settlement in the Carolinas.

He received sporadic (rarely occurring) education.

7th President of The United States. (1829-1837)

Died in June 1845.

Party History

Founded by Thomas Jefferson. Founded as a caucus to fight for the Bill of

Rights and against the elitist (someone who believes in rule by an elite group) Federalist Party.

In 1798, the “party of the common man” was officially named the Democratic-Republican Party.

In 1800 Jefferson was elected as the first Democratic President of the United States.

The election of John Quincy Adams (6th) in 1824 led to the split of the Democratic-Republican Party.

The split les to the emergence of Andrew Jackson (7th) as a national leader.

He re-organized the party and held its first National Convention in 1832.

In 1844, the National Convention simplified the Party’s name to the Democratic Party.

The Donkey Andrew Jackson’s opponents labeled him a “jackass” for his populist views and his slogan, “Let the people rule.”

Jackson picked up on their name calling and turned it to his own advantage by using the donkey on his campaign posters.

The first time the donkey was used in a political cartoon to represent the democratic party was in 1837.

They believe in an open, honest and accountable government and in securing our nation while protecting civil rights and liberties.

Republicans believe in the power of an individual to succeed through hard work and self-discipline.

Government must be limited so that it never becomes powerful enough to infringe on the rights of individuals.

They support low taxes because individuals know best how to make their own economic and charitable choices.
