President’s LetterThis month I want to begin by remembering our Club’s founders. On August 23 1869,19 gentlemen whose most remarkable quality was their diversity: capitalists, self-made merchants, soldiers, farmers, a cabinet minister, younger gentry sons, one noble heir, lawyers, commission agents, an auctioneer, investors in land or gold mining banded together to form a Club, our Club, the Northern Club.

Celebrations for the 150th are continuing through September. For those who were unable to attend the Black tie dinner I thought you might like to hear a little about it.It began with the members enjoying the Club champagne and canapes while a string quartet played.

In my welcome I acknowledged all those members who had gone before, the Presidents and Committees who had wisely governed the Club, the members of the O cer’s Club and Auckland Club who had joined us and helped to make us a stronger Club. I thanked the committees who helped make tomorrow’s Club out of todays, maintaining and enhancing our traditions of service, fellowship and leadership.

Grace was a prayer by Bishop Ross Bay said by O cers’ Club President Lindy Esslemont and included praying that the ‘food and conversation shared at the Club bring joy and blessing, that the Club a place of true community, marked out by respect and care, that all may who visit fi nd grace and hospitality.’

Alexandra Francis, a member’s daughter sang some beautiful songs as entertainment. Sir Ian Barker was one of our members who remembered being at the Club’s 100th birthday in 1969. He shared stories of what the Club was like then and we could see how much change has occurred. His entertaining speech included how at the dinner all the men where lined up in order of seniority and age to shake the hand of the guest, His Excellency Sir Arthur Porritt.

Our kitchen team led by Taai Taai made us all so proud with what can only be described as an indulgent degustation. Taai said he and his team looked back to the food of the time, what was considered special, classic, simple, elegant and crafted this menu. So we began with black sturgeon caviar on quail egg. Big Glory Bay Salmon Carpaccio, Hawkes Bay Ash Lamb Lion with pea crisps, carrot gel and gratin.

The piece de résistance for some however was created by pastry chef, Hayley, she wanted to create a historical throwback with peach melba. This had to be seen – Hayley gave this classic dessert a modern twist by creating a petit gateaux of peach, raspberry, vanilla champagne and peach crisps.

Nigel De Vere Ellery, our cellar master chose some special wines to complement the menu. He put a lot of research into the fl avours and styles that would best represent such an occasion. Starting with the Club’s own Champagne, Sancerre, and Chablis, we then enjoyed Ma Maison Pinot Noir from Martinborough and a modern Bordeaux – Chateau Brillette. Then a Muscat Beaumes de Venise and fi nished with a 10 year old Tawny port.

There were three toasts, the Loyal toast, a toast to the Club’s founding members by Past President Derek Nolan. In the fi nal speech by Hon Justice Simon Moore he spoke of how the men who formed the Club were so connected to the very beginnings of our city and how their names live on in the names of streets and suburbs even some towns, names like Arney, Morrin, Nathan, Dargaville, Owen, Gillies, Williamson and Vogel.

He spoke of the bridle post outside the Club in 1890 but that the committee felt it a step too far to accommodate the bicycle and a bylaw was passed prohibiting any members bringing a bicycle to the club! He shared his memories of visiting the Club as a small boy with his brother and grandparents eating in the Main Dining Room.

Simon acknowledged ‘the something special about the sta of the Club – so much more than waiters or stewards, they are the fabric of the Club. Without our sta we would be no di erent to any other restaurant or hotel in the city.’

He paid tribute to all the men and women who, over the last 150 years, have added that special dimension in their service of the Club.

And before he led the toast to the Club he spoke of how fi tting that in our 150th year we opened the Bankside complex. “What a fi tting legacy it is to the courage, innovation and foresight of our forebears and the present leadership of the Club that we simply need to glance around to see the new beginnings of the Northern Club in its 151st year.”

Trustee Peter Masfen then cut the celebratory cake which was then enjoyed with co ee.

It was a splendid evening. If you couldn’t attend don’t worry we are putting on several degustation dinners for members to bring guests to enjoy this special 150th celebratory menu. See in the Diary for these dates and enjoy a special occasion.

I’d like to end with the dedication in ‘Behind the Ivy Curtain’ which we used as a toast to our founders - “whose vision has enabled generations of members to enjoy the fellowship of friends and guests in our magnifi cent Club building.”

Happy 150th Birthday to our Club.

Ehara taki Toa I te toa takitahi, Engari he toa takimano takitakiSuccess is not the work of one but the work of many.

Warmly,

Victoria Carter ONZMPresident
