Can you spell C-L-A-I-R-V-O-Y-A-N-T?
When I first heard that the spelling bee was on I wanted to compete. I was never too prepared for the grade level, but past years’ experience came in handy. Tension started brewing when it was a fight for going to regionals. I connected the dots in my head while sitting in the chair. Regionals- state - winner! I wanted to be that, to touch that trophy and to be the best speller in the whole of New South Wales. Little did I know that I would eventually achieve what I sought.
My heart started beating faster in school finals. I was sure everyone wanted to have at least one of those medals, especially the winner’s one. At the end, when there were only two of us left, including me. I was happy that I had a chance of fulfilling my wish. With each round, the desire for the winner’s medal grew more and more. I really wanted it now. I sat there, in the intense competition, waiting for myself to get the glory but it wasn’t as easy as I thought. We went all the way to unknown words which I have a high aversion of. Luckily I knew all of them, except my winning word, “facetious.”
Me and Emma qualified and appeared in the regional finals at Lindfield East Public School. The competition started. I was pretty tense as the participants around me were getting knocked out. At the end, there were a few lucky people who survived, and I prayed enough to be part of this group. And then again, the unknown words came about to haunt us again. After hearing the announcer saying this, I sat up straight in my chair, because I had been slumping all through the known words. Soon it was a dual between me and the runners up. Seriously, it was no longer about words, but nerves and it was about who held it better. Phew, I was so relieved that I made it through. The expectations were very high when I qualified for the state finals. Luckily, I had close to two months of time on my side to prepare. Having come this far, I knew that I have prepared hard, worked hard not just to achieve that goal I set for myself, but also to uphold my family’s belief in me and my school’s belief in me. I knew it was going to be tough, but then, my mum was of great help. She took me through the paces and ensured that I didn’t lose my focus. I don’t want to say a word of what happened at the state finals. I was completely in my shell. I can say that I came back to my senses when the announcer crowned me as a winner. Woo Hoo! While it is my name that is going on the medals and certificates, it is without any doubts that a lot of hard work was put in by my parents. A lot of guidance received from my teachers and without doubt all the support I received from my classmates and friends. A big thank you to all of you! Words by Vashnavi 4GH. A quick guide on some of the native Australian plants that we have in our school: - Banksia - Kangaroo Paw - Eucalyptus - Spider flower (Grevillea) - Paperbark - Myrtle - Lilli Pilli If you are interested in planting or getting your hands dirty come and join the Gardening club on Wednesday at lunch time. Mrs Culmer would love to see you there.
On this year’s Tree Planting Day, all previous semester’s eco ambassadors were invited to plant a tree at Lower McHatton and the Bay road school gate and this reporter tagged along to see what those little eco warriors were up to.
In between helping students with planting and watering, Mrs Bell and Ms Antsty managed to shed some light on what National Tree Day is all about: What is tree planting day all about? It is about awareness of sustainability and protecting the environment. Why did tree planting day start? At the Dem we have a close relationship with the North Sydney Council. They gave us the trees to plant. What can the school do to help the environment? Many things, mainly to reuse and recycle. What types of plants are the ecos planting this year? Australian natives. What do you have in mind for this semester’s ecos? We would like to improve recycling in the school. Words and pictures by Tom 5DL

Stage 3 Excursion to Canberra
The Lake Burley-Griffin ride Excitement brewed on the bus for our second event, the Lake Burley- Griffin bike ride. Outside Questacon our tour guide, Nathan, talked us through the rules and instructions for the bike ride. Teachers and students took off with Mrs.Lynam at the front and Mrs.Durrant at the back. Students who weren’t riding went on a walk with Mrs. Smith to the international flag display and the Reconciliation area.
Travelling On the 19th of August all of Stage 3 gathered together at 5:30 am. When everyone arrived teachers marked the roll to make sure everyone had arrived. When the roll had been completed we boarded the buses. Every day we travelled on the same bus to get to all the places we needed to visit. We had to be very organised, look after our belongings and keep the bus clean. The teachers were very nice because they helped all the kids who felt bus sick and gave them mint lollies. To help us look after each other we were given a partner and lined up for a count off this made sure no one got lost. The Exhibition Centre taught us about the process of choosing the national capital and how it was designed. We got to place pieces onto a colourful map of NSW (New South Wales) .The pieces had names of areas that were considered to become the Capital of Australia. We learnt that Walter Burley-Griffin and his wife Marion won a competition to design the city of Canberra
The War Memorial During our visit to the War Memorial we heard stories of servicemen and women who had served our country in various wars. NSDS students were privileged to be invited to stay for the Last Post Ceremony and Oliver and Sophie laid a wreath beside the Pool of Reflection on behalf of our school to honour those who had lost their lives in war. It was very special to visit during the Centenary of the ANZAC campaign.
Our Accommodation Every evening, all Stage 3 went back to their cabins at the Carotel to shower and rest. Each cabin was taken care of by a teacher who walked around the cabins and checked to see if everyone was doing well. Mrs. Wearne created a challenge which included tidying up your room so that teachers could decide which room was the tidiest of them all! For meals we walked to the dining room to have breakfast and dinner, the dining room was warm and noisy.

Eating out Whilst in Canberra we were very lucky with the wonderful weather and were able to enjoy experiencing eating out in wonderful places such as the park near Questacon, Parliament House, Senate Rose Garden and outside the National Art Gallery. Electoral Education Office At the Electoral Education Office we learnt the history of democracy in Australia and how we came to have the system of government that we have. We took part in a mock election and learnt about preferential voting. It was great fun to get to vote like adults do. Parliament House Six lucky students got the amazing opportunity to perform in a role-play to learn how to pass a bill through the House of Representatives. We then had a tour of the building and saw both house of Parliament.Year 6 students were very lucky to see our politicians at work during question time. Questacon You will not leave Questacon without a smile on your face! Everyone can learn about natural disasters, technology and science. At Questacon there were many colourful and scientific exhibitions, such as the Free Fall! The Free Fall is a 2metre vertical drop! It is a fun slide that tests gravity. Before going on the Free Fall we had to put on a protective suit to make sure that we didn’t get slide burn. There is also a room that has the natural disasters that happen around the world such as the earthquake, tornados, hurricane and lightning simulator. In every room there were educational facts about different topics that relate to science and technology. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit their National Capital as part of their civics and citizenship education. To assist in meeting the costs of the excursion the Australian Government contributed funding under the Parliament and Civics Rebate (PACER) programme toward the travel expenses incurred for this trip. This contribution allowed us to reduce the cost of the excursion by $20 per student. We would like to thank the Australian Government for their support of this program.
