MONEY MATTERS For June 2017 by Geri Eckert, Treasurer

Hope all Mothers/Grandmothers had a wonderful Mother's Day. Mine was fantas-tic....I enjoyed all afternoon at Sacramento Sunday Jazz at the Riverside Elks and then dinner at a wonderful Italian restaurant with my son and family. What a fantastic

day I had!!!..... The music by the CREOLE JAZZ KINGS (comprised of 6 Kings and 1 Queen) was terrific and the dancers were "hoppin” to the happy beat." Thank you, guys and gal, for the great music. Our financial situation, however, took a negative turn due to a couple big ticket items. We had a small, but enthusiastic, attendance "again" in May, but we hope to do better in future months. We MUST increase our income by filling the room with people and new members. Please do your part and help....*if you want our club to continue*. PRESIDENT’S REPORT - For June 2017 June: croon, spoon, moon, loon, tune, soon. This month is known as the wed-ding month, but a case could be made for, “the lyricist's month”. In any case most of us in the “top” half of the world agree, about the best the weather gods have to offer. Club affairs, status stable and steady as she goes. Cozy but not as vigorous as we would like. We are still awaiting the return of our Editor Emeritus/social columnist Bil-

lie. Thankfully, this appears to be in the cards sometime soon. URT of the month: For those of you who were bored silly by my expressed wonderment in a preceding article with reference to interstates in the San Fernando Valley and beyond; here comes further abuse in the form of the answer which I just recently ascertained. Automobile- eccentric Southern California, in the late forties and fifties, began building free-ways before the birth of the interstate system, as did Pennsylvania with their Turnpike. They were identified by name exclusively, which required that article. Then as often happens in language, its' use lingered when those were replaced with numbers. Not every bad event can/should be called a tragedy. It's cause must have certain characteris-tics one of which could be a misunderstanding. A new German immigrant hired an unskilled and poorly educated American whom he instructed to “Paint the porch at the front of the house”. Af-ter handing him a can of enamel and brush, the worker immediately displayed great surprise and proclaimed “What”? The newly minted German-American blamed this on his own faulty vocabu-lary (not accent, and there's the tragedy qualification). So he patiently repeated the instruction very slowly. “Are you sure”? “Yavold I am quite sure”. Slowly the puzzled hiree walked to the front yard. Half an hour later the German homeowner did the same. And there was his quite old and sun-burned classic Porsche, half shiny, newly painted.

Reminder: We are having a Board Meeting June 4th at 5 pm right after our session. Your Prez. Frank Lindskoog

A salesman walks into the bar and asks, "You know where Bubba lives?"

"Sure" says the bartender, and he gives him directions. "But you gotta be careful. Don't honk your horn when you pull up in front of

Bubba's house." "Why not?" asks the salesman.

"Well, you see, about three months ago Bub-ba's wife ran off with a banjo player named Jun-

ior. And every time Bubba hears somebody honk, he's afraid the banjo player is bringing her

back."!

SEEN AT THE SCENE (for June 2017) By Billie Ricker, Editor Emeritus - The Delta Rag

Billie continues on the slow mend. We all miss you very much!

Several years ago Billie coined a title for her article on actions taken or discussed by the SJDJS Board of Directors. She called it Splinters From the Board. Any Member of the SJDJS is welcome to attend our Board of Director’s Meetings and be heard. Our Board Meetings are now held on an as-needed basis. They follow the regular Sunday SJDJS Sessions. President Lindskoog has called for a Board of Directors Meeting at 5 PM, following our June 4 SJDJS Session. At that meeting we will discuss some of our budget concerns and some cost-savings ideas. Please accept this invitation to attend the meeting. If you have something for us to consider, we hope you will plan on attending. If you can’t attend, please send us a note, or use our “Contact Us” e mail address: [email protected]

NEWS FROM THE VEEP (Vice President/Music Director) Carl Kaiser — For June, 2017 If you missed the May 2017 session, you missed a super guest band. The Creole Jazz Kings, led by tubaist Keith Baltz, mixed excellent musicianship, entertain-ment, and a generous portion of FUN into a memorable SJDJS session! Of course, it is always great to see and hear our not-so-old friends such as Bob Sakoi on trumpet, Tom Schmidt on clarinet, Glenn Richardson on trombone, Kurt Abell on banjo & gui-

tar, Joe Runnels on drums and vocalist extraordinaire Becky Sharp. Many thanks to this fantastic group of guys (and gal!) for their wonderful performance. Oh, and that motley crew of musicians, AKA the jammers, were also accused of having fun by Marlene Tygett! If the band and audience are having fun and the music is enjoyable, that gen-erally sums up to be a successful day! And certainly these fine musicians did their part. Thanks to Geri Eckert, Greg Ayala, Keith Baltz (who had a very busy day on tuba), Charlie Gehlbach, Carl Kaiser, Mark Kramer, Stephen Lee, Frank Lindskoog, Dick Lockwood, Larry Tyrell, and Chris Williams for continuing the SJDJS tradition of having the best jammers in these parts! (Editor Note: Carl Kaiser modestly left off his own name from among the jammers. That’s not gonna happen, Carl!) Speaking of the tuba, did you ever notice that the tuba player rarely stops playing during a tune? A chord with three notes (triad) is made up of the first, third and fifth notes of a scale. When played together, the first note of the scale is the lowest note and is generally played by the tuba (or any bass instrument). Why did I say generally? Because music is like the English language - there are always exceptions! Books are written about music theory and music majors in college take at least two years of study to get a start in music theory! Bottom line, and I believe we were talking tu-ba(!), listen to a band when the tuba stops playing. You get a very different sounding band for sure! Our guest band for June will be the renowned Natural Gas Jazz Band. If you are new to trad jazz, you have missed at least 45 years of music provided by this great band. Highly respected and loved by folks everywhere, they always love to play in Stockton. That is high praise for our wonderful club. You should be there!

Here is a Did you Know contributed by Kerry: The slang term “chops,” used to refer to ability (as in “He’s got the chops to get the job done”) originated in 1930s jazz culture as a reference to how good the brass musicians contorted their faces while playing.

P. P. (PAST PRESIDENT) SEZ - For June 2017 I’m sorry Mrs. Nandersee (wherever you are). I get it now! (?? Keep reading!* )

I traveled to Arkansas in May to attend the high school graduation of my Grand-daughter Breanna Batson. Said graduation was not always thought to be in the

cards. So, the least an absentee Grandfather could do was to be in attendance. Needless to say, I am very proud of Breanna! Three days before the graduation ceremony, I attended the Spring Concert of the Lavaca, combined classes of Choir and Band. Like many school music programs, this one included groups from the Elementary, Junior High and High School music classes. Among the Seventh Grade band members was a trombone player named Cade Carlson, my grandson. Carrying on the Lockwood tradition in music. Another proud Grandfather moment to say the least. If you think I left after the concert without introducing myself to the band directors…..you would be wrong! And so, I met Mr. Logan Dooley and Mr. Scott Gann. I complimented them on the program. I told them how much it reminded me of my own early music days (So long - long ago and so far - far away.) They invited me to come to the band practice for the last three days of the school year. It took me only a nanosecond to make that decision! And so I found myself once again seated in a 7th grade band room, among some 40 young musicians. Most of whom (including Cade) were intent on learning their music craft. However, there were the few kids (Mostly the drum line) who were not paying the strictest of attention. And so, on the second day, the rehearsal of a new tune was stopped by the teachers. Instruments were put away and a music essay written test became the order of the day. Grumble...grumble. The third day promised to hold a bit more fun. It turned out that Mr. Gann is a very fine clarinet player and Mr. Dooley is a very fine stand up bass man. I was afforded the loan of the school’s Bundy Tenor Sax and the three of us did a 5 minute demonstration of jazz tunes. * So….Who is Mrs. Nandersee? This fine woman was the band director at David D. Bohannon Junior High school back in 1953 & 1954. She was a very nice, well liked lady as I re-call. An Older Lady too! Probably about 40! :>) She too, had a class of about 40 students. Most, like me, had no formal lessons on our instrument. She was the one who taught us what key to push, when it was wrong, what the little black marks meant on the music sheets, and what playing together should sound like. I can still hear her baton tapping on the music stand to teach us about tempos. I recall our preparation for the Spring Concerts. She also kept order in the band room. I recall at least once (OK maybe a lot of times) being told that we should all be quiet and pay attention. I now understand what a hard task she had. It may be akin to herding cats! Here now, my belated note to say I am sorry Mrs. Nandersee that I sometimes didn’t pay closer attention to you. You are such a large part of where I am in music today. THANK YOU!
