DELIUS TRUST RECORDINGS
With one or two possible exceptions, all the post-war recordings of Sir ThomasBeecham and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra were made under the auspices ofthe Delius Trust; also Songs of Farewell, etc. (HMV ALP 2097), Requiem, etc.(HMV ASD 2397), Songs of Sunset, etc. (HMV ASD 2437).
INFORMATION
Where practical and desirable an attempt has been made to list all other itemscontained on any record whether compositions by Delius or not. In a few instancesthis practice has not been adhered to if the record merely contains a very shortpiece or, in exceptional cases, where the information could not be traced. It ishoped that this and other additional information contained within these pages willgreatly increase the scope and usefulness of the Index and encourage appreciationamong readers outside the limited sphere of the enthusiast. To save space andunnecessary duplication, alternative record numbers (i. e. overseas numbers,. etc.)are listed in full only in Parts 1 & 2, e. g. Florida Suite, shown in Part I, as follows:-
HMV ALP 1697HMV ASD 329(S)HMV HQS 1126(S)CAPITOL G7193CAPITOL SG 7193(S)
whereas, elsewhere, it will be shown simply as HMV ALP 1697.
The following symbols have been adopted:-

Stereo number (LPs)Automatic couplings (78s)Pre-electrical recordings (78s)

NOTES
1. The (Old) Royal Philharmonic Orchestra was the Orchestra of the RoyalPhilharmonic Society and existed up to about 1930. There is no connectionbetween this and the present day orchestra, which bears the same title. The present day orchestra was founded by Sir Thomas Beecham in 1946 andmade its first public appearance in that year at the Davis Theatre, Croydon.
2. The Geoffrey Toye recording of "In a Summer Garden" was one of Delius'sown special favourites and was, in fact, the last music he ever heardplayed on his EMG gramophone a short time before he died . It was firstissued in 1929.
3. "Two Aquarelles" is actually an arrangement for string orchestra by EricFenby of the two unaccompanied part songs "To be sung of a summer nighton the water" .

COLUMBIAL 1463 *
by Stuart Upton
The following is a list of gramophone records (78s), all of which have strongpersonal connections with the life of Frederick Delius. It is fairly safe to assume thatsome of these would most certainly have been in his own personal collection:-
SIR GRANVILLE BANTOCK (1868 - 1946), who conducted one of thevery first performances of "Brigg Fair", was friend and champion ofboth Delius and Elgar. In a discussion with Donald Brook about 1945he is quoted as saying:-
"British music has made little progress since Elgar and, althoughplenty of. music is being composed today, none of it will compare withthe works of Delius" - Composers I Gallery by Donald Brook(published by Rockcliff). The following record was made about 1924:-
The Pierrot of the Minute - Comedy Overture(Granville Bantock)
The New Queen's Hall Orchestraconducted by Sir Henry J. Wood
ALBERT COATES (1882 - 1953) This famous British conductorwould not normally bring to mind the music of Delius today, but thelink is stronger than one might expect. "North Country Sketches" isdedicated to Albert Coates and he is noted for having conducted thefirst performance of "Song of the High Hills" in 1920, although thiswork was actually composed some years before. One of Delius'sfavourite works was "Don Juan" by Richard Strauss, and AlbertCoates's recording. made about 1926, may well have been the one heowned.

In the Spring of 1933 SIR EDWARD ELGAR (1857 - 1934), then in his middleseventies, visited Delius and his wife at Grez-sur-Loing. With him he took thefollowing records:-

HENRY BALFOUR GARDINER (1877 - 1950) was another great friend and aman of means. It is to him that "On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring" and"Summer Night on the River" are dedicated. He helped Delius when in financialdifficulties and actually sponsored a number of performances of his works. He washimself an extremely gifted composer and is remembered today mainly for his"Shepherd Fennel's Dance". The original 1920s recording is listed below:-
Brigg Fair (Lincolnshire FolkSong) (arr. P. Grainger)(Coventry Carol - trad.)Oriana Madrigal Societycond. Charles Kennedy Scott

The influence of EDWARD GRIEG (1843 - 1907) on Delius's life and work is wellknown. He was, at the time he appeared, possibly the only person with sufficientinfluence and reputation to have any effect on the composer's disapproving father, whohad decided that his son should enter the family wool business in Bradford. Althoughthe old man was very fond of music himself, he could not accept the music professionas being a suitable career for a gentleman. Neither Grieg nor anyone else could havechanged his views on this, but Grieg did use his influence in every way he could, and itwas largely on his account that the young composer was finally allowed to go to Leipzigfor a period of serious study.
The following records were made by Grieg himself in 1903:-

BEATRICE HARRISON, the famous 'cellist, to whom "Caprice and Elegy" isdedicated, and her sisters, May (violinist) and Margaret (pianist) were also closelyassociated with Delius in his later years.

In B247 0 she can be heard playing her unaccompanied 'cello inthe garden against a background of bird song. Also listed for their historical interestare the wonderful records of Elgar's'Cello Concerto, recorded in 1928 withthe composer himself conducting.

EVLYN HOWARD-JONES (1877 - 1951) This famous pianist was yet anotherof Delius's friends. The two men were compatible company until the conversationstrayed to the subject of religion. Howard-Jones did not take kindly to some ofDelius's expressed views in this connection.

Delius was very fond of a well-known American close-harmony male vocalgroup popular in the late 1920s. They were known as THE REVELLERS, and thefollowing are typical examples of their work:-

SIR LANDON RONALD (1873 - 1938) Sir Landon Ronald conducted the firstEnglish performance of "Brigg Fair" at Birmingham. (The second performance, incidentally, was in Liverpool under Sir Granville Bantock).
The following records were made in 1925 and may well have been known toDelius:-
Albert Sammons

HMVD 1081/2
MAX VON SCHILLINGS (1868 - 1933)"Sea Drift" is considered by many to be oneof Delius's very finest creations, and the factthat it was dedicated to this great Germanconductor would seem good reason to includehim. The magnificent records listed below were made in the late 1920s:-
COLUMBIAL 1851/5
COLUMBIA Sonatina in D, Op. 137,4794/6 No. 1 (Schubert)(10") Albert Sammons - violin
William Murdoch - piano
Lyric Suite - Op. 47 (Grieg)Royal Albert Hall Orchestra, conducted by Sir Landon Ronald
It was to ALBERT SAMMONS thatDelius dedicated his violin concerto, which he composed in 1916. Sammons wasstill serving in the Army at the time of itsfirst performance and, according to SirAdrian Boult, who conducted, he ran intodifficulties due to an unexpected dutywhich was allocated to him shortly beforethe concert. ' All ended happily, however,as at the last moment the CommandingOfficer granted him special leave ofabsence. The following records, made inthe late twenties, are typical of his styleof playing:-

CHARLES KENNEDY SCOTT was a noted interpreter of Delius's choral worksin the early days and with the Oriana Madrigal Society, which he founded, wasresponsible for the first performance of the two choral songs "To be Sung of aSummer Night on the Water". (See under PERCY GRAINGER - HMV E473 andBALFOUR GARDINER - HMV D1304)
N. G.S. Serenade for Strings (1922) PETER WARLOCK (1894 - 1930)75 (Composed for Frederick Delius on his 60th birthday)
The NGS Chamber Orchestraconducted by John Barbirolli
There are several other recordings of this work, but this is the original recordfirst issued in 1927. It was the only one available in Delius's lifetime and was madein the presence of Peter Warlock.
Here is an extract from the National Gramophonic Society Notes, which appearedin "The Gramophone" in February 1927, page 391:- "The composer, Mr. PeterWarlock, was good enough to attend a rehearsal of his Serenade for Strings and toapprove the tempo, about which there has always been some doubt. This imprimaturgives a valuable authority to our record ".
The National Gramophonic Society was an organisation which existed in the1920s to promote recordings (and occasionally performances of the works they recorded)of new and little known works, mainly by British composers. See also "Summer Night onthe River" (NGS. 72).
The year 1917 saw the first performance of "Eventyr" by SIR HENRY J. WOODand the Queen's Hall Orchestra, to whom it was dedicated. The somewhat romanticstory is that Delius brought the original manuscript over to England wrapped aroundhis waist, as he was afraid of having it confiscated by Customs' Officials. Rememberingthat this was during the 1914-18 war, Delius believed that his score might be mistakenfor enemy information. He and his wife stayed at thehome of Sir Henry Wood during this visit.
