eIt’s July and time for the annual picnic.

This picnic corresponds with July’sOpen House, featuring “Jupiter Madness.”Early the next morning two moons of Ura-nus will occult each other. This makes forsome great fun and some interesting sci-ence all in one day. I’ve been asked by somenew members about ways to gain an ori-entation to the sky and to how to use tele-scopes for observing. A list of games hasbeen developed that teach constellationsand gives orientation to various types oftelescopes. There is no better time to trysome out than a picnic!

So far this year, we’ve looked atChamberlin and the emphasis that DASputs on outreach activities. We’ve taken alook at the Dark Sky site and its role withobserving and members. We received somevery good DSS input—making us take agood look at planning for that site.

This summer we can take a little time tofocus on ourselves, and our

observing and science pro-grams. We are develop-ing a science programthat is centered at

Chamberlin to start with,that will allow members to

learn tecnhiques that can be put to use inour own backyards.

We are saying farewell to a long time mem-ber, a past board member, committee mem-ber, public night scope operator, lecturer,telescope maker, Vice President, President,and past President. This one person will leaveat least nine holes behind her! I’m talkingabout Carla Swartz of course, and her moveto LA. We can never say goodby to Carla, itwould take too long to tell her how muchwe appreciated all that she did for us. So,we will simply wish her well, and tell her tovisit often!—Wayne Green

Annual DASPicnic, Potluck

Cook up a favorite recipe and share it withother DAS members at the Annual DASPicnic and Potluck. The fun begins at 4:00P.M. and doesn’t end until after the monthlyOpen House.

Bryan will be showing two trays ofslides at the general meeting at 7:30

P.M. on Friday, July 7. One of them willinclude his revised “greatest hits” slides ofcomets, meteors and other astronomical phe-nomena. The other will be totally new au-rora borealis photos from Yellowknife,Canada. To create his wonderful 3-dimen-sional slides Bryan uses two Olympus OM2N’s mounted on a Stereo Bar. He currentlyuses Fugi Provia 400 slide film which ispushed to 800 or 1600 depending uponwhat he is shooting.

Bryan’s presentations are viewed with 3-Dglasses and are accompanied by space musicby John Serrie and other composers.

Bryan’s interest in astronomy coin-cided with the discovery of CometMrkos, which he and his father viewedthe night before astronomers announcedtheir findings to the public. His familylived on an 80-acre farm in Michigan atthe time.

He remembers devouring Sky & Tele-scope and any astronomy book he couldget his hands on. As he developed his as-tronomical skills, he began taking pic-

tures of comets, stars and the aurora bo-realis (the northern lights).

This pursuit has led him to the farnorthern territories of Canada, to south-ern Florida and many places in betweento photograph, in three-dimensional glory,the wonders of the night sky.

He is now devoted to presenting his workto the curious. As founder and president of“Nitescapes 3-D,” he currently exhibits hiswork across Colorado, as well as staying ontop of his “Nitescapes” publishing venture.

DAS General Meetings are held on the firstfloor of Olin Hall, on the DU Campus. Theyare open to all with an interest in astronomyand space science.

When viewing Jupi-ter, observe the four Galilean moons and re-member that the four moons are so bright thatif Jupiter were removed from view, the fourmoons would be visible to the naked eye. In addition to this quartet of planets, the cres-cent moon will pass through the Pleiades starcluster on July 20.

Fran Omar 1914-2005

Dave Tondreau worked with Fran Omarfor several years at Chamberlin Observatoryhosting public nights and wanted to share hispersonal memories with us:

I worked with Fran Omar in the earlyand mid 80s on getting the ChamberlinObservatory on the National Registry ofHistoric Places and Public Night. He wasa dapper old gent then, and that’s the wayI will always remember him.

Fran worked the Public Night programfor a quarter of a century. In fact he wasthe Public Night program for many years.He carried on Dr. Recht’s public outreachprogram. He was among the founding fa-thers of the DAS and one of the last linksto those days.

Fran loved the observatory and he tookgreat pride in it. He looked after the obser-vatory, and yes, Fran did windows andfloors. There wasn’t much he did not knowabout the telescope. I remember we gottogether with him to go over how to main-tain the telescope. He was the only one thatknew!

I did not know about Fran’s life outside

to Fran, his acceptance of their requestwould lead him to his future wife, Marian.

Serving as a nurse in Germany, Marianused a three-day pass to travel to Paris witha fellow nurse. After spending several daystogether, Fran and Marian made a bet asto who would get back to the states first.Fran asked Marian to call his sister whenshe arrived stateside to let her know thathe would be home soon. Marian foundpassage on a hospital ship to England andcontinued on to the States. As promised,Marian called Fran’s sister when she re-turned home only to discover that Fran hadalready arrived. Shortly thereafter, Fran andMarian married.

Fran’s first trip to Colorado was an ex-citing one. On a vacation in Denver tovisit friends, he fell in love with Colorado’scrystal clear skies. Marian also had an af-finity for the state as she was raised inColorado Springs until she was seven. Herfamily then moved to Indiana, but Mariannever forgot the Rockies and always

the observatory, but he had to be in his el-ement on Public Night. I always enjoyedwatching Fran in operation—he was sim-ply a delight. His rapport with the publicand particularly children was magical.There is no other way to explain it. Franwas as much a part of the Public Night ex-perience as the telescope. I am sure thou-sands of visitors felt the same way.

Fran was also a contributor to the Inter-national Geophysical Year or IGY throughProject Moonwatch. Project Moonwatchwas composed of teams of observers withoptically tracked satellites (including Rus-sian) in the mid 50s and early 60s. TheDAS had a very active and nationally rec-ognized program. Fran received recognitionfrom the Smithsonian Astrophysical Ob-servatory and was featured in two DenverPost articles.

Fran’s was a quiet dedication, character-istic of his, the greatest, generation. He wasand will always remain a significant part ofthe observatory’s public outreach legacy.

Fran’s unanticipated passing was a blow.My only solace; knowing Fran’s spirit isalive and well in many of us. Just look at achild as he or she looks through a telescopefor the first time, and if you see the ghostof a dapper old gent present, it’s probablyFran.—Dave Tondreau

The third eldest of nine children, Franwas born and raised in Iowa on the banksof the Mississippi River. In 1940, he gradu-ated with a degree in electrical engineeringfrom the University of Iowa. During WorldWar II, he was an officer in the Army andassisted in the construction of the AlaskanHighway. He continued his service in Eu-rope as a transportation officer in Paris andsaw more of the continent than most gen-erals.

Soon after the war, Fran was asked by adoctor and his friends to serve as their guidethrough the City of Lights. Unbeknownst

wanted to see Colorado again. She andFran made the decision to move to Den-ver, and Fran traveled back to Chicago toask his employer, the Bell system, for atransfer. Fran and Marian raised their twodaughters in Denver and their family hasgrown to include four grandchildren andsix great-grand children.

Marian remembers Fran grinding hismirror in their basement. She thought hemust have walked miles around the bar-rel, but he always enjoyed the process. Inorder to learn more about Fran’s love forastronomy, Marian took Dr. Recht’s “As-tronomy for the Jones’” course and en-joyed it very much. Cody, one of theirgreat-grandsons just got his first telescopeand Marian is happy that the family’s loveof astronomy is continuing with futuregenerations.

Fran was well known for keeping theneighborhood children apprised of whatwas happening in the night sky. He wouldconstantly wheel his large telescope out intothe driveway to let them explore the starsand planets. During his memorial service,a ten year-old neighborhood girl spoke ofFran, and how much she appreciated hiswillingness to share his love of astronomywith her.

Jack Eastman has very fond memories ofFran and remembers his respect forChamberlin and the great care he took tokeep and protect the observatory. DanWray believes that the mirror grindingmachine in the old coal bin was built byFran in the 1950’s and then donated to theDAS. Fran’s legacy of teaching and his com-mitment to donate his time and effort soothers might develop their own interest inastronomy serves as an inspiration to all ofus.—Carla Swartz

For those of us who were around (I wasin the third grade) well remember the

IGY or International Geophysical Year. Itwas an unprecedented world wide collabo-rative scientific effort with many numer-ous accomplishments. Perhaps its mostlasting legacy is Antarctica, the only con-tinent where military weapons are bannedby international treaty.

1957 was the year of Sputnik, an eventburned into our collective minds as muchas the Kennedy assassination. TheSmithsonian Astrophysical Observatorywas assigned the responsibility of leadingan optical tracking program for the satel-lites launched as part of IGY. SAO Direc-tor, Fred Whipple, and astronomer J. AllenHynek developed a concept which woulduse two separate but coordinated groups—one to acquire or “find” the satellite, andanother to perform precision tracking.Tracking would be accomplished by aworldwide network of twelve large aper-ture Baker-Nunn cameras operated by pro-fessionals. Acquisition would be the re-sponsibility of the group to be known asProject Moonwatch. A “Moonwatch” di-vision was established at SAO, and as-tronomer Armand Spitz was named as itsDirector. At the time, little was knownabout the upper atmosphere other thanwhat had been learned from brief probingsusing sounding rockets, so the overall SAOoptical tracking program would be crucialto the effort to predict the satellite orbits,and to obtaining a better understandingof the physics of the atmosphere.

Both the scientific community and thepublic were charged with the excitementof space exploration—a new and excitingendeavor that was also open to interested

amateurs through Project Moonwatch—and the DAS was a part of it.

The enthusiasm of amateur star-gazersover the opportunity to have a part in animportant scientific venture impressed thegovernment. Here was a simple way of wid-ening public interest in the IGY both athome and abroad. Doors were open toamateur participation. In early 1956 theMoonwatch teams were authorized. FredWhipple agreed to draft instructions forMoonwatch teams.

Methods of tracking satellites had to beinvented along with methods for launch-ing them. There are two basic ways to tracksatellites: active and passive. Active track-ing uses a radio transmitter on the space-craft. This was the purpose of the famousSputnik beep. Ground receivers can trian-gulate on the radio signal to get directionand range. The problem with radio track-ing, especially with early satellites, is thateventually the batteries powering the radiowould fail. Also, radio tracking doesn’t workfor boosters or other objects that aren’tequipped with radios. Moonwatch observ-ers used small telescopes to spot satellites.Observers measured the position of the sat-ellite and its time of passage. Such obser-vations were not very precise, but the sta-

tions were inexpensive to set up and oper-ate. Many observations from many differ-ent stations could make up for the lack ofprecision. During the months leading upto the expected launch of the U.S. Van-guard satellite, Moonwatch teams refinedtheir observing techniques, practicing onhigh altitude aircraft that were flown forthis purpose. After the surprise launch ofSputnik by the Soviet Union in October1957, the Moonwatch teams were readyand were called into action. An ElectronicGeophysical Year (eGY) is planned for2007-2008 as a 50-year sequel to the highlysuccessful International Geophysical Year.The central objective is to bring the man-agement of geoscientific information

Several discussions have taken place regarding proposed new work at the

E.G.Kline Dark Site. There are some lim-its to our building location. There is abuilding set back from the road of 100feet. If we build inside farther than 150feet, the DAS can avoid having to providea 20-foot wide gravel road to the build-ings. Here are some more of the ideas inthe pot at this time.

1. Install either a 12x16 ft. TuffShed ora 20-foot long shipping container at thesouth end of the site just below the mainentrance gate. Either one will require somework for the footings. TuffShed will pro-vide drawings for the County BuildingDepartment and will install the structureon footings the DAS provides. The costof the structure on our footings with flooris about $3,900, with an additional $2.00per mile over 30 miles distance from thepurchasing store and $5.00 per mile-trav-eled off-highway. To build the shed our-

selves, the basic cost is about $2,100 plusthe delivery charge. The cost for the ship-ping container will be about $2,000.00.The options will be discussed at the nextDSS Committee meeting on June 16th.

2. Provide electrical power at the southend. This will require a building, as IREA(the service provider) mandates a structurefor the service. Output size and other re-quirements will have to be formulated. Thecost for this is about $3,000.

3. Provide more pads for separate scopes.The concrete pad idea has run into someobjections, so Joe Gafford and WayneGreen have suggested alternate solutions tobe discussed at the next meeting of the DSSCommittee.

A main structure will be built to housethe DAS’ 17.5" Dobsonian that is currentlyin my garage. The DAS also has two othertelescopes, their disposition to be decidedon soon. I will keep the Club posted onhappenings at the Dark Site.

The chal-lenge in 1957-58 was to acquire and makeavailable to the world community the ob-servational data required to build a com-prehensive understanding of the Earth andits processes. That challenge remains andis yet more pressing because of the grow-ing demands we place on our natural re-sources and environment.

I made my first pilgrimage to the River-side Telescope Makers Conference(RTMC) this year, May 26-29. The RTMCis well known for the last 30 years or so asa rendezvous for professional and amateuropticians and telescope makers. It was heldagain this year at the YMCA Camp Oakesin the mountains near Big Bear Lake, westof San Bernardino, CA. With the passageof a cold front, weather conditions werechallenging for observing— 55 mph guststhe first night, sub-freezing temperaturesthe next two. Despite that there was quitean interesting program of talks, and manyastronomical vendors displayed. Althoughthe hobby of Amateur Telescope Makinghas declined substantially in the last coupleof decades, (commercial manufacturersnow dominate) RTM still judges and is-sues its traditional Merit Awards for ama-teur built instruments of exceptional de-

When it comes toour club, one of the most visible and fre-quently used benefits of League membershiphas been the Observing Awards; we prob-ably have the most recipients of any club in

the MARS region and hardly a meeting goesby that Jack Eastman doesn’t present one—especially to our past treasurer, Sandy Shaw .

These awards are only available to Astro-nomical League members. In order to learnabout these, and other Astronomical Leaguebenefits, programs, and conventions, youshould become familiar with the League’s website at www.astroleague.org.

Most, if not all of your questions can befound on the League’s web site and you are,of course, most welcome to contact me per-sonally. One of the Astronomical League’spremier events is its annual convention.

This year the convention will be August 4and 5 at the University of Texas at Arling-ton—in Dallas, TX. The web site for the con-vention is alconexpo.com. The conventionchairperson’s address is Dr. Linda Fay McCallaat [email protected] and the co-chairman

If you are consider-ing going then you should check out the websites as soon as possible as some early regis-tration deadlines are rapidly approaching.These conventions are always interesting andfun filled get-togethers of amateur astrono-mers. One thing you can be sure of at a meet-ing in Texas—really good Barbeque!

It has also been announced that the 2007ALCon will be in Portland, Oregon. Thereare many benefits available to League clubsand individuals and, as a member already, youshould do yourself a favor and find out aboutthem. Almost anything you need to know isavailable through the League’s web site.Check it out!

About the Denver Astronomical SocietyMembership in The Denver Astronomical Society is open to any-

one wishing to join. The DAS provides trained volunteers who hosteducational and public outreach events at the University ofDenver’s Historic Chamberlin Observatory, which the DAS helpedplace on the National Register of Historic Places. First light atChamberlin in 1894 was a public night of viewing, a tradition theDAS has helped maintain since its founding in 1952.

The DAS is a long-time member in good standing of the Astro-nomical League and participates in NASA’s Project Astro program.

The DAS’ credo is to provide its members a forum for increasingand sharing their knowledge of astronomy, to promote astronomicaleducation to the public, and to preserve Historic Chamberlin Ob-servatory and its telescope in cooperation with the University ofDenver.

The DAS is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt corpo-ration and has established three tax-deduct-ible funds: the Van Nattan-Hansen Scholar-ship Fund, the Public Outreach Fund, andthe Edmund G. Kline Dark Site Fund. To con-tribute, please see the bottom of the member-ship form for details.
