Deconstruction of the opening sequence
THE DEVIL INSIDE
THE DEVIL INSIDE• Date : 2012
• Genre : Horror
• Director : William Brent Bell
DECONSTRUCTION• The film begins with the Insurge Pictures production splash. The
screen then turns black and “Insurge Pictures presents” appears in white writing. It then reads “a PROTOTYPE production” which disappears and the title of the film “The Devil Inside” fades on to the screen in larger white text.
DECONSTRUCTION• The music begins and more text appears on the screen reading
“The Vatican does not authorize the recording of Roman Catholic exorcisms” “The Vatican did not endorse this film” “nor aid it’s completion”. The next piece of text to appear on the screen is a date – “OCTOBER 30 1989”
DECONSTRUCTION• We can now hear the audio from a 911 call “South Hartford 911
what is your emergency” and subtitles of the call also appear on the screen along with the sound. Both the sound and the text appear to be crackly and the audio is unclear for a realistic effect and possibly to make it more scary for the viewer.
DECONSTRUCTION• Once the 911 call is complete we hear the sound of the female
caller hanging up and this tone gets louder. There are white flashes on the black screen.
DECONSTRUCTION• Text on the screen reads “Crime Scene Walkthrough Property of
South Hartford P.D” “Do Not Duplicate”. Police footage then begins - a handheld camera is being used and the video is wobbly and unclear.
DECONSTRUCTION• Diegetic sound of police car sirens are heard and the scene of the
crime is shown on the screen. A man is leading the camera through a house and giving detailed descriptions of the surroundings.
DECONSTRUCTION• We then see a close up of blood splattered on floor before a close
up of a human body with blood all over him. The camera then flashes and switches to a mid shot to reveal more of the body.
