be the differenceBe the Difference is a build on last year’s Be the Voice. Last year our theme was about the importance of speaking up and standing up. This year, it’s about walking the talk, standing out as a leader of aging services and not just saying you’re different but truly being different as a

person and as an organization. For those states like North Carolina who have 100% non profit memberships, it’s an opportunity to highlight the

importance of the not for profit difference which is so essential to our brands.

pre-conference

Many individuals, groups, and institutions are challenged with appreciating and leveraging difference. Understanding differences and appreciating inclusiveness allows an organization to be far more customer intimate - which is the key to providing good customer service and, in turn, to business success. This pre-conference diversity seminar will provide attendees with the necessary tools to develop a diversity plan.

During his 30-year human resources management career with Wachovia Corporation, Hector McEachern established the corporation’s Office of Diversity through which he steered a comprehensive cultural assessment of the organization’s workforce and designed and implemented a company-wide cultural awareness and diversity initiative. Mr. McEachern held responsibilities as manager of corporate human resources, chief diversity officer, and, most recently, executive vice president and human resources business partner director. In the latter position, he provided executive oversight of the corporation’s operating committee for human resources and other business lines, including leadership for 12 HR officers and 240 HR professionals. Not content to put all that experience on the shelf when he retired in 2009, Mr. McEachern founded The McEachern Group and now acts as its president. The firm provides guidance on human capital strategies, executive coaching and diversity leadership, organizational change through mergers and acquisitions, and organizational consulting.

opening session

As a classical violinist turned innovative composer, Kai Kight uses music as a metaphor to inspire individuals and organizations across the world to compose paths of imagination and fulfillment. Inspired by his own mother who, when diagnosed with cancer, revealed regrets of not bringing her ideas to the world, Kai is on a mission to spark a global mindset shift in which ingenuity is the norm, not the exception. In his emotionally powerful presentations, Kai performs mesmerizing original music and vulnerably shares stories from his own transformation as an artist. Kai translates these insights into takeaways that audiences can easily infuse into their own lives and work environments.

A product of Stanford University’s design and engineering program, the d. School, Kai remains fascinated by the leaders, artists, and companies who dare to be different. As both a Mayfield Fellow and Kleiner Perkins Design Fellow, Kai has proven himself as a leader of the next generation of innovative and entrepreneurial talent. As a musician, Kai has performed his original music for thousands in venues across the world, from the White House to the Great Wall of China. As a speaker, he has created impactful experiences for audiences at conferences, companies, and universities internationally. Some of his clients include The Walt Disney Company, PricewaterhouseCoopers, and the Superbowl winning Seattle Seahawks. His mesmerizing and original violin performance beautifully becomes a sonic metaphor for the core of his message: to inspire people to compose unique ideas in a world that celebrates conformity.

BETH FAIRCLOTH, CJMW ARCHITECTURE; KATHLEEN WARNER, CJMW ARCHITECTURE; ANITA HOLT, THE FOREST AT DUKE; MIKE WALLACE, SPECTRUM CONSULTANTS, INC.

As the bulk of the baby boomer generation comes into retirement age over the next ten years, new strategies are needed that can help communities evolve, balancing the expectations of prospective residents with the often opposing expectations of the current population and helping to counter competitive pressures. In recent years, as communities reposition themselves and new communities come on line, we’ve seen interior design in senior living becoming more and more influenced by hospitality design concepts. Aesthetically, injecting hospitality design concepts into interior design is a natural fit.

Seniors are the fastest growing web demographic. What do seniors expect from a website, intranet, and tech solutions within a community? The only real answer comes from the source: actual senior community members and the staff who supports them. Seniors expect their community to be equipped with technology and functionality they use in their everyday lives to promote and connect activity offline and online. The vast majority of tech solutions particularly those who claim to specialize in senior communities are missing the mark when it comes to functionality, expectations, training, and usability for staff and residents. The secret to success is a combination of tech power and process.
