunity for students to engage in an in-depth study of a topic of interest within a chosen subject.!!Emphasis is placed on the research process:!! formulating an appropriate research question! engaging in a personal exploration of the topic! communicating ideas! developing an argument.!!Participation in this process develops the capacity to:!! analyse! synthesize, and! evaluate knowledge.!!Students are supported throughout the process with advice and guidance from a supervisor (usually a teacher at the school).
Theory of Knowledge
The theory of knowledge (TOK) requirement is central to the educational philosophy of the Diploma Programme.!!It offers students and their teachers the opportunity to:!!reflect critically on diverse ways of knowing and on areas of knowledge!consider the role and nature of knowledge in their own culture, in the cultures of others and in the wider world.!!In addition, it prompts students to:!!be aware of themselves as thinkers, encouraging them to become more acquainted with the complexity of knowledge recognize the need to act responsibly in an increasingly interconnected but uncertain world.!!As a thoughtful and purposeful inquiry into different ways of knowing, and into different kinds of knowledge, TOK is composed almost entirely of questions. The most central of these is "How do we know?"!!It is a stated aim of TOK that students should become aware of the interpretative nature of knowledge, including personal ideological biases, regardless of whether, ultimately, these biases are retained, revised or rejected.!!TOK also has an important role to play in providing coherence for the student as it transcends and links academic subject areas, thus demonstrating the ways in which they can apply their knowledge with greater awareness and credibility.

What universities say about the IB Diploma:
Dr Geoff Parks, Director of Admissions at Cambridge, commented “When it comes to tutors making decisions on borderline applicants, students taking the IB stood a better chance than their A-level counterparts.” The Telegraph, 22 October 2010
“In the US, the IB Diploma is a sought-after passport to top universities from Stanford to Yale.” Katy Ricks for the Independent, 20 February 2013
“The percentage of students achieving a Diploma each year has remained constant (78-79%) over the last decade which indicates that, unlike the A Level, there has been little grade inflation.” Paula Holloway, St. Clare’s, Oxford

What Should be doing and when?
There is no correct timeline
Everyone is on a different path
But if you want to start university in Europe or North America right after you graduate from high school…
In Grade 10Consider what you want to do after high school
Understand the course requirements for your desired field of study
Listen to as many university reps as you can
Base your IB course selection on the information above.
Consider summer enrichment courses, college visits, etc.
In Grade 11

Make a list of universities that interest you
Listen to as many university reps as you can
Understand the admission requirements of the universities on that list (i.e. tests, auditions, etc.)

In Grade 12Narrow you list down to fewer than 10 preferably 5 institutions to which you intend to apply
Request letters of recommendation one month before you need them
Know all your deadlines, the SIS calendar and work back
Know what documents you will need from the school, when you will need them, and communicate this with the counselor
Take all required exams
Proof of finances, CSS Profile, FAFSA
What will you need from SIS?
The first step is always filling out the applicationTranscript - summary of grades\marks earned in Grades 9 - 12
Letters of Recommendation
Predicted Marks - What your teachers think your final IB mark will be
School Profile - explains our school to the universities
Send test scores directly to the university by the organization that gives the exam
How? And how long?
