DWEJ’s  Climate  Change  Commitment

•  Since  DWEJ’s  incep+on  in  1994,  we  have  been  a  leading  voice  in  advoca+ng  for  sustainable  communi+es  .

•  Factors  leading  to  climate  change  have  adversely  impacted  low-‐income  and  minority  communi+es  .

•  In  2011,  DWEJ  convened  key  stakeholders  from  diverse  backgrounds  to  form  the  Detroit  Climate  Ac+on  Collabora+ve  (DCAC).

DCAC  Goals:

1) Reduce  greenhouse  gas  emissions  for  the  sustainability  and  well-‐being  of  the  City  of  Detroit.

2) Increase  the  resilience  of  the  city’s  social,  built,  and  natural  environments.

Why  a  Detroit  Climate  Ac+on  Plan  (CAP)?

•  No CAP for Detroit. !

•  Develop a comprehensive strategy to address GHG emissions related to land use, transportation, building design, energy use, water demand, and waste generation.

•  Identify approaches unique to Detroit to achieve GHG emission reductions.

•  Create a roadmap to reducing community GHG emissions associated with both existing and future actions and activities.

•  Vet strategies through a community engagement process.

Poten+al  Opportuni+es

•  Throughout  the  country  there  have  been  model  climate  acEon  plans  that  have  involved  various  sectors  of  the  community

•  Our  desire  is  to  work  with  leaders  to  engage  various  sectors  in  this  exciEng  endeavor.

•  Some  examples  of  involvement  may  include:  PSA’s,  Strengthening  Recycling  programs,  Encourage  businesses/municipaliEes  to  increase  the  use  of  clean  energy/reduce  emissions,  Support  Community  sustainability  plans  (rain  gardens,  weatherizaEon,  etc.)

Detroit GHG Inventory Key Findings

!  Total 2012 citywide emissions were over 10 million tCO2e

!  Municipal Operation Emissions account for approximately 10% of 2012 Citywide total

!  Largest emissions source: Buildings and Facilities’ energy use

!  Largest carrier of emissions: Electricity

!  Gathered information from over 50 organizations in and around Detroit

!  Inventory stakeholders were receptive and cooperative —but data availability, organizational structures hindered certain data collection efforts
