Bromová – Kosek: The development of Czech orthography as seen in broadside ballads1
The development of Czech orthography, as seen in
broadside ballads published by the Olomouc, Brno and
Litomyšl printing houses in the 17th and 18th centuries

Bromová – Kosek: The development of Czech orthography as seen in broadside ballads2
Goals
̶ present (a first couple of) our findings in the project Broadside Ballads in the historical Brno funds
‘Kramářské písně v brněnských historických fondech’ (NAKI II, DG18P02OVV021)
̶ present the starting points for the research on broadside ballads orthography
̶ present the 17th and 18th century sources
̶ analyze selected orthographical phenomena
Bromová – Kosek: The development of Czech orthography as seen in broadside ballads3
Starting point – periods in the Czech history
̶ there are four periods (for discussion, see Kosek 2017)
̶ cca.1300: the first Czech-written texts
̶ at the beginning of Modern Czech, Correct Czech is codified
̶ thus, the language before 1775 can be called ‘older / historical’ Czech; clearly pre-correct (in the sense that it
precedes codification)

Broadside ballads in the history of Czech
̶ the periodization should be refined to capture the significance of the broadside ballads
̶ most of our sources is from the Baroque and Revivalist periods, ca. 1620–1848
̶ the origins of broadside ballads are in the Humanistic period (16th century)
̶ the broadside ballads die out in the post-revivalist period (2nd half of the 19th century)
Early Modern Czech Modern Czech

About the sources
̶ thematically: both religious and secular texts (though, there are more religious texts, and religious motives are
common also in secular texts)
̶ huge amount of texts (ca 40 000 – Voit 2006: 496)
̶ extraordinarily extensive period (ca from the beginning of the 17th century to the 19th century)
̶ anonymous authors (and also editors and translators)
̶ in most cases, texts are not dated at all, or dated problematically (fake dates, pirate editions, etc.)
̶ text ‘migration’ :
variants, reprinted repeatedly (what is the first edition?)
in between manuscripts and prints
in between ‘types’ of prints (broadside ballads, hymnbooks, written Utraquist hymnbooks)
Bromová – Kosek: The development of Czech orthography as seen in broadside ballads6
The starting points in the research of broadside ballads
̶ so far, no systematic research on the language of broadside ballads
̶ texts with ‘a long tradition’ – re-prints, adaptations from the16th century
̶ religious broadside ballads kept the tradition of ‘educated language’ of the end of the 16th century – thus, they
represent a ‘continuation’ of this language standard to the Revivalist period
̶ however: given their nature in between written and spoken language, they are open to accepting language
changes typical of spoken language
̶ all in all, short texts that do not lend themselves to a comprehensive analysis of all the language levels
(grammar and lexicon)
̶ songs: thematically stereotypical with a simple syntax – no different styles
Bromová – Kosek: The development of Czech orthography as seen in broadside ballads7
Orthographic practice in the 17th and 18th centuries
̶ follows the turbulent development of the Czech orthography of the 16th century
̶ concerning orthography, there are two rather different domains
practice of printers (printing houses), traditionally called Brethren orthography
practice of copyists (scribes)
Given our sources, we are interested in printers orthography:
̶ roots in the 16th century (especially in the second half)
̶ continuous tradition (with slight variations) up to the beginning of the 19th century
̶ from the 17th century, the Brethren prints from the 16th and 17th centuries became a model for ‘correct / standard
orthography’, thus Brethren (or recently also) printers orthography
Bromová – Kosek: The development of Czech orthography as seen in broadside ballads8
Printers orthography
̶ phonological (based on segments) with the correspondence between phoneme ↔ grapheme (Uličný 2013,
Beneš 2013)
both diacritics (, , , , ) and multigraphs (, , , ), ev. their combinations
,
orthography self is not codified, but it is stabilized given the massive production; need to keep the
publishing costs low and competition among printing houses lead to a certain (market-induced)
standardization
yet certain variability is typical: due to language change and lack of codification
Bromová – Kosek: The development of Czech orthography as seen in broadside ballads9
Printers orthography – a phoneme is written either with a diacritics or as a multigraph

Bromová – Kosek: The development of Czech orthography as seen in broadside ballads13
Printers orthography – the influence of punctuation and text organization
Starting from the 16th century, a three-level interpunction is introduced
1. Comma marking a non-final pause
2. Colon marking a (final) pause dividing a complex / compound sentence
From the 17th century, semicolon is introduced .
3. Full stop marking a final pause
Question mark and exclamation mark signal communication functions.
Parenthesis mark … parenthesis .
Divis (equal sign) marks a word-break .
For songs, it is usual to mark strophes (by pilcrow ) and changes in the melody within a strophe by .
Bromová – Kosek: The development of Czech orthography as seen in broadside ballads14
Printers orthography – a dynamic system undergoing changes that appear as language variation on surface
Reasons for changes:
̶ Competing ways to write a phoneme ( pro /š/)
̶ Printing house technical capacity: various font types (and their diacritics options)
̶ Introducing language changes (writing , , distribution of i-graphs, distribution of vs. )
̶ Function: the less prestigious text, the higher the variability
̶ Vague rules (especially for capital letters, quantity and interpunction)
̶ Printing house’s dialect (quantity, perhaps also distribution of )
Bromová – Kosek: The development of Czech orthography as seen in broadside ballads15
Research on typesetting of broadside ballads
̶ only the older texts (especially 17th and the first half of the 18th century)
̶ analysis of language of prints from selected printing houses (especially those dialectally rooted, cf.
Olomouc, Brno and Litomyšl)
̶ based on a complete transliteration of selected prints
̶ analysis of those phenomena that undergo change
Bromová – Kosek: The development of Czech orthography as seen in broadside ballads16
Text transliteration – the basics
̶ there are no unified rules for text transliteration (editions of Early Modern texts use ad hoc rules, cf.
BenGram and RosaThes)
̶ the rules used otherwise (to make historical texts accessible, cf. diplomatic texts – Sviták 2017 and/or
transliteration rules for cataloging, cf. Knihopis database) – by non-linguists are not suitable as they
don’t primarily care about orthography
̶ find balance between typography (paleography) and linguistics (typographic variants of letters,
abbreviations, interpunction and text organization, pilcrows, melody change markers)
Bromová – Kosek: The development of Czech orthography as seen in broadside ballads17
Transliteration of broadside ballads – the rules
̶ transliteration based on symbol-to-symbol conversion: minimize loss of graphic symbols from the original
text
̶ everything from the original text is kept, including all the phonemic graphs, interpunction and numeric
̶ typographic symbols are kept as long as they mark text structure
1. melody change marker in a (tripartite) ,
2. strophe markers, cf. pilcrow or (occasionally) ornaments, as hands , or stars
̶ all the abbreviations are kept, cf. , ,

Analyzing the typeset – the starting point
Texts were typeset from older, often discarded Schwabacher fonts, very often in a hurry and without proofreading.
(Voit 2006: 496)
̶ broadside ballads are unprestigious texts of a low-cost production
̶ typically with older font types – such that would not have been used for prestigious prints
̶ relicts of older orthographic phenomena (?)
̶ high variability
Bromová – Kosek: Bromová – Kosek: The development of Czech orthography as seen in broadside ballads20
Analyzing graphics – the analyzed phenomena
̶ font types and means of text organization
̶ frequency of some allographs, ev. their combination
Bromová – Kosek: Bromová – Kosek: The development of Czech orthography as seen in broadside ballads21
Analyzing graphics – the goals
̶ Can we detect any development trends?
̶ Can we detect any local differences?
̶ Can we detect any differences among printing houses?

Typography – summary
We see what we know from the research literature:
̶ Font script (types) of the songs either Schwabacher or Fraktur, Schwabacher slightly more often
̶ Font script (types) for paratexts or for emphasis either Schwabacher and Fraktur, while Fraktur is
more often as ornamental font script (hence, it is common in Initials)
̶ There is just a single text with a relict of Textualis (Texture) – the oldest print from the 17th
century:
a letter
in Emphasis font types
̶ Old typographic abbreviations appear only in the oldest prints
̶ Strophes are marked by a pilcrow , numbers are common only from the half of the18th
century

Bromová – Kosek: The development of Czech orthography as seen in broadside ballads28
Interpunction and text organization – summary
̶ As for interpunction, comma and full stop are the most common ones
̶ Other interpunction markers are exceptions – colon, semicolon, exclamation and question mark, hardly ever;
parenthesis never
̶ Such a plain interpunction gives evidence of simple syntactic structure of the printed broadside ballads
(semicolon and colon are used as interpunction markers in complex and compound sentences in the
contemporary context)
̶ Comma is usually printed as virgule, it appears as comma only from the half of the 18th century – it coincides
with the practice of the contemporary prints: virgule is used in the end of a line, comma in the middle

Bromová – Kosek: The development of Czech orthography as seen in broadside ballads32
Allographs – summary
̶ Double allographs for /b/ and /h/ are kept only in prints from Litomyšl
̶ The hard allograph constantly used up to the mid 18th
century (with exceptions)
̶ Orthographic ligatures of the type , for palatalizing /´e/ disappear in the beginning of the 18th
century
̶ Diacriticized is rather rare (in the oldest prints even as ), more common way is to use digraph using
two common letters

Writing of /i:/ and /u:/ – summary
̶ long /i:/ is marked as
̶ it is only in the oldest prints that it appears as
̶ older digraph (marking that it was a diphthong originally) does not appear in our prints
̶ long /u:/ is marked as (predominantly)
̶ in the oldest prints, there is a variant digraph that shows that the long /u:/ was originally a diphthong
̶ there is no at all: it began to be used in the 16th
century; marginally, there is also , used, perhaps,

Bromová – Kosek: The development of Czech orthography as seen in broadside ballads38
Writing the combination /ši/ – summary
̶ in the second half of the 17th
century, the i-graphs after š are still in competition – the soft i vs.
hard y
̶ in the second half of the 18th
century, there is only the hard y letter after š
Thus we are in position to answer the research questions we asked at the beginning
̶ Can we detect any development trends?
Yes, there is a tendency to mark the long /i:/ by the graph , there is a tendency to get rid of orthographic
ligatures for palatalizing /´e/ and, finally, the trend is not to use the letters after š.
̶ Can we detect local differences?
Marginally – there is a difference between two allographs for /b/ and /h/ in the prints from Litomyšl.
̶ Can we detect any differences among the printing houses?
Leaving aside the differences in the font types, there are no detectable differences among the researched
phenomena. However, if we were to target other graphic phenomena, the possibility for differences along these
lines is not excluded.
