Lend them your ear: The digitally empowered student in the elementary classroom
“Now I'm not gonna sit here and blow sunshine up your ass, Lieutenant. A good pilot is compelled to evaluate what's happened, so he can apply what he's learned.
Up there, we gotta push it. That's our job.”

Pre-Flight Checks Visible Thinking Routine 1:
Initial 3-2-1 Bridge
3 Thoughts/Ideas you have about student empowerment
2 Questions you have about student empowerment
1 Analogy you have about student empowerment
Pre-Flight ChecksOur definition of empowerment:
"bringing into a state of belief one's ability to act effectively”
Can be any stakeholder in the school
Pre-Flight ChecksEmpowerment ≠ engagement
just because a child is empowered, does not mean they’re engaged in the activity
just because you’re engaged does not mean you’re empowered
engagement + empowerment + environment = max learning potential

Take Off - Visible Thinking Routine 2
Think/Pair/Share Think:
What strategies have worked best for you in your classroom?
What areas of empowerment do you still need to work on?
What resources can you use to achieve this?
Pair/Share: Find someone at your table and pair up with them
Share your thoughts with that person
Task rules 1: GooseTo complete a series of structured tasks
The tasks can be completed in any order
All tasks must be completed
You may complete them in groups
You may not ask the presenters for help UNTIL you have asked three other participants
If you have a mustache like Goose’s or know someone who has one as good as or better than his, then you
automatically receive an extra 1,000 points
Task Rules: Maverick
Answer the open questions to complete the tasks
You should work alone
You CAN ask 2 questions maximum per task to the presenters or those around you
“And if you screw up just this much, you'll be flying a cargo plane full of rubber dog shit out of Hong Kong!”
Landing - Visible Thinking Routine:
New 3-2-1 Bridge - Revisited (Bridged)
3 Thoughts/Ideas you have about student empowerment
2 Questions you have about student empowerment
1 analogy you have about student empowerment
Landing - Conclusions
Empowerment ≠ engagement
Empowerment is typically inquiry driven
Empowerment can be done in outcome driven environments
A foundation of digital citizenship is necessary for digital student empowerment
Charlie: [to Maverick] When I first met you, you were larger than life. Look at you. You're not going to be
happy unless you're going Mach-2 with your hair on fire and you know it.
